Last night I was at the Roxy Hotel (2024), and the very excellent band of session players at their bar was playing this tune. I went to the keyboard player and said "Bonus if you can do the Kenny Kirkland solo", and he grinned from ear to ear. He knew exactly what I was talking about. Did a credible version of it too.
i enjoyed every band Sting created. They all had their own uniqueness. But Dolette got to travel with Sting and they were awesome creatively with their dances, live. I enjoyed immensely on youtube.
I went to high school with Kenny. We were in the Glee Club together in my senior year and his junior year. Kenny walked with a limp from childhood polio. He was always smiling and friendly, and didn't talk much, but liked to kid around. There were two bands from the school that played in at the very popular school dances (other bands as well, including The Brooklyn Bridge and Alive and Kickin').....a band Kenny was in that consisted of music department kids, including a horn section, which specialized in music by Chicago and Blood Sweat and Tears, and a band that I was in that was composed of mostly self-taught guys who did an eclectic mix of folk, rock, Prog, and whatever. I play the organ. Kenny played the sax in his band! he was the 4th best piano player in the department, if that! He didn't starting playing jazz until he was in college. I heard he was in a terrible car accident at 19, and got addicted to the pain medication......
I saw this band on this tour in 88, Kenny was pure fire, he was 33 but looked 53 and very conservative. His playing had everything, I'd never have guessed he was a massive coke user.
Not an easy task to upstage Branford Marsalis on that tour, but Kenny Kirkland did it nightly. What gets lost in the mix is the insane bass and percussion that was happening at the same time. POWERHOUSE band.
She also played with Wayne Shorter, and is the daughter of the great New York drummer Jimmy Wormworth (famous for his association with "Lambert, Hendricks and Ross").
nothing wrong with both having fun in music and making it a real multilevel *performance* ~part of the reason you even know the guy's name happens to be because of the latter, love it or hate it.
except you nor any of the people watching the solo here or otherwise would even experience the solo whatsoever without sting both existing and being gratified from live performance.
This was the best Sting era by far! Kenny Kirkland on piano, Monster!!!! Rip.
young people ! THIS IS MUSIC

Kenny killed- what the @#$% was Sting doing?
Enjoying himself since he wrote all the songs? Settle down lady
Methinks Sting was more into his dance moves than Kenny's solo.
Great question
leave it to internet nobodies to gatekeep great musicians from actually having fun onstage, 30 years ago at that

Who is the drummer?
Omar Hakim
Sting broke into a river dance funky soul groove thing there and looked a complete tosser . Rescued by the band and a great vibe.
I think that for a minute there, he was identifying as Janet Jackson.

Same joke each night, just for fun 😉
Reverse the roles, and today's society would immediately attack anyone who did NOT take it as a joke
