This is one of the best videos I've seen regarding practice and progress, not just for shredding or even guitar, but in general. Very spot on but without creating a blur of details.

That solo at the beginning was beautiful 😢

I'm not as good as I should be for how long I've been playing. I decided to start taking it more seriously last winter and started taking lessons that focus on theory with improvisation being the eventual goal. I practiced several hours a day as well, trying to manage my practice time into segments covering different aspects, from theory drills, to technique and timing. Then I crashed.
I cancelled the lessons a couple of weeks ago and haven't picked it up except to noodle around a few times. I learned a lot about theory and even mapped out the fretboard better than I ever have. I'm not done with it, but I reached a point where I was just spinning my wheels and didn't even know what I was trying to accomplish anymore. I was pouring all this effort and study into it for months, but was getting nowhere it seemed.
When I come back to it again I'm going to dial back the intensity a notch and find a different teacher and change my tact for now, from theory and improv to just playing songs I want to play that are at an appropriate balance between, challenging and achievable and work on my own riffs and writing a bit also, then give it some time to see where it goes.
Constant technique practice is a part of where I went wrong. I was so gung ho, I should seen that it wasn't going to be sustainable. To become a stand out player isn't something that can be designed and executed like a blueprint. There's psychology, physiology and academic application involved. I think it's impossible to ever be a perfect player, at least for me and I need to stop trying to be and just enjoy playing guitar again.
What you've said here really resonated with me. How to get good at guitar is an extremely complicated topic that's difficult to verbally communicate, but I know I don't have to tell you that.

Hey mate! Indeed, as I said, we're not machines. Enjoying our time is just as crucial and equal to practicing and striving to get better. In time we realize our strengths and weaknesses, and we learn how to shape our practice routine to our own personalities. Hope I've added some value to the way you'll approach the instrument!

I started playing guitar in 1993 and, while my grasp of theory has increased by several orders of magnitude, I still haven't built the skills to shred. Might be a lost cause now since at 45 my fingers are starting to stiffen up. But hey- at least I can use a mMaj7 chord in context now lol

Maybe the real shredding was the friends we made along the way.

I can't shred because I don't care. Fast notes are boring.

They’re good in bursts to give the solo some taste and that’s how I like it. You’re right if it’s just fast all the way through it does get boring.

That’s what people who can’t shred say lol. Playing fast is just another tool. Sure you can play fast and it can be boring but playing fast can make your playing sound amazing

@@lebooselover978 I'm too old and too jaded. I'd rather hear B.B. King speak volumes with one sustained note than hear YJM shred 10,000 notes a minute.

It's takes a special gift to be able to play fast. No amount of practice will make you play like that. You are born with it. You need special muscles in order to do it and that's something my old giutar teacher told me
