Not really when it's only including sillier stuff they went back 20 years to find. Jackman has prepped for Wolverine 10 times now, picking out the stuff before he learned to train is just feeding the algorithm.
Really it should be progress/Hollywood training = steroids since BS Hollywood training needs to be multiplied by steroids to equal any meaningful progress
I would love to see a Hollywood guy who needs a good physique for a film come out and want to get trained by you. I would love to see how you well you train them
That laugh and sigh during the first push up was hilarious. The point you make about being able to eat sugar, even when cutting and getting lean was what kind of set me free. I can maintain a really strict diet comprised of healthy "not fun" foods for weeks on end. As long as I can eat once per week where I dgaf and eat what I want, including Reese's peanut butter cups, while staying within caloric goal. I even drink booze once per week. It's changed my ability to stay on target.
The thing about an actors workout and Dr Mike's workouts are two different goals. One is to be big and the other is to be in shape to do a movie. Also remembering that Hugh is a dancer. So being big is not the goal, its having enough stamina and muscle to make a movie during long hours of filming. Ultimately, his job is not to be big, but to be big enough to bring in the big money. I think he manages to do that very well. Imho Oh, and don't forget the lighting and make-up artist that help fill in the definition.
I had a trainer friend years ago who advocated (for function, not size/strength, at least in this portion of the workout) a month of heavy weights, and then a month of "hundreds". Basically, pick a dumbbell or a free weight and do 100 reps in a row. When you can't push anymore, you rest for as many seconds as you have reps left (so 60 reps done means 40 seconds of rest before trying again to complete the last 40 reps). His theory, was once you could do a 5 pound curl 100 times, now do it on a bosu ball on the rounded side. Now do it on a bosu ball on the flat side balancing, now do it one legged on the ground, then bosu ball upgrades. The idea being the heavy month was building the big, functional muscles, the 100 month was making the fast twitch and stability muscles do their work and grow. And then because you're switching every 4 weeks, and well below the 6 week body adjustment period, you never really hit plateau's and always had good gains. Now absolutely this doesn't build huge size or huge strength quickly (or maybe ever), but as a functional, not just looking big but being able to move well, what's your thoughts?
@@johnvonromero6699you need both. Machines are absolutely superior for individual isometric muscle growth, BUT, if you only use machines, you don’t build stability and are more prone to injury after you build real muscle. I think 70 machine, 30 free weight is probably safe.
Ive been watching a lot of Dr Mike and Jeff Nippard videos. Just in the couple weeks since I've started, i have noticed significant progress. Had to check my ego, but ive been enjoying the results
I love sled pushing, mostly as a last burnout on a leg day, or if I do a functional stuff workout. Both legs, shoulders and triceps. If you want back, tie a long rope to it and do arm over arm rowing, just like the Strongman event, it's great 😊 I also love Farmer's carry, even though Mike would probably dunk that as well 😅

The timing with the app ad keeps getting better 😂 touch and go
One common critique in these videos that I see and disagree on is when Dr Mike says things like they're just actors and don't really need to train for and like the part that they're playing. While its true that they are actors, I as the audience member always appreciate it more when the actor actually looks like and moves like the part they're trying to play. Not just physique wise. Sure you can use stunt doubles and stuff but I think we all appreciate it better when we see a Jackie Chan performing many of his own stunts, or Keanu Reeves showing off his gun skills and martial arts. Hugh Jackman can't actually be Wolverine, but he needs to move like him the best he can. If he's just this bulky ripped guy thats slow and doesn't look like he can fight then I'm either gonna call bs or be less invested.
Jackman actually had a great training routine back in The Wolverine and Days of Future Past days, around 2012-2014. His trainer was David Kingsbury and they worked really well together. Lots of bench press, squats, deadlift and pull-ups.
Why wouldn’t you develop your squats with range of motion through all joints. Ankles included. If you have to wear shoes that give you a different angle to lift the weight better, why wouldn’t you just train lighter pushing full range, deep stretch? “Technique and effort “
Kind of arrogant in this one Dr Mike Stability is a great trait to acquire helps make lifts way more stable. You’re pissing on any alternative training because you know everything
5 หลายเดือนก่อน
@@paraworth You are the arrogant one. Dr. Mike was spot on about stability training.
Stability training is applied to improve stability or in injury rehab/prevention, not to replace a gym bench or any other similar equipment. Otherwise is just charlatanism, which is often seen in gyms when some dupes try to benchpress on a stability ball or some shit like that. That's just plain dangerous. Having that said, dr. Mike has a penchant for mixing scientific info with his personal bias and subjective assumptions. He can't see things from the perspective of a rehabilitation therapist/physiotherapist/etc. Instead, he just dismisses these elements altogether. "Sasquatch-no-go-monkey. Pull-up bad. Ooga-booga..."
12:31 my PT showed me a clip of a guy trying to do dumbbell presses while stabilizing his back on a bosu ball. The ball popped and he dropped the dumbbells (I think they were like 80s) directly onto his forearms, shattering both of em. It’s a perfect video to demonstrate why an exercise being different and unique doesn’t mean it’s better.
Hey Mike are you able to make a more detailed periodisation programming guide for Jiujitsu? I’ve been following the basic one you have on bjj fanatics and now I want more 😍😍
And Bosu Ball squats give you stability and core strength allowing you to do stunts and movements pain free. Just don’t expect big legs from them, thats not what they are for.
Not hypertrophic at all, but it can be a good knee joint bulletproofing exercise. At higher volumes. The point is, that's not what Jackman is training for.
@@maxwellerickson7066 bulletproofing a joint is not possible. anyone telling you that you can, their knowledge is immediately suspect (this includes kneesovertoesguy).
Not too long ago, I saw his workout posted within some targeted ad. I immediately commented that "I would love to see Dr. Mike Israetel's critique of this." And here it is. You beautiful man with a skull shaped like a Cretaceous Ceratopsian.
I kind of wonder if this is a similar situation as we had with Ben Affleck where the movie he's known for being really jacked in (Batman v Superman) is not the movie we're seeing his training program for (Justice League). The screenshot of him from the intro is him in The Wolverine back in 2013 when he was way bigger (and also ten years younger) than he is now, and I would bet was doing, if perhaps not Dr. Mike approved training, training that Dr. Mike would approve of more and is really the physique people are thinking of when they want to know how Hugh Jackman trains.
I think the trailer he had for Deadpool 3 might’ve been more legit, Beth Lewis. She didn’t post too many videos but had him doing more compound movements and less silly stuff like clapping pushups and bosu ball balancing
@@benreed9952 To be honest I lost my confidence in Dr Mike with the way they misrepresent these people's training. Hugh's trained for this role for 25 years, there's masses of videos of him doing traditional weight training. Editing together a version that makes him look like a dick, I just don't think is cool. In saying that, I love Hugh Jackman and I've admired his physique for quite some time. I really wished I didn't watch this particular video because it genuinely made me sad seeing one of my heros get ridiculed.
I've never used a bosu (spelling?) ball but I do value balance training in the gym. Balance training is a MUST for me as I get older - after heart attacks and cancer, falling over is pretty much the next most common thing that will shorten and destroy your quality of life. Because I'm lazy and want to save time I do most of my dumbell work whilst standing on a balance board.
As a 55 year old retired Marine who still spend 2 hours a day in the gym I can attest to the truth in the song "I ain't as good as I once was, but I am as good once, as I ever was" I am still as strong as I have ever been, but I pay for it the next day dearly, and the endurance certainly take a hit with age. Recovery is just harder these days. Still better than the alternative of doing nothing; for me at least.
To defend the bosu ball... I used it for physical therapy and to retrain my muscles for balance. I've super weak so it was also used to help me learn to do proper squats as well. Now they make great chairs. Only good for therapy, recovery and weaklings like me.
I'm convinced these Hollywood actor workout videos are purely promo for their movie and to keep their actual routine (juice) a secret. Idk, I feel like there's a conspiracy somewhere.
Im sure theyre largely bs to sell the movie. Realistically, no one really wants to see a celebrity training video where they essentially just show an overview of how any normal person would train for muscle size.
I read an article about his train and it's was not like in the video. Basically, he did 4 series of 5 or 3 reps, but there is a catch he increased the weight for each rep and keep the 3th and 4th the same. Another catch is the next week of the train he supposed to do the exercises with more weight than the last time but fewer reps. The fourth week, he rests doing train with 12-15 reps and not too much weight. I remember the train because I copied it and it really worked for a while.

Love the information. I'm 47 and looking to lose around 100 Lbs. I've been hearing a lot of info about how I should be taking collagen to help (especially with elasticity) in toning that loose skin once the weight is lost. Any chance of a video about things like this?
I normally perform my deadlift with controlled motion, touching the plates to the ground for a few seconds before ascending. There are times I just deadlift for fun, not for hypertrophy. these times I usually go very heavy and do the touch and go.
Adamanitum notes: Logan's bones are "laced" with adamantium. They are actually just normal bones. His mutant power is a ridiculousjly enhanced healing factor which allows him to be almost unkillable. He also has heightened senses (smell, taste, etc), above average speed, stamina, etc. He is also about 5''3 and canadian. Hence "wolverine" (small, canadian, ferocious).
Hearing you describe the difficulties of taller, skinnier lifters with the squat and bench press was interesting. What kind of exercises would you recommend to make up for those weak points? I'm a taller beginner; certainly not skinny but definitely under-muscled for my size, and attempting barbell training (with the exception of the deadlift) has always overtaxed me with little to show for it.
You mentioned tall folks with short torso being awesome at deadlift, and bad at bench. What about people who are tall with exceptionally long torso? What would you be especially good and bad at, if you are 6'3" with disproportionately long torso and shorter limbs?
I was a “bounce and go” guy with my deadlift. Now I touch down softly, no bounce, and go up pretty quickly. So I’m not a full stop and start, but I don’t let the weights bounce and help me. It’s not perfect, but it’s not the worst.

Mad respect for Dr. Mike for being honest and straightforward with the facts. Saw another popular TH-camr do this format and he was basically saying “everything this person did is both perfect and beautiful.”
Who was that so I may access their assessment?
Not really when it's only including sillier stuff they went back 20 years to find. Jackman has prepped for Wolverine 10 times now, picking out the stuff before he learned to train is just feeding the algorithm.

Hollywood training / progress = stereoids
With their training, it has to be a lot of the ol' magic powders and pills. If they trained halfway decent, theyd look like Dr. Mike / Jared
Really it should be progress/Hollywood training = steroids since BS Hollywood training needs to be multiplied by steroids to equal any meaningful progress

It took only a day for this to become my new favourite channel. You're a heck of a megadude Doctorm.
Imho
Oh, and don't forget the lighting and make-up artist that help fill in the definition.
Seeing Dr Mike gets my claw as hard as adamantium every time
Hawt! 😍
Nothing beats the hardwork and results of free weights.
Except for machines
@@johnvonromero6699 Scientifically proven machines have no benefit over free weights.
Dr. Mike also spoke on this as well.
@@johnvonromero6699you need both.
Machines are absolutely superior for individual isometric muscle growth, BUT, if you only use machines, you don’t build stability and are more prone to injury after you build real muscle.
I think 70 machine, 30 free weight is probably safe.
Your editors are very slick 😂

Yep which made the high clapping pullups impressive. Maybe he doesn't want to be just all show
Love the ad transition in this episode. Well done.
I'm sure Hugh Jackman had Cancer several times and this could possibly be why his exercise routine isn't vigorous and is low weight
Jackman actually had a great training routine back in The Wolverine and Days of Future Past days, around 2012-2014. His trainer was David Kingsbury and they worked really well together. Lots of bench press, squats, deadlift and pull-ups.
yeah there was a big difference between his X2 X3 body and the DOFP body. His back was twice as wide and twice as thick in the DOFP.
Why wouldn’t you develop your squats with range of motion through all joints. Ankles included. If you have to wear shoes that give you a different angle to lift the weight better, why wouldn’t you just train lighter pushing full range, deep stretch? “Technique and effort “
Kind of arrogant in this one Dr Mike
Stability is a great trait to acquire helps make lifts way more stable. You’re pissing on any alternative training because you know everything
@@paraworth You are the arrogant one. Dr. Mike was spot on about stability training.
Stability training is applied to improve stability or in injury rehab/prevention, not to
replace a gym bench or any other similar equipment. Otherwise is just charlatanism,
which is often seen in gyms when some dupes try to benchpress on a stability ball or
some shit like that. That's just plain dangerous.
Having that said, dr. Mike has a penchant for mixing scientific info with his personal
bias and subjective assumptions. He can't see things from the perspective of a
rehabilitation therapist/physiotherapist/etc. Instead, he just dismisses these elements
altogether. "Sasquatch-no-go-monkey. Pull-up bad. Ooga-booga..."
I really want an RP hoodie or shirt ! Any chance this is in the future, Dr. Mike?
Dr. Mike and team got me rolling
Yeah these are great tips but where can I get some adamantium in my body?
Adamantium gives you cancer. Don't believe big mutant!
Weapon X will do that for you bro
12:31 my PT showed me a clip of a guy trying to do dumbbell presses while stabilizing his back on a bosu ball. The ball popped and he dropped the dumbbells (I think they were like 80s) directly onto his forearms, shattering both of em. It’s a perfect video to demonstrate why an exercise being different and unique doesn’t mean it’s better.
Editors are GOATED!!!
Hey Mike are you able to make a more detailed periodisation programming guide for Jiujitsu?
I’ve been following the basic one you have on bjj fanatics and now I want more 😍😍
Sled pushing is strengthening ankle, knee and hips for old mutants to do cardio.
I think kneesovertoesguy has really popularised the sled thing, and doing things backwards
so are squats? except you actually get range of motion from squats lol
Smoothest app plug transition to date.
Didn't expect you to not mention the s word the entire video. This was a real critique. Hats off to you.
Aye, not much point critiquing training as being old fashioned when the videos are decades old.
@@jaxr2958 exactly! This time he was training with someone who appeared to be more of a legit strength coach rather than a flashy celeb trainer
But mostly it's takes away my trust in his advice.
@@jaxr2958 same, for some other reasons, he’s made some comments about other fitness TH-camrs that are straight up not true and genuinely weird. Not sure if the team is trying to play into drama or not but it comes off as childish for a team that also wants to be seen as an authority

I really wished I didn't watch this particular video because it genuinely made me sad seeing one of my heros get ridiculed.
9:26 I like how he hits us with that invincible style cut
I've never used a bosu (spelling?) ball but I do value balance training in the gym. Balance training is a MUST for me as I get older - after heart attacks and cancer, falling over is pretty much the next most common thing that will shorten and destroy your quality of life.
Because I'm lazy and want to save time I do most of my dumbell work whilst standing on a balance board.
Better CGI claws then X-Men Origins: Wolverine 😏
As a 55 year old retired Marine who still spend 2 hours a day in the gym I can attest to the truth in the song "I ain't as good as I once was, but I am as good once, as I ever was"
I am still as strong as I have ever been, but I pay for it the next day dearly, and the endurance certainly take a hit with age. Recovery is just harder these days. Still better than the alternative of doing nothing; for me at least.
Thanks Doc.
Doing pushups on those pushup arch things are a really good tool
I am patiently waiting your review of Jake Gyllanhaal’s idiotic roadhouse training.

I do not care about working out…yet a clicked immediately. I’ve learned more about working out from Dr. Mike then I ever thought I would know.
To defend the bosu ball... I used it for physical therapy and to retrain my muscles for balance. I've super weak so it was also used to help me learn to do proper squats as well. Now they make great chairs. Only good for therapy, recovery and weaklings like me.
The bosu ball is for sitting on between sets
Or kick if you come up short in a set
Please do one on Alan Ritchson's exercise
@@aldogracas5414 his original X-Men and Wolverine Origin workouts because the routine every major actor would chase after because of how effective his actual routine in

3:20 I have never seen clapping pull-ups before. I'm impressed as someone who struggles with one normal pull-up.
Love the information. I'm 47 and looking to lose around 100 Lbs. I've been hearing a lot of info about how I should be taking collagen to help (especially with elasticity) in toning that loose skin once the weight is lost. Any chance of a video about things like this?
Snikt❌ Slink✔️
"exercise scientist react " in the title is annoying as fuck.
Feel small little man?
I’m up for the challenge Dr Mike…
I propose the BOSU Ball is a good way to do full ROM situps, providing a deep stretch on the abs.

hollywood celebs have big pecs and tiny arms. how are they getting such amazing pec isolation?
2:54 suddenly AC/DC's song makes a lot more sense.
That was a helluva smooth transition to the app plug.
Sir you’re a national treasure. And I’m a gymrat that loves me some comic book heroes. 💪 thanks for keepin it real
The excercices shown in the videos were not for getting jacked, but for roles, like his dancing theater roles for which he needs ballance.
However you want to cut it - Jackman got fucking jacked...
I think the first exercise he was doing was just basically warming up. I do that to warm up before pressing something heavier
You should do Sit and Be Fit next
Question: Are clapping pull-ups good for explosive power?
And if not, what type of plyometric push up will give you explosive power?
I'm willing to bet the idea behind the kettlebell through the legs was to stimulate muscles that help with balance
Dr. Mike is the manifestation of bro science.
