      I hope this video serves as a PSA to remind folks to place chimney coverings over these openings. I've heard tales of a variety of birds flying down them and escaping into the living quarters. And then there are the poor unfortunate victims that descend into the chimneys of burning fireplaces.

    Beautiful ending to what could have been tragic. People should cover those chimneys with mesh so that other animals will not suffer the same fate.

    • @evilsharkey8954
      @evilsharkey8954 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

      It needs to be course mesh, though. My parents put 1/2” hardware cloth on their chimney to keep wood ducks from getting stuck and dying in there. One year, their wood was particularly low quality and plugged the screen with creosote, filling the house with smoke. They now use a sturdier, courser mesh.

      Not all that surprising actually, Owls are among the most intelligent of avian species (Ravens being the most intelligent.. Owls a very close second). They're even more intelligent than most mammal species and tend to have good awareness towards human behavior (relatively speaking of course, they are still wild animals and will instinctually flee from us, but I have observed owls show a great deal of calmness when being aided by humans compared to most other animals).

    • @Hathur
      @Hathur 2 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      @@partariothegoth Depends on what metric you're using to measure against. Do they have the problem-solving abilities that Raven's have? No (Ravens can solve human-made complex puzzles and have shown an ability to do basic arithmetic). Owls can't do this, true. But Owls show excellent observational awareness (and I don't mean their ability to spot a mouse in a bush hundreds of feet away). Whereas most animals panic at human presence (including domesticated animals like cats and dogs that end up as strays, they will frequently panic when you try to aid them if injured or trapped etc, not able to understand they are being assisted) - Owls, in my experience, will initially panic like most animals do at human presence..
      However,. they compose themselves quickly and assess the situation. When they realize the human is not harming them or attempting to harm them, they are quick to calm down. This makes rescuing / aiding owls much easier than rescuing stray dogs, cats or any other animal as owls pay close attention to their environment and make constant assessments. This is perhaps born of their keen ability to assess prey as they are one of the deadliest avian predators in existence, but regardless it manifests as a form of intelligence in their ability to analyze and understand real threats from mere perceived threats. More importantly, it displays an ablity to override instinct with some measure of logic.. and the ability to override instinct is one the most fundamental markers of intelligence. Language, math, etc, are not the only measures of intellect. Humans, generally, are superior not for our ability to do math, science or create language - but for our ability to override base instincts and utilize logic to better ensure our survival (well... some of us anyway.. a lot of humans still follow primitive instincts too often)

    I love owls so much. They're probably my favorite bird. Those and wrens. That's amazing how they both ended up in the chimney. I guess the male could hear her down in there and tried to get in there to her to maybe get her out and then he got stuck too. I had a great horned owl chick for a while when I was a kid that had gotten lost from his parents somehow. My uncle found it and brought it to us to try and raise because we were like amateur wildlife rehabilitators back then just out of necessity. We lived in the woods, so lots of animals in need found they're way to us. The owl chick was so dang cool. I loved him. He had such an awesome little personality. He'd hop around in the house and turn his head all around like owls do, looking at us one way then another. Lhe would use his claws and beak together to climb on our furniture and stuff. You could put a glove on and get him to sit on your arm. He'd just sit there and look at you with those awesome eyes they have like they're staring into your soul. I feel sad for kids who grow up with parents who are terrified of most of the creatures of the world and don't get to experience anything like the things I did and they grow up and teach they're own children to be terrified of everything. For whatever reason, hootie, our great horned owl chick, just stopped taking food from us after about 2 weeks. No matter what we did or how hard we tried he just refused it. We knew then it was time to call an actual professional rehabilitator. He came and took him and raised him until he was old enough to release. He sent us pictures of him flying away after he let him go.(this was before the time everyone had a phone video camera) I'm really glad I got the chance to be around Hootie for as long as I did.

This shows how smart wild animals can be, way different from some "humans" that behave like stupid beasts (as someone that drinks alcohol before driving a car or a truck).

    it makes me wonder when animals are trapped in certain situations and are rescued..do they recognize the past dangers and avoid them again?..i surely hope so.

    So am I understanding this correctly: the male owl went out to find his missing mate and flew down to her down the chimney? 😢 My heart is in pieces, what an incredible bond 💔

      And the female owl went in to rescue their offspring from the previous year. The whole family is strong in love. They are from Arizona as mentioned by the contributor Kay.
