You have to realize that most shortwave broadcast stations are not transmitted ftom their countries. Havana usually transmits from India. NHK Japan often transmits from Saudi Arabia. Some US stations like WINB transmitting from China, WBCQ from Kazakhstan, WWCR from Tibet, Radio Marti from South Asia to name a few. Many foreign stations also transmit from countries other than their own. As far as I know Greece, Saudi Arabia & Turkey have their transmitters in their own countries. Listening to a foreign broadcaster does not necessarily mean that the signal is coming from that country. Listening to a US station probably means that you're actually listening to DX.

Most major broadcasters still transmit from their homeland, Japan has many transmissions from Yamata, most others are from Madagascar and Austria, WBCQ, WINB, WWCR all transmit from USA WRMI also, you are not dxing listening to a US station in North America technically

The only lack for me of this little but powerful radios (i have the Tecsun PL-380 too) is there are no SSB function on the big part of them, i know just one Tecsun model, the PL-360, but i don't like the form factor and you can't put the frequency directly. Anyway, thanks for your advices.

Does your radio have an external antenna jack? Can you run coax from your preferred listening location like your favorite chair in the living room to outside where there there is less noise?

What radios do you recommend?? I've been looking at purchasing a Kenwood R-2000/ R-5000 used from the 80's but not sure how good they are exactly? Modern receivers like the Satellit 750 sound like poor performers when reading professional reviews but what's your thoughts? 80's receivers like the Kenwood and icoms are probably better than the Grundig series from today?

Can you tell me if window shutters cause interference? Also is it safe to connect the radio to a lightning rod via wire antenna for better reception (during a non stormy day ofc:))?
By the way thanks for "beginners" series, I'm picking up a lot from these since I'm having fun with my little tecsun sw radio

I moved away from my house and use a home made windom antenna. I live in Mississippi and pulled out RAF St Eval UK on 11253 USB on a radio shack portable. Trick was I moved out of the house and 100 yards away into my shop. Works pretty damn good I thought. Do you know what a Volmet station puts out as far as kW goes??

+Clubcanthandleme13 well I thought from Mississippi that a feat like that was pretty good. Maybe wrong though! Ha

Short wave listening is as dead as a dodo bird, try 30 years ago, these days maybe as an emergency radio is the only way a short wave radio will make sense.

Read the article, " Whatever happened to Shortwave, is all over google and is written by an expert, I agree with that article.

mares cressi S.W.L.ing is not dead. I thought it was-until Irma came my way and knocked out power to some 80% of Florida. I dusted off my old sets and found quite a lot. I think half of the problem is all the noise.Didn’t use to be so bad-especially in cities. This was the reason I lost interest.
Now I’m getting back into it (I still enjoy D-Xing(am as well as sw).
A great hobby, and keeps me out of trouble 🙂.
