    Leslie truly was my favourite gameshow host of all time!!!
    He was a rare host who realised that the show was mainly about the contestants, and not themselves!

    Thanks for throwing this in - all it needs now is this and a bag of chips, which my Dad would pick up and we (the family) would watch the TPIR.

    The best showcase ever. Rolls to Southampton, QEII to New York, then back on Concorde! I would have wet myself.

    March 1984 was when I started a year long “Youth Training Scheme” in Carpentry - but never got a job when it finished. Also the year of the very hot and dry Summer in the U.K. Hard to be believe it was nearly 37 years ago.

      I remember being seven years old in March 1984 and moving to a new town and primary school. Wanting to be anywhere else and living for the weekend as a result; going out climbing trees and exploring the local area. Lying on the living-room couch with a stomach ache watching "Automan" then "The Price is Right" in the sunny evenings. That come on down music instantly takes me back. The human mind is an amazing thing.

    Absolutely Brilliant, I remember watching this actual episode when it first aired. Leslie Crowther was brilliant and a really nice guy too. I went with 29 other would be contestants, one of us did get called down. William G Stewart certainly did get everyone warmed up before the show coming out before the show started and was really entertaining and funny and chatting to the audience. Leslie Crowther definitely was an amazing Entertainer and it's great to see these episodes, certainly the 1st episode too, being shown again, thanks for uploading. And Norma definitely was a great contestant to have on the 1st show and great that she won 🏆

    Norma didn't get the trip to New York on Concorde because she wasn't within 10%. I never saw that in the U.S. version, but if you were real close without going over you get both showcases. I wonder if the two shows ever thought of exchanging hosts once in a while. Swap Bob Barker for Leslie Crowther. A sort of game show host foreign exchange program. That would have been fun. Many years ago I did go to a taping of the show in Los Angeles with Bob Barker. I didn't make it as a contestant. Oh, well.

      Fair enough. But I thought Brucie made it his own; in fact probably the best game show he did - even better than PYCR. The King. Also, when Brucie took it on the prizes were not shackled by the IBA upper limit. Happy days as The Showcase Showdown was often worth £20k upwards

    If anyones is wondering why the prizes are so terrible here its because the Independent Broadcasting Authority would limit gameshow prize budgets to £6000. If they had the same sort of prizes as the American version they'd be in debt by about 10 minutes into the programme. Really, what they should've done (and what they eventually did with later versions of the show) is reduce the length to 30 minutes (they'd still get the same budget) so they could get better prizes (eg: a car).

    • @betaman7988
      @betaman7988 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      After a bit of number crunching I calculated that the entire value of every item on offer here was £12579, over double the prize cap. I believe the IBA actually pulled the show off air halfway through the series as they were giving away too much. As a result, the wheel was replaced with a game called Supermarket in which a selection of items had to be placed on a counter in hope of totalling £20. The person with items that totalled the nearest to the figure went through to the showcase.

      Is that why they had the 10 percent away limit for the showcase final (really the only thing that was different from the US version at this point format wise)? It seemed strange, but makes sense if they had such a limited budget. As an aside.....something I noticed Leslie do here when they got to the bonus spin, was he didn't set the wheel on the 5 for it, rather the 100 again. I can only assume it was a mistake since the rule for the US show has always been you get 1 spin only for a bonus that must go all the way around (hence if Norma landed on the 5 here it would not have done that), but I don't know exactly what their policy woulda been. I would assume it to have been the same though.

    I believe there's a brief anecdote related to the opening where William Gladstone Stewart wanted to start the series with a name to rhyme with "Come On Down", and there was someone in the audience called Mary Brown. The plan went awry when Mary Brown refused to come on down to Contestant's Row.

    ATV originally bought the format of The Price Is Right along with Family Fortunes in 1979 but the former was problematic with the IBA which meant that it was not done until 1984 under Central

    Although this format is the better known one adapted from the US, the original one debuted all the way back in 1956!
    The original show debuted in the US in November 1956 on NBC with host Bill Cullen. It would move over to ABC in September 1963, and would remain there until its cancellation in September 1965. The revamped format, the better known one, debuted in CBS daytime in September 1972 with host Bob Barker. The weekly syndicated version that debuted around the same time was presented by Dennis James. Barker took over the nighttime show in September 1977 until it was cancelled in 1980. A daily nighttime syndicated show was attempted starting in September 1985, but with Tom Kennedy hosting. That would only last one year. The final syndicated attempt began in September 1994 with Doug Davidson presenting. That only lasted until January 1995. Barker finally retired from hosting in June 2007. He was replaced that October by current host Drew Carey.

      In October 1988, Crowther arrived drunk at a gala in Glastonbury. This made him realise that he had a serious problem and needed help. His alcohol addiction received much publicity. From January to 17 March 1989, Crowther was a resident in Clouds House, a drug and alcohol treatment centre near Shaftesbury. He never drank alcohol again.
