Nice seeing waters that inspired songwriter Jimmy Webb to write this when he was passing through town...and hearing Don Ho's longer/slower version with full lyrics. Glen Campbell recalled for Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel in 2006 ... "When Don Ho did Glen Campbell's Goodtime Hour, he gave me GALVESTON" (Don Ho`s 45 vinyl released Jan 1967). Don said "I didn't have any luck with this, maybe you will," recalls Campbell of Ho's slower version of song about a soldier recalling his Texas hometown.
The second verse was changed for Glen Campbell's version. I imagine it was to make it seem less like he's thinking of deserting. Stronger anti-war statement this way, I think.
Glen commented that Don Ho had recommended that he record the song. Glen and Jimmy were already working together but he hadn't considered it previously.

Yessir; Jimmy Webb (the writer) is on record that the original was a protest song.
Don Ho's version of this song came out before Glen Campbell's.
Don was the one who gave Glen his record and suggested he try covering this Jimmy Webb classic. Right you are. Blessings.

This record was doing well until Glen Campbell's record came out.
