LIKE always, outstanding episode, it boggles my mind to think that a lot of the art they did was with techniques we take for granted these days with technology that fakes a lot of the methods, thus I still work with dip pen and Indian ink to experience the hard work that goes into making art. I have been looking at old books on how they rendered their artwork and still find that even so many years on, their work still outmatch a lot of today's artist, thank you for broadening our art knowledge Pete, truly appreciate it.

5:55 If I'm not mistaken, the reason that the project never concluded was that the author died, which is why the book was released postumusly without an ending, though still with illustrations.
It just boggles my mind how hard it is to attain so much information and research time to edit a video documentary about all these amazing artists...love the work you do Pete!

I’m just an accountant but became interested in this topic after becoming frustrated with the cartoony illustrations (and dumbed down language) in many modern children’s books. On my quest for beautiful, quality picture books to read with my preschooler I’ve stumbled upon your series and enjoy it greatly. Thanks again

I agree - although until I made the video I had no idea Lada existed. Some countries seem to keep their cultural heritage more to themselves than others.
@@petebeard l clicked on this right away when l saw the Joseph Lada thumbnail. The Good soldier Shweik, got a wider audience almost immediately as it was avidly translated. It was the 1st anti war book thanks to the mindless carnage of youth in WWl. But it didn't bring Lada himself to wider audience, you're right. l was enchanted by the illustrations as a child as they are deeply silly and reminded me of the folkish vigour of Wanda Gag. The above book he illustrated was much shared around in military circles in WWll l was informed by a elderly relative, as the "over obedience" strategy of the anti hero was much admired, as was it's humorous scepticism. This was reported to me by ex air crew, they were given an life expectancy of 22 weeks during the bombing raids, but he actually lived until 93 in spite of 3 air crashes! Haha,
I've been getting my money's worth from the individual channel search function since meeting you and that's a fact. More than I expected as always but here specifically for Josef Lada who has a special kind of McLuhanist "the medium is the message" artistry. One wonders if he is a genius or an artist at the very extremes of his ability in the same way that one looks at Svejk (and reads of him) wondering if he is truly an idiot or is he in fact pulling the wool over everyone's eyes. It is also extraordinary how many, on the face of it, Rackhamesque illustrators there are, who folk have never heard of.
Morning Pete.... at least it's morning here anyway. Another very informative video with one artist being my favorite, Neysa McMein.... her style of work is what I strive for every day. Originally a traditional artist myself, I wonder today if any young digital artists could achieve similar work traditionally like McMein or are they stuck in the digital world unable to reach that level. In some cases they are similar but traditionally, there is no "undo" button.
Hello again John. I suspect the best of the digital artists would be able to re-train themselves. But it's that ability to erase your mistakes infinitely which is the seductive part of digital means. I can remember having to patch physical artwork because a client decided there was a bit they didn't like after all. I think most of the great newer digital painters came out of tradition first and still believe in good drawing.
@@petebeard I agree. There were many times I had to fix things also and sometimes it was very difficult. Back in the day you had to really plan your work in advance to avoid issues.
Lucky dip of today: there are four Great artists I ain’t known before. Jones, McMein, Calvo Lada, Their work was not Dada. I’m so glad that there are many more.

The latter Perhaps, because I was 'traumatized' as a young kid by Wilhem Busch's " Max & Moritz" book. Believed it was a real story. People in ovens getting pooped out by ducks ... thought "Oh, that's not right, nooo." Another reason don't like 'Beavis & Butthead'. Learned from your videos Pete *vivisection* was a commonly used word back then. Who knew?
Hello and La Bete is wildly disturbing. I think it's the Disneyesque/Merrie Melodies styling that makes it so weird because we associate the style with jolliness and relative innocence.
Well, I'm hoping that I can keep doing this for a few more years at least, but my story is fairly dull even to me, so it will probably be best if I just leave the videos for posterity, and maybe get remembered that way.
The only thing better than seeing your favorite illustrator is being introduced to a new unfamiliar favorite illustrator. Thank you.
