In the 70s there was a lot of focus on South America and the hardships people there went through with fascist regimes and the poverty that followed. In Sweden (where ABBA is from, as am I), South America became the posterchild for human suffering and injustice. These days it's the MidEast and Africa. So singing "Chiquitita" can be addressing a little girl in Spanish, but it can also be addressing an entire Spanish speaking nation in duress and hardship, telling them that the sorrow won't last forever and that there will be a better tomorrow.

Both the men worked on the lyrics and music. Made their own produced music. Musical geniuses.
One of their very best songs, which could be said for almost any of their songs 😂 they are just that good. Perfect instrumentation, perfect vocals and great songwriting. Agnetha and Annifrid singing in harmony, creating the legendary "third voice"
The backing vocals of Anni-Frid on this track are what make it for me.
This is my favourite song of theirs as it is the only one which shows you how powerful the girls' voices were.
One thing I've always loved about ABBA is the fact that none of their songs sound alike. They are all unique and have their own vibe. So many popular groups had to fight hard to not produce cookie cutter songs, all cut from some formulaic mold that someone somewhere decided would work. ABBA definitely achieved that independence from the "formula".

I am a late convert to ABBA. In the 70's I was a rocker. Pop was beneath me. But I like you have discovered the beauty of ABBA's work. Many refer to ABBA's harmonies as their third voice. Both women are highly skilled but Agnetha in particular is impressive. She can belt in operatic frequencies and her breath control is amazing. Check out "The Winner Takes It All".
In ABBA your have 4 members; Agnetha (blonde) "A", Bjorn (guitar) "B", Benny (piano) "B", and Ani-Frid (Frida (auburn)) "A". The men would compose the music, Bjorn would write the lyrics, the music would be recorded in studio, the ladies would come into the studio and record the backing track, then the women would return to record the main vocals and lead.
ABBA were two couples; Agnetha / Bjorn, and Ani-Frid / Benny. Both couples divorced in the late seventies /early eighties, but they continued working together until 1982. Then they came back together in 2021 to record again.
ABBA had more than 10 worldwide hits in less than 10 years. Agnetha and Ani-Frid both had solo careers before and after ABBA. The men produced a couple of Broadway plays. Most notably "Mama Mia", which later became the movie starring Meryl Streep.
Should also be mentioned that (quite miraculously, and coming from nowhere) ABBA released another album in late 2021. After 40 years. They ladies definitely sound older, but to many the magic is still there. They went for total 70s retro sound.
Yes, this song is written for charity to UNICEF, all money are going there. It has been a huge success over the years. A worldhit - the Spanish version was for example number 1 in Mexico in 32 weeks! 😮 They where singing in 5 languages 😮 Wonderful you love them - all members are huge talants! 1) ABBA sing their own songs, composed by guitarist Björn and pianist Benny
(except for a couple of songs composed by blonde singer Agnetha)
2) You heard the final piano solo on TikTok, performed by the pianist Benny,
because it was a worldwide trend due to the return of ABBA after 40 years with two new songs
(finally and enter full album, and a new virtual concert in London UK since May 2022)
ABBA's the best. The two guy's wrote the songs and their wives sang most of them. Their Swedish and are huge worldwide. They wrote and put a perfect ABBA spin on about every genre of music. Both girls are top notch vocalist and took turns taking the lead on different songs. They perfected their harmonies ( It's known as their third voice) and could fall into them at the drop of a hat. I'd recomend you do one with Anni-Frid taking the lead next. "Fernando" was a huge hit with her in the lead. Thanks and welcome to the world of ABBA.
Abba was so popular in Europe and Australia. I never knew why they were not popular in America back in the 70s and early 80’s.
One thing to notice is the wonderful diction. You can understand everything they sing. And Frida and Agnetha always sung in harmony. No screaming matches trying to outdo each other like many singers today. The two voices, Agnetha a little higher than Frida’s , blended so well.
I think your memory of them not being popular in the USA during that time period is incorrect, this is also verifiable on the US Billboard Top 100 and they had 20 songs that reached the Top 10 in this country.
Great song from a great group and great reaction. One of my favorite ABBA songs. The two men Benny the pianist and Bjorn the guitarist wrote all their songs and could play most any instrument. Their wives Agnetha and Ani-Frid aka Frida or Annie sang them. Nobody harmonizes like Frida (auburn hair) and Agnetha (blonde girl) nobody. Please do Fernando next where Frida sings mostly lead. Nice reaction young lady.Just to let you know that During the pandemic in the covid lockdown this song was sang by people from balconies to give hope and patience to each other .This was a worldwide hit in 1979 and even in many Latin American countries went so big that managed phenomenal , unpreceded record sales.i.e.In Mexico it was no1 for 32 weeks.It is still considered an anthem there up to now since it's already blended in their music culture.Try more Abba plz.

ABBAs back after 40 years! New album last year. New avavatar aka abbatar concerts in a arena they had specialy built. It's so real you feel you are actually watching them. Don't call them holigrams Benny said lol. They spent months wearing special cameras to capture every movement in every routine so It's really theim. And of course it's their voices. Hope it comes to U.S.

ABBA has over 100 songs in their catalog from good to great and none bad imo. Other ABBA gems are: I am the City, My Love My Life, Lovers Live a Little Longer, My Mamma Said, As Good As New... There's a bunch more. Can't go wrong with ABBA.

ABBA ( Agnetha, Bjorn, Benny, Anni-Frid “ Frida “) is a band from Sweden who were initially active from 1972-1982. The Name comes from the 4 members initials. They were 2 married couples but both marriages ended in divorce in the late 70’s / early 80’s. Their big break came from winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with Waterloo. Benny wrote the music and Bjorn wrote the lyrics, Agnetha and Frida share lead lead vocals but the magic happens when they sing together “The 3rd Voice of ABBA”. They have sold over 400 million albums worldwide. Their music is the bases for the musical Mamma Mia and the 2 films Mamma Mia ! (2008) and Mamma Mia Here we go again (2018). They were approached a few years ago to put on new concerts using digital versions of themselves as they were in the 1970’s and as a result of this they decided to record a couple of new songs to be performed as well as their older hits. They enjoyed recording them so much that they decided to do a new album called Voyage which was released on 5th Nov 2021 almost 40 years after their last Album The Visitors and has sold over 2.5 million so far. I suggest you listen to the Greatest Hits Album entitled ABBA GOLD which was 1st album to spend 1,000 weeks on the UK charts enjoying 3 spells at number 1 (1992, 1999 & 2008) and today it is still in the charts. but also listen to their Album songs and b sides because they contain many a hidden gems many that could have been singles.
The 2.5 million cpoies of 'Voyage' you mentioned is only the figure of copies sold on vinyl (!) worldwide so far.. the impact on the download charts has been incredible as well, for instance on spotify it reached the number one spot in over 18 countries.. even in the USA it reached to number two, which hasn't happened with any other album by them over there, ever! 😍
It remains my absolute favourite track. It’s about true support and friendship between women and gives hope for us all.
Another interesting perspective is that because it’s about ‘a little girl ‘ and released for the UNICEF international year of the child that it could be from a parent to their child after a death or divorce.

They are so wonderful!!....♥....PS: Frida looks like a young Priscilla Presley.....there's nothing I enjoy more than watching these videos of people who have never enjoyed ABBA before....always a pleasure and I've never seen anyone disappointed...If you didn't know Benny (the pianist) and Frida (dark hair) were married, as were Agnetha & Bjorn....Frida was born Norwegian, the product of a Norwegian woman and a German soldier (known as lebensborn children) during WWII.....I believe her mother died young and she was raised in Sweden by her aunt...the children of Norwegian woman and the German soldiers were badly treated by Norway after the war...Frida was lucky and was raised in Sweden....

My mum loves abba , my dad loved queen, I had a great musical education.
That was a real chiquitita 🍌 smoothie from '79 .. them gals vocal Dynamics were just crazy through the roof .. Chiquitita is spanish for little girl. At the time this song was written Björn Ulvaeus, the man with the guitar, and Agnetha Fältskog, the blond girl, was married to each other and their marriage was starting to fall apart. The rumor has it that the lyrics is about their daughter when they noticed she had noticed something was wrong. This is something Björn denies of course. By the way, the other two in Abba was also a couple.

There are dozens of reactions to ABBA's hits but not so many to their lesser known songs which are ALL excellent but some grow on you. You could do worse looking at the alphabetic list of their songs on spotify and picking a song which sounds interesting. In the unlikely event that you fond a song which you do not actually like we would all be interested in why and we could then point you to similar ABBA songs which may grow on you.
They (the guys)wrote all their songs themselves and yes, those voices are magical, especially the combination. their music will stay alive forever. Actually met Frida a couple of times in Sweden (she dated one of our bosses).

The original is from Germany by Nana Mouskouri "Chiquitita" from 1974. The woman has been a star since 1961, she wrote it.
You got it all wrong.
1) This is a song written by ABBA in 1979 not Nana Mouskouri in 1974.
2) Nana Mouskouri or Νανά Μούσχουρη is Greek not German and she lives in Greece, in fact very close to where I live.
3) Nana Mouskouri has been a star since 1958 not 1961.
4) Nana Mouskouri did a cover version in 1984.
