Is it just straight Imazapyr for killing the sweet gum trees? Just curious if you have to mix anything else with it or water it down? Thanks for this timely video as we are planting 500 pines in March.
We just signed the contract for fist thinning of our 200 acre farm with about 110 acres of pines and 90 acres of hardwoods. The pines are about 15 years old and we are cutting every 3rd row and the rest to get to a BA of about 50. How soon after thinning would you suggest our first burn? We are in southern part of Alabama. Any other suggestions would be appreciated as well. Thanks for the awesome videos.
Tyler - Sounds like nice work! I would wait a year or two to burn, pending on the amount of fuel. I would also be sure the logger doesn't remove the best hardwood trees. In addition, it's very, very important to treat the thinned pines for hardwood saplings or it will be come a desert for wildlife.
Hello, wondering how effective is hack and squirt for pine stand TSI? Will it effectively allow canopy to open up and get sunlight to forest floor? Don't really have option to have forester come in and thin trees. I have no desire to profit from any of the trees, 100% wildlife habitat. Thank you!
@GrowingDeerTV unfortunately harvesting them isn't an option for the next several years. In the meantime I would like to continue habitat improvements where/how I am able. Just trying to see how effective hack and squirt/drill and fill will be on pines, specifically this time of year and winter? If effective once pines die, will they drop their needles completely to open canopy?
60 basal feet per acre is a dream on my land. Ive probably got more like 1500. Pines and useless trees, and the landowner doesnt want to thin the trees because he wont make any money. He doesnt understand 80 acres of choked out land wont grow trees of value
Glad you addressed the sweet gum problem, I’ve got many in my pines to eliminate
great info

John - the the pines are merchantable it's better to have them harvested and use the profits for more habitat work.
