I am an old SL / ASL fan from WAAAAY back to the 70's I had original Squad Leader and got Cross of Iron, Crescendo of Doom, and GI Anvil of Victory in the early 80's . Much later in life I picked up an ASL rulebook Beyond Valor, Paratrooper, Yanks, Partisan, West of Alamein, The Last Hurrah, Hollow Legions, Code of Bushido, Gung Ho, Croix de Guerre. Also added 6 historical module including the Deluxe ASL. Never did master the rules to be honest. Life, work, kids, I still have pride looking at my collection on the bookshelf, but almost all my wargaming is on the computer for the last 20 years. I will always be an ASL fan.
Not only do I cut out all the counters I must trim each and every corner. All in special plastic boxes neatly arranged. Now I am in a rocking chair at Sunny Rest Home for the mentally deranged...
I just ordered Beyond Valor based on your video. I bought the rulebook a while back to supplement the starter kits, but was never brave enough to go "all in" with Module 1. Thanks for the nudge!
@@WARdROBEPlaysWWII The green is for level 0. It has nothing to do with what it actually looked like. It could be dirt, grass, sidewalk, rocky field, or even a town square. Same for buildings and trees. Could be winter but trees will still be green. I always think of the maps more like a schematic then a picture.
Nice Unboxing. Just want to add: Its basically a reprint of the 3rd edition but there are some minor changes (info according to Klas Malmström) : New counters: 36 × No HE, No AP, No SMOKE, etc. 2 × AAMG Malfunction/Disabled. 2 × Gun Malfunction/Disabled. 4 × Intensive Fire. 4 × stun. 4 × STUN. 4 × Abandoned. 4 × Shock. 6 × 1/2" Acquisition (Russian brown). 6 × 1/2" Acquisition (Finnish gray). 6 × 1/2" Acquisition (German blue). 2 × Turn Marker (German/Russian and German/Finnish). 1 × 1942 DB. These above are instead of the 80 blank 1/2" and one blank 5/8". Changed counters: 2 × Lahti 20L ATR: updated to the HP counters look. 1 × 37 PstK/37(g): Finnish 37L AT Gun updated to the HP look. 12 × 2-4-8 HS (Russian): broken MMC depiction changed to correct depiction. 12 × Gray Dispersed WP: “NMC” removed from the counter. 4 × Pz 35R 731(f): name changed on counters. 6 × PzKpfw IVF2: no longer has an APCR Depletion Number for 1944. 1 × PSW 234/3, ID-letter “C”: star added to CMG factor and text “[star] MG:VCA only” added on the back. 1 × SdKfz 10/4: halftrack movement-type symbol added on unhooked trailer side. 5 × JgPz VI: white dot beneath front Armor Factor removed. 8 × Human Wave: counters now have correct information on the back. There is also a PaK and a FlaK Gun that should be added to the list of changed counters. All sheets with (c) 2015 except sheet #1 that they for some reason had a lot of leftovers from 2005 printing.
No Move counter: applies to night rules. The rule reference is on the counter. BF 24: Bow Flamethrower on the tank. Very nasty. :) The black counters with the flashes are muzzle blast counters for night scenarios. 1st edition came out in 1985. 2nd edition included Red Barricades 3rd Edition has everything you showed. Interestingly, only 1 scenario from Cross of Iron made it to BV: Debacle at Koresten. :)
$20 you say, I looked up getting this and the 2nd edition rulebook and it comes to a whopping $220.00 with shipping. $20!?!? I mean it is just a bunch of paper and cardboard, but I've read nothing but praises for ASL, only youtube comments are saying negative things.
ASL is great. I played SQ in 1978 when I was a young kid... I played ASL later on in my Teenage years... I would still play it again if I could find someone in my area. I collected all the SL and almost all the ASL modules; missing just a few new ones. ASL is not for the simple minded person. Maybe rules and much time put into it to learn and apply them. My cousins use to say 'You were born to play ASL, not taught."
I can’t. Because they can? I have a limited grasp on the pricing of games. The components are one thing, the hours of design and scenario design account for some element.
This isn't a game of Monopoly we have here. I don't have enough little grey cells (or patience) to even think of entertaining this game. Too complex. Let's have a game of table tennis, more my style...

Cool story, thank you for sharing.

I hope there are at least a few asl players at the Sunny Rest Home for ya to clobber with your fancy punched units. 😁

You're welcome? Enjoy the hours of gaming.
Where did you get it from and how much was it? It's quite scarce here in Scotland :(
From Cool Stuff Inc. I'm not sure what shipping to Scotland would be. They still have some in stock: www.coolstuffinc.com/p/138035

Thank you for that information.
1:50 I've lost TOTAL CONTROL!!!
I got this module November 2020. I'm still punching out counters today.
Yes Yes, that fresh unboxed smell..crisp components...Might get it just for the corrected color Finns

Fantastic outlay of the maps Impressive display!!
Thank you
Cool video & how the Finnish counters are different colored than the regular German Army ones
Great unboxing. Thank you.
You’re welcome
Have fun cutting out those counters, took me about a month...heheh
Nice video...
milky55way2012 - I just finished - it took about a month or so.
Just recently pu the AH version, opened but un-punched
Have fun
Parikka, Tuuri are common finnish surnames, but Peka and Vaalerian?
I don’t know.
I purchased this when it first came out and it was 20$ back then.
Except the boards were made on hardboard and not flimsy cardboard.
Times have changed.
And I still have it with all the other modules. I miss playing a good game of ASL.
I bought this retail. I think it came out the same time the rulebook came out 1985. I can't recall the price.

Can someone explain to me why they are so expensive?
I can’t. Because they can? I have a limited grasp on the pricing of games. The components are one thing, the hours of design and scenario design account for some element.
How long did it take to learn?
It's a lifelong journey
