I took your advice and spent several days with each lesson, until it's smooth and I can multitask while playing (playing without thinking or looking). Practicing about 2 hours a day. It's been so much fun learning, practicing, and watching it all come together! All the pieces of the puzzle really come together with this song, and I can't express with words how much I'm loving playing the banjo. I'm thinking and dreaming in banjo too now, haha... Jim I can't even begin to tell what you're lessons mean to me. Real quick I played the harmonica for 50 years,and 4 years ago I was diagnosed with stage 4 throat cancer needless to say I had a full larengectomy so can't breathe through my nose or mouth. And could not play any longer when I came out of surgery I found one of your lessons and I picked up a banjo and thanks to you I haven't put it down!! Cancer free 3 in a half years and it's because of your teaching I am cancer free thank you so much. And everyone just starting keep on keeping on. JIm I am a guitar player over 35 years ... wanted to learn banjo .. bought one and applied guitar approach to learning. After a bit kinda lost my way and knew to learn would be a commitment to learning the proper way .. back to basics with muscle memory .. letting my guitar experience be an asset and not the liability it had become. Be humble and do the beginner exercises properly . All this to say that your introduction lessons were exactly the inroad I needed. I play 2 hrs everyday .. am executing the patterns in the first 8 lessons well and hungry for more. THANK YOU !! I really appreciate your style to teaching .

I bought a banjo 2 weeks ago and I haven’t put it down since. Your video lessons make what could be something very difficult and break it down into something easy. Repetition is key. You may start out kinda clunky but before you know it, you’re playing without thinking. Thank you for the lessons and all the work you put into them.

@@MyersTheShape1978 I know, I’m a banjo rebel in my area. I have to play the banjo in secret or else I may be accused of treason. It’s a tough life but I make it by.
As a fingerstyle guitar player for over 40 years I thought I would take to the banjo easy, but in fact I have had to unlearn everything that I knew about fingerpicking on a guitar because it is very different than a 5 string banjo in fact I just wish I had learnt the banjo and would have never touched a guitar as that knowledge has hampered me with learning the banjo. So these beginner lessons have been an incredible help to me and although I found myself wanting to run before I could walk your discipline has been essential in slowing me down so that I do not miss the fundamentals which I will need later on. The chord side of the banjo is easy when compared with a guitar but the forward and reverse rolls are like learning another language to a guitar player. In order to achieve this I had to stop playing the guitar for two years to try to lose some of that muscle memory. I am so looking forward to learning all of the different styles of banjo as I once did with the guitar. I would have to say that your method of teaching is the best on You Tube and I have been so grateful that you were good enough to offer these taster lessons for free (especially during Cov19 lockdown) - Outstanding Sir thank you so much.

Ty for the videos, I have been playing guitar for a long time, then got, well, ok I guess on mandolin, now on to banjo, and I have found that the transition from flat pick to finger pick is brutal to get use to, as far as knowing the neck, I pretty much have that, but am most definitely an entry level beginner on finger picks, but I love the way you break it down, your channel has helped me tremendously, and just a huge THANK YOU!

Hi Jim. I’ve been a guitar and bass player for more than fifty years...not as good at it as I should be as life has its way of interfering. Last fall after being in Floyd VA for a week, I got the bug-went home, immediately bought a starter banjo from Deering, and then started looking for good lessons. I stumbled on your videos during my search, and worked through them...too fast of course...so I’m working back through it all again, slow this time. I’m working through some other flailing lessons too, and I’ve found that working on both methods at once is helping me a lot! And the insight of different teachers is helpful too. Back to you though, thank you for sharing your skills with those of us at the beginning of the game. I’ve picked up so much from you in such a short time, I’m thrilled to be playing this great instrument. Guitar is nice but this is better! So now giving myself a couple of years before I graduate to a higher quality instrument. With folks like you around, that day will come soon! (I better start saving up now!). Hi Jim. I just wanted to give you an update on my progress. I started playing in November and got about a month of solid practice in before I went back to sea on the ship I work on. I brought my banjo with me to the ship but couldn’t play as much as I wanted to working 12 hour days out there. I did manage to play some and dreamed of when I would have more time for playing. I spent 100 days on ship. Now I am back on my off ship rotation and have more time to spend playing. I am wrapping up lesson 9 and will move to lesson 10 probably in couple of days. I’m loving learning the banjo, so much so that I upgraded to a new banjo that I should receive soon I hope. I’m concentrating on tightening up Cripple Creek and beginning to sing the song. I continue to practice Banjo in the Hollow and of course I am working on Boiling Cabbage Down. I am really focusing on accuracy and not so much worried about speed. Anyway, I wanted give a big thank you for putting out these videos. You are a great teacher and really have great material, a lot of it. Thanks so much!!!
I got this, no problem, but the c-chord knocks me out of time cause it takes me long to get the shape, it's getting there with practice. Jim's words of wisdom are real encouragement to keep going.
I have been trying the C chord for a couple of weeks now, and while transitioning from some other chords goes alright (e.g. D7) getting into the full C quickly is just not happening!

Feeling really good about learning the banjo.. being well into my 70 s, I was concerned that my fingers would sieze up , but not so far. thanks again. Hi Jim, I bought my first stringed instrument - a banjo, in February and I am having so much fun learning to play. I bought a couple beginner books and have been following them very closely. I have been patient, practicing everything slowly, practicing the rolls, getting some muscle memory. I have had 2 excellent one on one lessons with a local guy. Then I found your Lessons on TH-cam! I can't tell you how much I enjoy them! Seriously, they have been SO helpful and so enjoyable. It's hard to be patient and not jump right to the next lesson. I can't tell you enough how much help these have been. I tried to learn ukulele in the past and the piano as well as guitar but every guide and tutorial has never seemed to really make sense. After watching this series and practice I was able to perform a little bit of Banjo in the Hollow and Cripple Creek at my school talent show, I didn't win anything but that doesn't matter, I had a lot of fun and really enjoyed playing the beautiful instrument that is the banjo. Hi Jim, I can't thank you enough for these wonderful videos. Where are you based by the way just out of interest? I'm not a stalker or anything honest! I started banjo only three weeks ago having never even touched a musical instrument in my life and I've just turned 44. I've looked at many videos on TH-cam and can honestly say that yours have been the most thorough, most simple, most enjoyable and most constructive that I have found! After really struggling with even just handling the banjo and the strange feel of the picks I have just conquered Cripple Creak (with a little polishing still needed admittedly) and am constantly practising this and all additional moves, pull offs etc. I promised myself that I would do at least half an hour a day and usually manage that and more and I am loving it you are a great character! Hey Jim, as like everyone else who has commented, I too watch every video you make and love your style of teaching. I am able to pick up what you are saying and doing much easier than other teachers and people on TH-cam. I've been playing the banjo for about a year now and I was luckily just able to buy myself a brand new Deering Calico! It was frustrating not really being able to play such a beautiful banjo but your videos are turning that around. My one question to you is where in the US would you be located? I am in Canada but depending on how south you are I would drive to you to get some 1 on 1 lessons if you do them. Thanks Jim!!

Was playing this for a friend (I'm a beginner) and after my 4 time round I'd forgotten the ending so just pick pinched at random. I got away with it! No one knew. If except the internet, of course!

I have had some problems with my Picky picks and the Blue chip Jd Crow thumb pick staying on they all seem to slip, Flnally hooray it might sound a like something some people may not like to do but If you wet index, finger and Social finger and thumb and than put the Picks on and start playing you will find you have to pull the picks off with force. It may not be for everyong but I have really made it my one item every time.
Hi Jim. Have learn a lot. Thanks! Wondering what thumb pick you use? Looks like a good fit. See it's probably one of those 40 dollar ones, which is all good. I ordered a set of Nationals with the white plastic to replace the cheapies that came with. Fingers are fine, but don't really care for the thumb. Big construction hand thumb, and it's just not comfortable/good fit after several weeks. Thanks in advance!
Another Thank You for your videos. I was given a mini-banjo and have learned on that. I find that it's hard to make a chord without my fingers touching another string and they all sound dead. Is it because my banjo is smaller that a regular banjo? Thank you in advance for your reply. Judy
@@JimPankey I still have a bit of a buzz going on. Head tension is at 90/91, everything seems tight. A guy looked at it this past week and said the frets need leveling ($200.00) which he doesn't recommend doing to that banjo. (Ibanez B200). I did swap bridges from one he put on back to the one I had and that has helped. I added spikes at 7 and 9, which I love! Thanks for that suggestion! The guy mentioned that the truss rod is all but unscrewed, otherwise it will buzz.
I have learned alot from your lessons thank you. Im having alot of fun. You're a great teacher. My number one string is tuned but when I press down on it it gets quiet and rattles. Any advice?
Hi Jim. Well I'm doing ok now with Cripple Creek and Banjo in the Hollow. It's finally sinking into my thick head lol. I'll admit that I had to write the tab down because I kept forgetting what to play and it has helped me by doing that. Now I can play them from memory and I'm slowly getting the hang of those rolls. I had a quick go at this tune and it doesn't seem too difficult. This might be a daft question, but I was thinking that with guitar or uke, if you know the chords e.g C and G, it's fairly quick and easy to strum a simplified version of a song. At first the bluegrass style banjo seemed really complicated and I thought each song would take weeks to learn, but does it work in a similar way that if you know the chords then you can use a standard banjo roll and play most songs, albeit in a simple form {until you add slides and pinches etc}? When I first bought my banjo I eagerly printed off a few tabs of songs, but although they told me the chords I had no idea how to play them other than strumming lol. I had no intention of playing bluegrass style but now I'm hooked thanks to your videos.
hey Jim, ive got a little problem, i cant get the C chord without toutching a snare or a 5 min hassle to put my fingers on the right spots. my neck width is 1.2 inch(3.1CM) and ive got pretty big hands for such a small neck. do you have some tips and tricks to help me find the correct positioning for my fingers? p.s after 2 weeks of trying the d7 chord i finaly got it without touching a snare 9out of 10 times.
Your neck width is fine. You will eventually get the chord without touching other strings. It just takes practice. There’s no “trick”. If you feel your finger touching a string it’s not supposed to, then make an adjustment.
Anyone else having trouble with the C-chord? My fingers don't want to seem to cooperate, but I've been working at it for a few weeks now. Do you have any advice for stubborn fingers?

My slides, forward, alternating, forward and reverse rolls, and chord positions might need a lot more work, but my 3 pinch 3 pinch is second to none!
My 4 pinch is pretty good so far.
JIm I am a guitar player over 35 years ... wanted to learn banjo .. bought one and applied guitar approach to learning. After a bit kinda lost my way and knew to learn would be a commitment to learning the proper way .. back to basics with muscle memory .. letting my guitar experience be an asset and not the liability it had become. Be humble and do the beginner exercises properly . All this to say that your introduction lessons were exactly the inroad I needed. I play 2 hrs everyday .. am executing the patterns in the first 8 lessons well and hungry for more. THANK YOU !! I really appreciate your style to teaching .

Repetition is key. You may start out kinda clunky but before you know it, you’re playing without thinking. Thank you for the lessons and all the work you put into them.

As a fingerstyle guitar player for over 40 years I thought I would take to the banjo easy, but in fact I have had to unlearn everything that I knew about fingerpicking on a guitar because it is very different than a 5 string banjo in fact I just wish I had learnt the banjo and would have never touched a guitar as that knowledge has hampered me with learning the banjo. So these beginner lessons have been an incredible help to me and although I found myself wanting to run before I could walk your discipline has been essential in slowing me down so that I do not miss the fundamentals which I will need later on. The chord side of the banjo is easy when compared with a guitar but the forward and reverse rolls are like learning another language to a guitar player. In order to achieve this I had to stop playing the guitar for two years to try to lose some of that muscle memory. I am so looking forward to learning all of the different styles of banjo as I once did with the guitar. I would have to say that your method of teaching is the best on You Tube and I have been so grateful that you were good enough to offer these taster lessons for free (especially during Cov19 lockdown) - Outstanding Sir thank you so much.

Got my banjo and fooled around with it for an hour or so, then stumbled on these lessons. He gets in the camera like he has never seen one before, but...AMAZING TEACHER! 2-3 hours on the banjo and playing these tunes (not perfectly) and loving it!

Ty for the videos, I have been playing guitar for a long time, then got, well, ok I guess on mandolin, now on to banjo, and I have found that the transition from flat pick to finger pick is brutal to get use to, as far as knowing the neck, I pretty much have that, but am most definitely an entry level beginner on finger picks, but I love the way you break it down, your channel has helped me tremendously, and just a huge THANK YOU!
Hello Jim, ...Donnie from Fairhope, Al....after having the urge for 13 yrs now, I bought my first Banjo about 3/ 4 months back and started with the beginners book first and about 2 months in I found you here....have gone from lesson 1 to here at 9 now...still working at it everyday 4 or 5 times a day...and having a blast....at 65 yrs old I never thought I'd get this far but I keep pushing along...You have really done an awesome job helping so many on here....I thank you very much for your help and instruction and encouragement...Christmas is 13 days away and I wish you and yours to have a very Merry Christmas...FYI...my first banjo was a Fender with resonator and then about 2 months ago I found me an open back and having the time of my life with both of them...take care and God Bless...

Hi Jim. I’ve been a guitar and bass player for more than fifty years...not as good at it as I should be as life has its way of interfering. Last fall after being in Floyd VA for a week, I got the bug-went home, immediately bought a starter banjo from Deering, and then started looking for good lessons. I stumbled on your videos during my search, and worked through them...too fast of course...so I’m working back through it all again, slow this time. I’m working through some other flailing lessons too, and I’ve found that working on both methods at once is helping me a lot! And the insight of different teachers is helpful too. Back to you though, thank you for sharing your skills with those of us at the beginning of the game. I’ve picked up so much from you in such a short time, I’m thrilled to be playing this great instrument. Guitar is nice but this is better! So now giving myself a couple of years before I graduate to a higher quality instrument. With folks like you around, that day will come soon! (I better start saving up now!). I’ve always been a Gibson guy...

Hi Jim. I just wanted to give you an update on my progress. I started playing in November and got about a month of solid practice in before I went back to sea on the ship I work on. I brought my banjo with me to the ship but couldn’t play as much as I wanted to working 12 hour days out there. I did manage to play some and dreamed of when I would have more time for playing. I spent 100 days on ship. Now I am back on my off ship rotation and have more time to spend playing. I am wrapping up lesson 9 and will move to lesson 10 probably in couple of days. I’m loving learning the banjo, so much so that I upgraded to a new banjo that I should receive soon I hope. I’m concentrating on tightening up Cripple Creek and beginning to sing the song. I continue to practice Banjo in the Hollow and of course I am working on Boiling Cabbage Down. I am really focusing on accuracy and not so much worried about speed. Anyway, I wanted give a big thank you for putting out these videos. You are a great teacher and really have great material, a lot of it. Thanks so much!!!

I got this, no problem, but the c-chord knocks me out of time cause it takes me long to get the shape, it's getting there with practice. Jim's words of wisdom are real encouragement to keep going.
I have been trying the C chord for a couple of weeks now, and while transitioning from some other chords goes alright (e.g. D7) getting into the full C quickly is just not happening!
Thanks JIm, this lesson 9 is bringing it all together for me.. It helped me to review previous lessons, then dive into this one. Feeling really good about learning the banjo.. being well into my 70 s, I was concerned that my fingers would sieze up , but not so far. thanks again. Looking forward to getting out, after the Covid, and and just playing along with others..

Hi Jim, I bought my first stringed instrument - a banjo, in February and I am having so much fun learning to play. I bought a couple beginner books and have been following them very closely. I have been patient, practicing everything slowly, practicing the rolls, getting some muscle memory. I have had 2 excellent one on one lessons with a local guy. Then I found your Lessons on TH-cam! I can't tell you how much I enjoy them! Seriously, they have been SO helpful and so enjoyable. It's hard to be patient and not jump right to the next lesson. Thank-you so much for posting all your beginner lessons. Now I know what "pickin' n grinnin" means.

Just a matter of the direction... we define forward as thumb index middle... reverse as middle index thumb.

I can't tell you enough how much help these have been. I tried to learn ukulele in the past and the piano as well as guitar but every guide and tutorial has never seemed to really make sense. After watching this series and practice I was able to perform a little bit of Banjo in the Hollow and Cripple Creek at my school talent show, I didn't win anything but that doesn't matter, I had a lot of fun and really enjoyed playing the beautiful instrument that is the banjo. Hi Jim, I can't thank you enough for these wonderful videos. Where are you based by the way just out of interest? I'm not a stalker or anything honest! I started banjo only three weeks ago having never even touched a musical instrument in my life and I've just turned 44. I've looked at many videos on TH-cam and can honestly say that yours have been the most thorough, most simple, most enjoyable and most constructive that I have found! After really struggling with even just handling the banjo and the strange feel of the picks I have just conquered Cripple Creak (with a little polishing still needed admittedly) and am constantly practising this and all additional moves, pull offs etc. I promised myself that I would do at least half an hour a day and usually manage that and more and I am loving it you are a great character! I will continue to watch and learn keep up the good work. Regards. Cliff

Hey Jim, as like everyone else who has commented, I too watch every video you make and love your style of teaching. I am able to pick up what you are saying and doing much easier than other teachers and people on TH-cam. I've been playing the banjo for about a year now and I was luckily just able to buy myself a brand new Deering Calico! It was frustrating not really being able to play such a beautiful banjo but your videos are turning that around. My one question to you is where in the US would you be located? I am in Canada but depending on how south you are I would drive to you to get some 1 on 1 lessons if you do them.

I have had some problems with my Picky picks and the Blue chip Jd Crow thumb pick staying on they all seem to slip, Flnally hooray it might sound a like something some people may not like to do but If you wet index, finger and Social finger and thumb and than put the Picks on and start playing you will find you have to pull the picks off with force. It may not be for everyong but I have really made it my one item every time.
Good tip. I’ve never had to do that, but I also wear my picks really tightly.

Looks like a good fit. See it's probably one of those 40 dollar ones, which is all good.
I ordered a set of Nationals with the white plastic to replace the cheapies that came with.
Fingers are fine, but don't really care for the thumb. Big construction hand thumb, and it's just not comfortable/good fit after several weeks.

Another Thank You for your videos. I was given a mini-banjo and have learned on that. I find that it's hard to make a chord without my fingers touching another string and they all sound dead. Is it because my banjo is smaller that a regular banjo? Thank you in advance for your reply. Judy
Could be because of the size, but could mostly be from lack of practice. Keep trying. Get up on the tips of your fingers.
As a Dobro player, I try to use my thumb any which way I can! 😁
Yeah... different over here in the banjoverse. I had to unlearn a bunch of banjo stuff when I took up dobro.
@@JimPankey I still have a bit of a buzz going on. Head tension is at 90/91, everything seems tight. A guy looked at it this past week and said the frets need leveling ($200.00) which he doesn't recommend doing to that banjo. (Ibanez B200). I did swap bridges from one he put on back to the one I had and that has helped. I added spikes at 7 and 9, which I love! Thanks for that suggestion!
The guy mentioned that the truss rod is all but unscrewed, otherwise it will buzz.
I have learned alot from your lessons thank you. Im having alot of fun. You're a great teacher. My number one string is tuned but when I press down on it it gets quiet and rattles. Any advice?

Hi Jim. Well I'm doing ok now with Cripple Creek and Banjo in the Hollow. It's finally sinking into my thick head lol. I'll admit that I had to write the tab down because I kept forgetting what to play and it has helped me by doing that. Now I can play them from memory and I'm slowly getting the hang of those rolls. I had a quick go at this tune and it doesn't seem too difficult. This might be a daft question, but I was thinking that with guitar or uke, if you know the chords e.g C and G, it's fairly quick and easy to strum a simplified version of a song. At first the bluegrass style banjo seemed really complicated and I thought each song would take weeks to learn, but does it work in a similar way that if you know the chords then you can use a standard banjo roll and play most songs, albeit in a simple form {until you add slides and pinches etc}? When I first bought my banjo I eagerly printed off a few tabs of songs, but although they told me the chords I had no idea how to play them other than strumming lol. I had no intention of playing bluegrass style but now I'm hooked thanks to your videos.
Yup... play some rolls change the chords. You can “fake it” thru anything. 😊

hey Jim, ive got a little problem, i cant get the C chord without toutching a snare or a 5 min hassle to put my fingers on the right spots. my neck width is 1.2 inch(3.1CM) and ive got pretty big hands for such a small neck. do you have some tips and tricks to help me find the correct positioning for my fingers?
p.s after 2 weeks of trying the d7 chord i finaly got it without touching a snare 9out of 10 times.
Your neck width is fine. You will eventually get the chord without touching other strings. It just takes practice. There’s no “trick”. If you feel your finger touching a string it’s not supposed to, then make an adjustment.
Anyone else having trouble with the C-chord? My fingers don't want to seem to cooperate, but I've been working at it for a few weeks now. Do you have any advice for stubborn fingers?
