  • Sky News host Rita Panahi reacts to an “entitled” TikToker who complained about her college degree not immediately resulting in a six-figure salary.
Alison Johnson from Huntsville, Alabama began her TikTok rant by saying she has a “bone to pick” with America.
“People say, ‘get your degree’ but then they don’t talk about how you need experience,” she told viewers in a video filmed inside her car.
    “The degree was the experience.”
Ms Panahi said the woman seemed to think a college degree means you do not need any sort of work experience.

The 25 year old grad is incredibly immature.
My daughter, now 25, graduated in 2020 at 22 with an undergraduate marketing degree from a medium sized state college in the Midwest. 3.1 GPA so she was solid but definitely not a superstar as far as her GPA went. She spent her 4 years in college doing Division 1 athletics, serving on student government, a few volunteer service projects, and she had two summer internships. She put big time and effort into pursuing those extracurriculars.
She was very well rounded and personable with an amazing work ethic.
She put on a business suit and showed up at the business school job fair every year starting freshman year and learned how to shake hands and talk to recruiters face to face. Senior year she accepted an offer from a Fortune 500 company that she met at that annual job fair.
She was off and running with that first job and has continued to build her career with a couple of promotions behind her already. She continues to live with roommates even after college because she knows it will be a little longer before her salary hits the six figures mark but she will get there!
The degree is only one part of getting into the job force - you have to create ways to get experience in soft skills as well. For many fields your GPA is not that important- work ethic, personality and MATURITY however are everything!

Believe me, being a student isn’t the same thing a# being an independent nurse…it takes years to become a good nurse. There should be a minimum number of years of experience required before you are allowed to teach. The teacher I’m talking to never nursed, even when her instructor job was over. The girl who was belly aching in her nice-looking car, drinking her 6 dollars Starbucks coffee is just blows up my mind!!! Where does this little spoiled brat get the idea that just because she has a college degree, she will automatically make top money after graduation? How can you go to college and not know that the only thing a college degree will do for you is that you will not be the person cleaning the toilets of you job. It is actually scary to see the young people being so entitled and act like society owes them. This is really insane!!!

When college degrees were "rare", they were worth a lot more. One could graduate college with a degree (or, gasp - a double major!) and expect to be more desirable to a potential employer than someone who didn't have a degree. Now, a degree is almost the norm. I know a lot of college graduates (of all ages) that are working at jobs utilizing far less than their potential. When I see someone with a degree nowadays, all that tells me is that they've been indoctrinated into the leftist agenda. The things being taught in colleges today is FAR more political than academic. Prove me wrong.

After I graduated I started at the bottom. I worked for three companies for the next 40+ years and I only changed companies when my area was outsourced the first time and then the next time my area was spun off into a new company. During all that time I worked overtime, off shifts and crazy hours. I endured some rough bosses but mostly good bosses. Now, after paying my dues and working hard, suffering long commutes, often in bad, snowy weather I am looking forward to retiring soon. Life is hard and our colleges are not preparing the kids today. Also, I have two sons and both are working and both also took entry level jobs and are working their way up. Both have college degrees.

The fact that a college degree doesn't count as experience, shows how useless many of the courses are. With that in mind, it does make it hard to get hired where even entry level jobs where the college degree isn't really needed, but they require it anyway, will still want 1-3 years experience working in that position. In cases like that, the person is in a catch 22 situation where someone can get a degree, then in their town or city, find that every job listing that matches their degree, wants one or more years experience.
I guess it works as a filter to block a woke evil generation of graduates from ruining a company, but for those who managed to keep their sanity, they become collateral damage.

At one point, an engineering degree from a decent school that had ABET accredited programs was necessary to sit for the EIT exam (now FE). A much more difficult degree than marketing was nothing more than the key to open the door for a test which upon passing allowed you to officially begin as an Engineer in Training (of course there were other paths to the EIT and PE exams, but that was the streamlined version). Not that hard to believe that college is not experience (some exceptions related to industry research).
