I was home 2yrs ago and my son and I traveled with the TC my son did not have a passport and the embassy in ATL were out of booklets for a long time. The TC is a single entry certificate which is not a guarantee for entree sef. So without your PP they could have easily denied you entry citizen or not. And just know that the only reason why they let you go was because someone did their job by recording your entry through the TC. If he wanted to be wicked, he would not do so, thereby since you were presenting yourself as a US citizen at the point of exit without visa, you were automatically an illegal US citizen in Nigeria. So your status could move from travel to deportation since you deliberately refused to pay for visa. So please be careful next time. Nigeria and US don't have that bilateral immigration for free entry or exit.

Seems you were wrongly advised. You certainly required a visa on your US passport to enter or exit Nigeria as a US citizen.
Or once you entered Nigeria with your TC, you immediately get your Nigerian passport renewed and both passports needs to be presented at the point of exit.

My thing is this - Coming from a lesser developed country in the caribbean you can't take any chances. I think with living in North America for so long some of us who have lived abroad take it for granted on how flexible those societies are and forget the level of bureaucracy and lack of critical thinking in the institutions at home. Personally I would have NEVER traveled without my expired passport or some kind of correspondence from my embassy in the US. When they give you just that piece of paper they leave you up to exploitation. I know someone who went Nigeria for the first time and one of the officers told him to wait in a separate room. He waited for over an hour and then she returns , shuts the door behind her tightly and demands a bribe from him saying that she was very nice to him and she deserved it. Of course he didn't give in and eventually she had to let him go. That's the ting I hate about Nigerian culture - the bribery demanded by persons in uniform.

When you don’t travel with the right and necessary documents, you will expose yourself to all sorts and you either do the needful or bribe them. They were actually nice to let you in and out. Always travel with your expired passport hidden somewhere. In my case, myself, my husband and 3 kids got visa on arrival on our American passport which cost over $1000 so we did not have any issues coming back to the US. I also took my expired Nigerian passport with me and I processed a new one Nigerian passport during my stay which gives me a dual citizenship… less headaches on my next travel home

Generally when you have a travel certificate with an expired passport, you place the certificate inside the expired passport because the certificate was issued to you because of the passport. As you know, both the US passport, the certificate and the Nigerian passport have to be scañned. I think that was where the issue came from.

When you got to Nigeria, you should have asked your husband to send your old passport by courier to you in Nigeria before you travel back. You did not do anything wrong though but that is how our Civil Servants in Nigeria make life miserable for us with foreign passports. Also, in Nigeria, you should have applied for a new Nigerian passport on emergency, although that will depend on how long you’re staying for in Nigeria.

To the honest truth they don't do this things to foreigners. Even with your visa in USA passport they will still ask for bribes and with ur Nigeria visa you only have 1 month to spend in Nigeria.

Let's not confuse ourselves. As a dual citizen, your passports must always be valid. Always renew them whenever they expire.
Now, if you are traveling to Nigeria, present your US passport at the US point of departure and when you land in Nigeria, present your Nigeria passport at the point of entry in Nigeria to enter Nigeria.
When leaving Nigeria back to the US, present your Nigeria passport at the point of departure from Nigeria and when you get to the US, present your US passport at the point of entry into the US.
If you understand this, you will save yourself of being held up when travelling.

One of them took me to a room and gave me a document to sign which stated that I'll have a new passport or at least begin the processing of a new passport before I leave Nigeria.
I showed him a receipt that I have already begun the processing of a new passport. He looked at it, entered some details into a computer, folded it into my expired passport, and handed me back the expired passport. He told me that I must have that receipt on me when leaving Nigeria to avoid any issues.

To leave Nigeria to the US yes you will need a valid visa so it can be stamped that you have departed Nigeria to the US. And for them to do this they needed to see a visa entry upon arrival. Though you might be a US Citizen a Nigerian visa on your US passport would have stipulated your duration (that is entry & leaving Nigeria). It's best to come with a renewed Nigerian passport or apply for a Visa with your Foreign Passport. But glad you didn't miss your flight.

I don't believe she was wrong. The only mistake I can see here is not travelling with her expired Nigerian passport.
The immigration officers just wanted to exploit her.
      She had 3 viable options to enter Nigeria;
      1. A current Nigerian passport
      2. Enter Nigeria with a travel certificate or
      3. Get a visa on her US passport

You must get a visa aproved befor travel to Nigeria. I traveled Nigeria with visa and it was successful all the time. Best get visa to Nigeria when you have advance nationality nation passport.

Thank you, Sister Bunmi. That was a helpful information. I had a slightly similar but not as drastic experience as yours way back 2012. My Passport was not expired, but the immigration officer said the government has changed to a new kind of passport so I should not have travelled with the 'old' passport as he called it. So, I said how am I supposed to know that when the Nigeria Embassy in D.C did not tell me that when they renewed the passport for me.
Anyway, he let me go without incident but wrote a letter 'A' on my passport. I didn't know what that meant until when it was time for my departure. The immigration officer asked for my travel document. I gave him my American Passport. Then he asked for the passport I used to enter; I gave him my Naija Passport. Then he said they should not have allowed you in. Then I said who are the 'they' and why not? Then he said because the passport was the 'old' passport. Then I responded, but it is a valid unexpired Nigerian passport. Then he left me to call someone that looks like a senior officer. Both of them were looking at my Nigerian and the American passports. inside of me I was like with an American passport I don't need a Nigerian Passport to travel to the U.S. from Naija so, you can't stop me.
Long story short, they had some inaudible exchanges between them, handed back my two passports and said I should go without saying anything further.
My take is many of those immigration officers are there just to take advantage of travelers' situation to extort.

My dear you don't sound intelligent at all. Your Nigeria Passport had expired so why didn't you travel with it. You travelled with travel CERTIFICATE??? You were supposed to show them at Nigerian airport both the travel Certificate and Nigeria passport as authentic proof that you are a Nigerian and that it has expired and that was why you went for travel Certificate. Then while in Nigeria you would renew your Nigerian Passport to go back to US. You were lucky that they allowed to board the flight back to US. My dear you were totally at fault. You took for granted that you are from Nigeria and didn't prepare well for your trip. Be very careful. Don't just do this with another country.

Hi Bumni thnx so so much fr shareing ur experiences. I did learn alot tbh.. my naija pasport has expired and i wdnt even try to take the risk cus i had my first name changed whereas my naija passports got my old name.
2ndly getting a Visa on my British pp is another wahala.. with all these saga going on back in naija and coupled with the fact that ur freind who confirmed that its over 7wks yet no visa..
So that sickness right from naija still runs in the veins of even those working in the naija embassys abroad whether US,Germany,uk etc
But we got no choice really. Its better to wait than to face those horrible situations back home really.
Once again thnx so much fr your precious time yh. Really really learnt alot cus am considered travelling lol.
    Bless ya Bummi

I went with my two passports, travel documents and yet I went through almost the same situation. They ask directly for dollars expectially from USA. I was the last person to board. No matter what it is yet it's ridiculous. My passport was renewed but remember there is no wallet. It's horrible either way.
