For us Indians, such acts are repulsive. However, its is not such a big deal in Canada and the West at large. Canada has had the Quebec separatists and there are many Indian reservations which are semi-autonomous (left to themselves). The US too has faced separatist movements, for example, in Hawaii. In India, police can arrest someone just for waving a black flag at a minor public figure; that is not the case in the other parts of the world. Yes, threats of terrorism and violence must be addressed seriously, but somebody can't be prosecuted or deported merely because they are considered to be "separatists" in some other country. One of the problems with our record is that most 3rd-4th gen Sikhs in Canada believe that justice wasn't served post the 1984 riots. The only connection they have with anything Indian is via occasional visits to the Gurudwaras where they may get influenced in a certain way. Indian politicians haven't helped either when they boasted "Ghusa Ghusa kar Marange"--why would these aforementioned sikh diaspora believe in India's denials of involvement? BTW, the US and other countries assassinate "terrorists" in other countries--that is also wrong. After all, we are a country of Gandhi and Ambedkar. Both of them did not advocate violence even against great injustice. What we have to tell these Sikhs is that getting justice in India is hard--there is nothing directed against Sikhs in particular. For us Indians, such acts are repulsive. However, its is not such a big deal in Canada and the West at large. Canada has had the Quebec separatists and there are many Indian reservations which are semi-autonomous (left to themselves). The US too has faced separatist movements, for example, in Hawaii. In India, police can arrest someone just for waving a black flag at a minor public figure; that is not the case in the other parts of the world. Yes, threats of terrorism and violence must be addressed seriously, but somebody can't be prosecuted or deported merely because they are considered to be "separatists" in some other country. One of the problems with our record is that most 3rd-4th gen Sikhs in Canada believe that justice wasn't served post the 1984 riots. The only connection they have with anything Indian is via occasional visits to the Gurudwaras where they may get influenced in a certain way. Indian politicians haven't helped either when they boasted "Ghusa Ghusa kar Marange"--why would these aforementioned sikh diaspora believe in India's denials of involvement? BTW, the US and other countries assassinate "terrorists" in other countries--that is also wrong. After all, we are a country of Gandhi and Ambedkar. Both of them did not advocate violence even against great injustice. What we have to tell these Sikhs is that getting justice in India is hard--there is nothing directed against Sikhs in particular. For example, the 1984 Bhopal Gas victims, survivors and their descendants haven;t received full justice; they still continue to fall sick and die.
This is not about separatist rhetoric where it can be argued that US and Canada have a different benchmark. If someone in US had threatened to blow a flight up, or (as in case of Canada) actually blew up a plane, then would that be considered just a matter of freedom of speech?
I don't know about Quebec separatists, but I doubt they are responsible for murdering hundreds of Canadian citizens. Regarding US, having seen their bloody retaliation for 9/11, it's hard to fathom what they would have done to the Khalistanis, had they blown up a plane full of US citizens.
