Harry Baker - A Lockdown Poem

I was asked to write something looking back on lockdown for the Bristol Young Heroes Awards in December, and by the time I'd finished writing it we were back in lockdown again! (and have since come out and gone back in a third time...) but wanted to share this this while we're still in the middle of it as a reminder that we have made it through before and will again x

I remember you. You’ve inspired me before. I asked the world aloud just hours ago where the poets are, because where I live there’s something called the National Security Law, and I just want you to know that people like you remind me to speak in a world of civil unrest, violence, oppressed silence, you insist on hope faith and resilience, you demonstrate a way of resistance through words.
My city is a story that you’ve no doubt heard. I am one of those people who have it worse. But just about six years ago I think you said it first, you believe in people.
And so tonight I’m grateful, for artists like you. I want you to know that I look up to you for what you do. Thank you.

Hi Harry... I love your poetry. I love to write poetry and you alongside people like Tony Walsh from Manchester and Evrah Rose from Wrexham are an inspiration to to me, though I don’t see myself as a performance poet. I struggle in front of people with my nerves. It’s something I need to work on.
But I love poetry and being part of my local poetry community is so rewarding..
