    If you run a light edc you'll be super pleased with it. I picked up one last week and couldn't be happier. Sure it's not the 1.4 but that's something to be thankful for if you're carrying it around 24/7. This and a 35mm make a brilliant little kit.

    I have this along with the X-T30. It's light, compact and super sharp. Just an amazing lens, so happy to have it with the X-T30. I now have a street rig that does what I need to do. Great AF, contrast, super sharp and very good bokeh. There is distortion, and not an insignficant amount, but LR can easily correct it. The CA is what you'd expect, modest, and correctable.

    If only Fuji would show the 18mm f/2 some love. Weather sealing and faster focussing, in the same compact package - I'd be all over that.

    Great review, as always. I just want to know who built that brick wall at 3:55 - it's a shocker...adds a whole new dimension to those lens review 'brick-wall-distortion' shots! lol.

  • @sveinmyrvang9410

    Seems like a missed opportunity to not test this lens with the x-pro2. 16mm fills the field of view of the finder perfectly, and unlike the f/1.4 the f/2.8 looks like it won't block out the lower right corner of it.

  • @truecuckoo
    @truecuckoo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Great stuff. I haven’t kept up to date, and totally missed the launch of this lens. My compact wide all time favourite is the fujifilm 18mm. How much larger is this? Just a little bit larger, right? Will check it out.

    • @sonholee5769
      @sonholee5769 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      not clear why the 18mm is not well liked or at least by some.
      I have the 27mm, 35mmf2.
      I think my next purchase is the 50mm f2. Maybe the 23mm, but it's so close to the 27mm in length.

    • @JespersenPhoto
      @JespersenPhoto 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sonholee5769 the biggest problem with the 18mm is the focus ring. It is so loose and hysterical, when you touch it, without turning it - it will move focus from e.g. 1 to 5 meters... And then there is the price. But other than that, a great little sharp lens!

    • @sonholee5769
      @sonholee5769 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JespersenPhoto Do you mean In manual focus? It is not at all precise in manual focus for sure.
      I dislike using the f2 fujicron lenses and the 27mm and the 18mm in manual focus. I'm wondering if the 35mm 1.4 or the 23mm 1.4 feel better in manual focus.

    • @JespersenPhoto
      @JespersenPhoto 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@sonholee5769 yes manual focus. Especially when using zone focusing. Set it to 2 meters. Next time you touch the camera it is totally off. The 23mm f/2 is much better in that regard. But focus by wire is not good for manual focusing anyway...

    • @megansalt
      @megansalt 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have both. The only thing I don´t like about the 18mm is the noise it makes when it focuses. As for weight and size, the 16mm 2.8 is just a teensy bit heavier, I don't really notice it and I actually like it because the 18mm, to me, feels a bit too light, like I'm not holding a strong camera.The only reason I got the 16mm 2.8 is because I like wide angle, otherwise I would stick with the 18, it's a very good lens.

  • @monlegaspi

    nice lens - I am new to Fuji from Canon - the small and light X T-3 and these small primes are so much easier to carry. I like the images I have taken so far with this camera and lens combo - especially in the Acros film simulation mode.

    Good and small lens for landscape and some travel/street photography.
    But, I think I'm just keeping my 18-55mm f2.8-4 kit lens, because it has the same f2.8 aperture at the wide end even though I'm losing a little bit of wider reach (like 24mm vs 28mm on full-frame).

    a little bit of a shame it's a bit soft at 2.8 like the other compact fuji lenses but I do love them and one of the reasons I decided to get the xt30 was because of the compact system and this line of lenses! so I think it's worth it overall. I put my 16-50 3.5 on a T-2 a couple days ago. Very impressed with it's macro. You don't show how close this lens focuses. I'd be amused by comparing it to the kit lens for center sharpness. That 16-50 has very fast focussing.

    I hope Fuji release a new F2 WR LM version of this 16mm or 18mm lens and under 200g. Because the new XF16-50 at 240g makes this lens redundant. Maybe the 18mm Mkii with WR and LM? That would be awesome.
    That being said, it doesn’t have to be pancake if the IQ is improved though.

      @They Caged Non Now it is 2.8 and I wish if it could have been more like 2.4 or 2.2 if not fully 2.0. F/2.8 is a bit too slow for this price IMO.

    • @CebastianRosing
      @CebastianRosing 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agree with Coni here. The lens was obviously made to be in line with the fantastic f2 line in formafactor over the f2 mark. At this focal range, with F2 you'd be walking around with a bigger and heavier lens. If one has that need, the 1.4 is there.

    • @MusabJilani
      @MusabJilani 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, I've been considering buying it, but my XC 16-50mm gives me f/3.5 at 16mm. This prime doesn't even have a full stop better light-gathering, and the XC kit zoom is sharp enough in the center (I usually shoot at 16mm indoors where my image sharpness is limited by ISO noise, not lens optics). Now, if this had been f/2 like the other fujicrons, I would have jumped at it.

      @sorenmelchior 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@bobbybrandnew3277 Sorry about the delay in reply, it's been a super busy week. Both lenses are very sharp, though the prime I think is a bit sharper than the zoom. I use both for different situations. When weight is a concern I bring the prime, as it is much lighter than the zoom. If I am shooting something that's in lower light I often choose the prime as well (for Aurora that 1.4 is sweet). But if I need the super wide 8mm.... then I have to bring the zoom. Honestly I wish Fuji made a nice fast 8mm prime. As I prefer the sharpness of the primes to the zooms, even as high quality as this zoom is. If I could get a 8mm 1.4, I would likely sell the zoom and get the 8 mm. As I often only use the ends of that zoom, and don't really shoot much in the 10mm - 14mm range, as I am always using the 8mm or 16mm focal lengths for my architectural work.
      So the choice is really going to come down to how you plan to use them? Also cost being a factor as the zoom is twice what the 1.4 prime is. Remember you can always rent the lenses to try them both out side by side. Then once you see how you use them, make a decision on which to purchase. I hope this helps a bit.

My main interest in this 16 f/2.8 is how sharpness compares to the much more expensive XF16-55 f/2.8 Zoom, which is quite sharp indeed at 16mm and optimum apertures between f/8 and f/11. I've printed superb 18" x 27" poster prints (with the XF16-55 and X-T3) showing fabulous detail retention at that enlargement. So, was wondering if I'd get even better/more detail/sharpness from this prime lens. Thanks again! P.S. - In other reviews, I've noticed that you call the Nikon Z6 the Nikon "Zed" 6. What's up with that? Thanks!

      "Zed" is how the letter z is pronounced in every English-speaking countries except the US, and Chris is from Canada.
      Regarding the main point, it's almost universally agreed that the 16 f1.4 is super sharp, sharper than the f2.8 zoom and definitely sharper than this new 16 f2.8

    Damn,when you make a review for fast lens,in this case 2.8,you should make samples on this f stop man,not like f8 or f16 bruh!!
    Refering on your logic i will better keep my 16-50 3.5-5.6,shoot on 16mm f8,and spare lots of $ lol

      There are also other reasons to still want a prime instead of a zoom. Size, autofocus speed etc. Then I haven't even mentioned the character and optical properties of the lens which are way more important.

    Have they not missed an opportunity to go just a little faster? f2 perhaps like the 23, 35 and 50?
    It's a hard sell (I think) for everyone with an 18-55 which has 18MM f2.8 in its repertoire.

    A good quality of review as always. But thanks to Jordan and yourself? Guys I'd have preferred an update to the equivalent of the classic 28 f2 (18 f2 on Fujifilm). The 24 (16mm) is a landscape lens, and a slow one too at f2.8.

    I don't really see the point of this lens. f2.8 isn't wide enough to merit owning over a standard zoom and 16mm on APS-C is a bit too wide to use as a walk around lens at least for me personally.

      It's smaller than a wide prime (like the 16 1.4) and way way smaller than the zooms, and higher build quality and optical quality than the muffin zoom (15-45mm).
      To some of use it's the right set of compromises.

  • @stanleyprendergast2133
    @stanleyprendergast2133 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    I already have the 23mm f2 WR.. so there is no real need to get the 16mm correct. It’s just 11.2mm deference. If it was let’s say 10mm then I could see getting it. I wish I would have known about this lens two months ago. I’m also new to Fuji coming from a Canon background.

    • @problemat1que
      @problemat1que 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you go wide angle, a few mm make a huge difference. I can easily tell the difference between an 18mm and a 16mm shot, let alone between 23 and 16. 10mm is again a totally different animal. Enjoy the system, much to explore! If you can hack manual focus, have a look at the Samyang (aka Rokinon) 12mm F2.

    • @stanleyprendergast2133
      @stanleyprendergast2133 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      problemat1que Well I didn’t really Add any comments about what a singular person’s preference would be for me to spend $400 plus tax for a wider angle and now have to carry a third lens because I normally do street photography and have the 50 mm and the 23 mm so adding a 16 mm would be nice but I don’t think a necessity from my style of shooting at this point. And when I do landscapes I take out my canon 10 mm
