Lots of Sanding with Sandy! When you have the log in the bucket and thumb, bring the main boom in to full in keeping the log low to the ground so the maim boom is full in. By doing that you have the best set up to move a heavy log.
Thank you Sandy for posting this video! I just bought the same attachment to my mini excavator, went online to check if there was an instructional video on how to mount it and yours came up first. I bought the hydraulic version, but I think the manual would have been perfectly good enough. For the extra 300 US dollars I only got the hydraulic cylinder and two hydraulic lines, plus the quick connect fittings which of course aren't compatible with my excavators couplings. So I will have to invest another few bucks to get the right fittings and it looks like I will have to reroute the existing lines for the third function, with some t-connections and maybe change the lines that came with the thumb to shorter lengths and of more flexible material. So right now it doesn't seem worth the extra investment when the manual thumb does the job. I'm thinking about converting mine to manual as well, for that I only need the third supporting plate, which I hopefully can manufacture myself from a piece of scrap metal. Thanks again for your great videos! With the help of this one I feel more confident that I will be able to mount it on my machine.
A thumb is definitely useful. I have one on my backhoe and as a tie in to one of your previous videos on saving your back. Use the mini ex to lift the logs to a point that you can just cut at waist level. No bending over!
Tuck the log in as close to the blade as possible. It will handle the log better. I know, you’ll figure it out. I just can’t help it. Ive run those little machines for years so learned a lot. 😁
Mornin Sandy! Adding a thumb is worth the cost and installation! You will find it VERY useful clearing brush from pathways, when it gets a little tight with the tractor! Only time I get a good chuckle was your big smile, a thumbs up..... then the log dropped off, lol! Keeping the first log barely off the ground, I'm surprised you didn't try to swing to the side (slowly) to see how it handled the weight off the side to the without tipping! hahah the log falling was a good reminder to me to not go near my splitter with it yet. I was a bit scared of the log on the bucket so will have to try swinging around a bit off camera before hand haha. Merry Christmas Bruce!
Hi Sandy my name is Bill. I live in Australia originally from Scotland. I was so amazed to see you have a machine exactly the same as mine. I also have put a thumb on it. What I did do is weld a chain to the rear and add some counterweights has enabled me to lift slightly heavier things because these little machines have so much power one thing to be careful of something heavy and swing around it is liable to be very careful of that. Best addition you can add. Suggestion: Get as close to what you are going to pick up and keep it close to the machine. This will help balance and lessen chance of tipping over. Merry Christmas.

Been dreaming of a thumb on my old greasy backhoes for years, I'll do one some day but there are enough other things to do first sadly. They are worth every penny and then some though!!! Got hooked on them with rented excavators!

I like that you comment on the videos about the small and easy to forget mistakes that we all do. Like welding with current passing pins and bearings, not covering cylinders. I recently welded something on the roof of my tractor and forgot to cover the windshield, making a nice long spatter in the middle of the window SMH.
i am pretty sure eventually you will find all kind of useful things to do with it but wait till you do some road cleaning or making a road you will find that thumb very helpful have a great holiday

I figured that was what you were getting from last video. The thumb will be a time saver, and back saver like you mentioned. Could you mount some weight on back of the machine to help with the balance? My thoughts when you welded on the thumb, is that I would have maybe went a little higher on the beam for more of a cradle pinch on the log. But I'm not there to see how it handles. It looks fine have fun and be safe playing.

@@sawingwithsandy make a barrel like you did for the tractor, Just kidding, that would limit your spin ability in tight places, flat tractor weights are the way to go.and yes you need some weight. Eat up that would help too
As I've said before, I'm not going to be an arm chair mechanic critic and tell you "you shoulda done it this way or that way". Even when it's constructive criticism from the peanut gallery, it just comes off badly. You caught your own mistakes anyway and you'll hear all about all the other things that you shoulda done differently from the know-it-alls. I pitted the hell out of my F350 passenger mirror welding on the dump body so I'm not one to talk! I'll just enjoy watching you do the things that I also like to do with my free time. I will say, however, having infinite thumb adjustment within it's arc and then getting that darned thing out of the way quick and easy with a hydraulic cylinder is awesome. That'll be a welcomed upgrade! You'll agree when you do it. Breaks over! Back to work! Happy Holidays, my friend!

Looks like you may need to drill another set of holes for the upper pin so that you can drop the thumb down a bit more. Looks good and you will love it. Really watch where you ground your welder. You caught it.
When lifting a heavy load with an excavator keep the push blade down like you had and keep the load as close to the excavator as you can. Its all about the laws of physics. Remember lifting without the blade in front (over the tracks) will make the machine very tipee and the further your stick is out will also cause the same effect. You will see the more you use it. I have both for doing what you do a tractor and 4 ton MINI excavator and the tractor can be much faster with my homemade hydraulic grapple. Great video.
I have a manual thumb on my backhoe. Originally I thought I was going to want hydraulic but I'm glad I didn't spend the money. Manual thumbs are quite sufficient.
Gotta have a thumb for sure.you'll love it.makes all the difference in the machine .haven't recieved my lazer for my saw yet.hopefully soon.that machine will keep you standing up while cutting n save alot on your back.most of the time you can reach out n put the thumb against the log then curl the bucket,blade down,bring it all the way in,lift it up then raise the blade n move.just need to remember those moves all the time.good luck.

Nice job picking those heavy logs up Sandy. Practice makes perfect as they say. You def have a ballast issue with larger timber. I wonder if you could weld a flat steel bracket of some sort on the back end of the excavator so you could hang suitcase weights off the rear? Just thinking out loud again, haha. Well Done Sandy.. I'm surprised that Thumb did not have an adjustable center section, The one I have on My Kioti is adjustable which lets it work just like a thumb & finger to pick something up. Someday I'll add the hydraulic Cylinder which can be added to it, Just remove the center section. That will sure save on Chains to keep them out of the Dirt LOL... Mike M.

If you can track down a manual, it will show lifting capacities at various distances from the machine. If you need to pick up something heavy, just get close to it and keep it tight to the machine like you mentioned.
watch the clamping pressure when vacant. I cracked my bucket closing the bucket with nothing in the jaws. The bucket can exert a tremendous amount of pressure on that center tooth. I have mine on a Caterpillar 416 backhoe.
Awesome and congrats. Practice makes perfect. Yes , get that load as close to you as posable . Your really going to want a Hydraulic Thumb. Especially sense your auxiliary lines are right there. Keep on keepin on. Your gonna freakin love that machine. I use mine to log with, Cut the logs and put the really big rounds on the spliiter. Nice job.
I have the same thumb on my tb015 but my 18" bucket has 4 teeth. I modified it by spreading out the end like a Y so the bucket teeth will fit up through the thumb ends. If I had 3 teeth like yours I wouldn't have had to. For the side cutters, just shorten them and sharpen them up some they'll help grab logs that are a little smaller Looks good, nice work.
@@stevehildreth1934 looks that way. But hydraulic thumbs do have a few disadvantages. They must be set with relief pressure lower than the bucket cylinder so they will give if you clamp,something very hard. That way you won't bend the thumb cylinder if they're fighting each other. Also you can't really push extra heavy stuff with them because of that same relief pressure. With a fixed thumb you can push stuff around because it's a strong triangle, you can also clamp down with the bucket as hard as you want without it moving ormworryingnabout bending a cylinder
@Steve those are hydraulic aux lines on the boom but unfortunately they are hooked to a one way valve for a breaker whereas I need a two-way valve for the thumb
Hey Rob. I believe that the hoses are hooked to my one way valve for a breaker attachment but I’d need a two way valve to run a thumb. Atleast that’s what I think it is. I may be wrong though
A long post here but I have some findings re thumbs worth sharing. Recently I bought an old Kobelco excavator for my new sawmill. I'm not very good at operating my excavator either lol. I'm contemplating a thumb also, but in my research about which way to go I have discovered some things from speaking to 3 excavator operators. So the guy who sold it to me is one of the 3 operators and suggested a manual thumb like yours. They have a lot of advantages for the sawmiller ie simple, no hydraulic hoses to tear off. The downside, no thumb movement and you have to take it off and put it on if you want to use your excavator for other tasks. Point of this discussion is this, the two other operators mentioned to me that if I decide to go hydraulic thumb at least consider a PROGRESSIVE LINK (PL) type over a non PL type. The PL thumb puts the thumb on the same pivot pin as the bucket which is highly desirable as the thumb movement is now only limited by the thumb ram extension range and not the hitch meaning a greater range of rotation of the thumb. The range of movement of the *non* PG hydraulic thumb, is limited by the bucket hitch, so can never extend past the same plane as the underside of the excavator stick where the thumb pivot pin is welded to. The PL thumb can rotate almost up to the same angle as bucket up position, albeit with a gap. So, with a non PL hydraulic thumb you can retract it and it is always on and ready to use but its movement is limited. PL solves the limited thumb travel issue however the cost. You'll have to have one made to your specific application and this might make the cost north of $5000. Also there is the cost of rebushing the entire hitch at the same time as you can't really fit a new PG thumb to the bucket pivot point when the bushes are old since the existing pin has to be replaced with a longer one. This rebushing of the links and stick ain't cheap however once done it is an investment I guess. There is another way, you could just get a hydraulic grapple but they're less convenient but still could be a worthwhile option. Apparently a PG thumb is a game changer particularly for cleaning up. I wouldn't know at this point however but I think I'm going to go this route but will have to wait until I save some more money since I have to rebush the hitch and have the aux hydraulics added.
You can tack weld that up with a 6013 electrode but I would use a Low Hydrogen 7018 to do the actual welding. Would have pulled the boom in to keep the weld horizontal/flat as possible. Vertical up with a 7018 requires a different angle and motion so yes I could tell you are not a professional...but by watching a few video's on using that Low Hydrogen rod vertical up you will be good to go... your set up and precautions show you have the skills sets. Good Job!
A learning curve on the running the mini-ex for sure. If you could figure a way to put some weight on the back of the machine it would make it more stable. Turning will be a problem with a log hanging very far from the machine. I don't know that I would be brave enough to video myself learning to use a machine like that. I have a sub compact that I put manual thum onbackhoe and a ht10b I put a hydraulic thum. Bought both off ebay both were manual for about 160.00. I do like the hydraulic more. Wish it close up a little more then it does. They both do work. I use a 100amp mig to weld everything. It's slow but work for the price I paid for it. With that thum I think you are going to need more holes so the thum will go further down
Sandy, I have an excavator (with a thumb) and a sawmill - they make a great pair! You will find all sorts of things that the backhoe will come in handy for. I'll make one suggestion - save the extra lengths that you cut off and weld them to the sides of the remaining thumb arms. That extra long last tooth on the part you cut off, even though it probably is only a 1/2 longer than the other teeth, will make a huge difference in whether a log slips out of your grip!
Was using my mini the other day and came to the conclusion that I need to add some type of removable racks i can attach to the blade where I can rest logs on when I am moving just something I am working on for added support
I got a Hydralic thumb a month ago and put it on my trailer trencher. No hydraulics for the thumb as of yet, it will cost more for that than the thumb itself. You can get a ram the size of your brace and use the existing thumb.
For your usage, that thumb is 100% a necessity!!! There is no way to become fluid with your machine other than practice, practice, and more practice, but it will come, trust me!!!
Thumbs tend to get in the way if you are primarily digging because when you reach out near your capacity those suddenly become a major obstacle. But for logs and brush they rule. With a larger ex and a hyd thumb I can throw logs and rocks after getting some side swing going and hitting the thumb release. So cool to see a log flying through the air. But it saves a lot of time...if you're pressed for time! You could add some counter-weights on the back to help with the tippyness. It will get much worse when you swing and suddenly your blade becomes pointless, and that's where several hundred lbs of steel could help (or more).
I've seen those big machines throw things and sure is impressive! I like the idea with the weights. Like you said, the sideways motion will make for some issues without them
Sandy I just want to tell u that when wielding put ground as close to area wielding as possible! because I've seen pins and pivot points get gaulded or froze up from the Ark. Going through the joints
If you want to improve the look of your weld beads, 7018 works amazingly well overhead. Don't worry, you don't need to get your head down under the puddle. You put the puddle on the bottom of the work. It'll penetrate well, and lay amazingly flat. (Depending upon your current, and temp of material, of course.) I've never run it, but 7024 is optimized for flat.
Maybe weld those longer teeth that were at the end of the thumb, back on over the last teeth on the thumb now, so it'll keep stuff from rolling out and trap the log? I'm not a fabricator but it might hold better.
👍Any day you can make a tool more useful is a good day 👍 with practice you'll get better. Should have seen me the first day on a wheel loader. Wasn't pretty. 👍👍👍👍
Sandy how much are those worth in that condition? Im in 306 sask. Some seem pretty pricey. Used snd older seems like the way to go. How many Hp is your machine. I saw another video he extended his plow blade out a bit further to give him more stability
Brilliant Sandy you need to build a chainsaw holder on to the Excavator and you can pick up trees and saw them to size so much safer, I would have left a few more inches on the thumb, also when you are travelling with a tree get the tree tucked in as close to the machine so it is better balanced and easier to travel with but you now have the best machine to work with, but do not take it to far into the woods.
Chainsaw holder is a must for sure! I may end up making some longer teeth and weld them back onto the thumb depending on how things go here. I appreciate the tips as well Jim.
When you are moving if you swing your boom around to the side of your tracks your machine won't buck as bad. You would still have to have your boom close in not extended
You should hang the bucket straight down and check the length again. It may come up short because of the hinge point. You can reach out and pinch things that way. Too late I know. It just makes it nicer for the close up grabs as it doesn’t have to lift the log up to pinch it.
Looks good Sandy. That vertical welding is a b! tch for us " farmer" welders. I've never gotten good at it. You'll get on to the operation of the new machine quickly. I just bought a mini skid steer. Dang things is like a carnival ride right now. It'll take awhile to get on to as well. Think I'm gonna put a grapple on it tho.
That’s the truth for me as well. I’m a rookie welder at best. Learning as I go. I’m just happy I can get some strong welds down but sure not the prettiest haha
Yupper, always need to have the blade down or close in. It is very disconcerting when you equipment rocks. Used to use a large reach lift, I had to remember to use the Jacks when I raised the 1100 +chemical totes to the nozzles.
Hope you see this post. The thumb appears to form a 45-45-90 triangle with the welded side called 'a', the thumb side 'b' and the hypotenuse 'c'. I would hope they designed is so that one set of holes on side 'a' is the same distance apart as the holes on side 'b'. I saw on a future video where you were digging the holes for the posts along side your log building you took off sides 'b' and 'c' so you could use the bucket. IF the holes line up you would only have to remove the 'b', 'c' pin (putting the pin back in 'c') and folding 'c' up vertically. Then pivot side 'b' also vertical, remove pin 'a', 'c' then seat side 'b' fully vertical, align all three pieces and reinstall the pin through all three pieces. Side 'c' would stay in place with the entire thumb up and out of the way of the bucket keeping all parts together. Maybe glue a thin rubber bumper on the flat side of 'c' so it doesn't bump against the bucket arm would also be a plus.

I like that you comment on the videos about the small and easy to forget mistakes that we all do. Like welding with current passing pins and bearings, not covering cylinders. I recently welded something on the roof of my tractor and forgot to cover the windshield, making a nice long spatter in the middle of the window SMH.
Always happy to share the ups and downs of my projects. I find it may help others if they're doing the same project to not make my mistakes.
i am pretty sure eventually you will find all kind of useful things to do with it but wait till you do some road cleaning or making a road you will find that thumb very helpful have a great holiday

I figured that was what you were getting from last video. The thumb will be a time saver, and back saver like you mentioned. Could you mount some weight on back of the machine to help with the balance? My thoughts when you welded on the thumb, is that I would have maybe went a little higher on the beam for more of a cradle pinch on the log. But I'm not there to see how it handles. It looks fine have fun and be safe playing.

As I've said before, I'm not going to be an arm chair mechanic critic and tell you "you shoulda done it this way or that way". Even when it's constructive criticism from the peanut gallery, it just comes off badly.
You caught your own mistakes anyway and you'll hear all about all the other things that you shoulda done differently from the know-it-alls.
I pitted the hell out of my F350 passenger mirror welding on the dump body so I'm not one to talk!
I'll just enjoy watching you do the things that I also like to do with my free time.
I will say, however, having infinite thumb adjustment within it's arc and then getting that darned thing out of the way quick and easy with a hydraulic cylinder is awesome. That'll be a welcomed upgrade! You'll agree when you do it.

When lifting a heavy load with an excavator keep the push blade down like you had and keep the load as close to the excavator as you can. Its all about the laws of physics. Remember lifting without the blade in front (over the tracks) will make the machine very tipee and the further your stick is out will also cause the same effect. You will see the more you use it. I have both for doing what you do a tractor and 4 ton MINI excavator and the tractor can be much faster with my homemade hydraulic grapple. Great video.
I have a manual thumb on my backhoe. Originally I thought I was going to want hydraulic but I'm glad I didn't spend the money. Manual thumbs are quite sufficient.

Gotta have a thumb for sure.you'll love it.makes all the difference in the machine .haven't recieved my lazer for my saw yet.hopefully soon.that machine will keep you standing up while cutting n save alot on your back.most of the time you can reach out n put the thumb against the log then curl the bucket,blade down,bring it all the way in,lift it up then raise the blade n move.just need to remember those moves all the time.good luck.

Nice job picking those heavy logs up Sandy. Practice makes perfect as they say. You def have a ballast issue with larger timber. I wonder if you could weld a flat steel bracket of some sort on the back end of the excavator so you could hang suitcase weights off the rear? Just thinking out loud again, haha. Well Done Sandy.. I'm surprised that Thumb did not have an adjustable center section, The one I have on My Kioti is adjustable which lets it work just like a thumb & finger to pick something up. Someday I'll add the hydraulic Cylinder which can be added to it, Just remove the center section.
That will sure save on Chains to keep them out of the Dirt LOL...

If you can track down a manual, it will show lifting capacities at various distances from the machine. If you need to pick up something heavy, just get close to it and keep it tight to the machine like you mentioned.
I think that's something I"ll need to keep in mind for the future. For many of these I was way too far out I think when trying to lift

watch the clamping pressure when vacant. I cracked my bucket closing the bucket with nothing in the jaws. The bucket can exert a tremendous amount of pressure on that center tooth.
I have mine on a Caterpillar 416 backhoe.

I have the same thumb on my tb015 but my 18" bucket has 4 teeth. I modified it by spreading out the end like a Y so the bucket teeth will fit up through the thumb ends. If I had 3 teeth like yours I wouldn't have had to.
For the side cutters, just shorten them and sharpen them up some they'll help grab logs that are a little smaller

@@stevehildreth1934 looks that way. But hydraulic thumbs do have a few disadvantages. They must be set with relief pressure lower than the bucket cylinder so they will give if you clamp,something very hard. That way you won't bend the thumb cylinder if they're fighting each other.
Also you can't really push extra heavy stuff with them because of that same relief pressure.
With a fixed thumb you can push stuff around because it's a strong triangle, you can also clamp down with the bucket as hard as you want without it moving ormworryingnabout bending a cylinder

@Steve those are hydraulic aux lines on the boom but unfortunately they are hooked to a one way valve for a breaker whereas I need a two-way valve for the thumb

A long post here but I have some findings re thumbs worth sharing.
Recently I bought an old Kobelco excavator for my new sawmill. I'm not very good at operating my excavator either lol.
I'm contemplating a thumb also, but in my research about which way to go I have discovered some things from speaking to 3 excavator operators.
So the guy who sold it to me is one of the 3 operators and suggested a manual thumb like yours. They have a lot of advantages for the sawmiller ie simple, no hydraulic hoses to tear off. The downside, no thumb movement and you have to take it off and put it on if you want to use your excavator for other tasks.
Point of this discussion is this, the two other operators mentioned to me that if I decide to go hydraulic thumb at least consider a PROGRESSIVE LINK (PL) type over a non PL type.
The PL thumb puts the thumb on the same pivot pin as the bucket which is highly desirable as the thumb movement is now only limited by the thumb ram extension range and not the hitch meaning a greater range of rotation of the thumb.
The range of movement of the *non* PG hydraulic thumb, is limited by the bucket hitch, so can never extend past the same plane as the underside of the excavator stick where the thumb pivot pin is welded to.
The PL thumb can rotate almost up to the same angle as bucket up position, albeit with a gap.
So, with a non PL hydraulic thumb you can retract it and it is always on and ready to use but its movement is limited.
PL solves the limited thumb travel issue however the cost. You'll have to have one made to your specific application and this might make the cost north of $5000. Also there is the cost of rebushing the entire hitch at the same time as you can't really fit a new PG thumb to the bucket pivot point when the bushes are old since the existing pin has to be replaced with a longer one. This rebushing of the links and stick ain't cheap however once done it is an investment I guess.
There is another way, you could just get a hydraulic grapple but they're less convenient but still could be a worthwhile option.
Apparently a PG thumb is a game changer particularly for cleaning up. I wouldn't know at this point however but I think I'm going to go this route but will have to wait until I save some more money since I have to rebush the hitch and have the aux hydraulics added.

You can tack weld that up with a 6013 electrode but I would use a Low Hydrogen 7018 to do the actual welding. Would have pulled the boom in to keep the weld horizontal/flat as possible. Vertical up with a 7018 requires a different angle and motion so yes I could tell you are not a professional...but by watching a few video's on using that Low Hydrogen rod vertical up you will be good to go... your set up and precautions show you have the skills sets. Good Job!

A learning curve on the running the mini-ex for sure. If you could figure a way to put some weight on the back of the machine it would make it more stable. Turning will be a problem with a log hanging very far from the machine. I don't know that I would be brave enough to video myself learning to use a machine like that.

I have a sub compact that I put manual thum onbackhoe and a ht10b I put a hydraulic thum. Bought both off ebay both were manual for about 160.00. I do like the hydraulic more. Wish it close up a little more then it does. They both do work. I use a 100amp mig to weld everything. It's slow but work for the price I paid for it.
With that thum I think you are going to need more holes so the thum will go further down

Sandy, I have an excavator (with a thumb) and a sawmill - they make a great pair! You will find all sorts of things that the backhoe will come in handy for. I'll make one suggestion - save the extra lengths that you cut off and weld them to the sides of the remaining thumb arms. That extra long last tooth on the part you cut off, even though it probably is only a 1/2 longer than the other teeth, will make a huge difference in whether a log slips out of your grip!

Was using my mini the other day and came to the conclusion that I need to add some type of removable racks i can attach to the blade where I can rest logs on when I am moving just something I am working on for added support

I got a Hydralic thumb a month ago and put it on my trailer trencher. No hydraulics for the thumb as of yet, it will cost more for that than the thumb itself.
You can get a ram the size of your brace and use the existing thumb.
Think that would be a good idea Mike. Sounds like you're machine will be all setup as well once things get hooked up

For your usage, that thumb is 100% a necessity!!! There is no way to become fluid with your machine other than practice, practice, and more practice, but it will come, trust me!!!

Thumbs tend to get in the way if you are primarily digging because when you reach out near your capacity those suddenly become a major obstacle. But for logs and brush they rule. With a larger ex and a hyd thumb I can throw logs and rocks after getting some side swing going and hitting the thumb release. So cool to see a log flying through the air. But it saves a lot of time...if you're pressed for time!
You could add some counter-weights on the back to help with the tippyness. It will get much worse when you swing and suddenly your blade becomes pointless, and that's where several hundred lbs of steel could help (or more).
I've seen those big machines throw things and sure is impressive! I like the idea with the weights. Like you said, the sideways motion will make for some issues without them
Sandy I just want to tell u that when wielding put ground as close to area wielding as possible! because I've seen pins and pivot points get gaulded or froze up from the Ark. Going through the joints

If you want to improve the look of your weld beads, 7018 works amazingly well overhead. Don't worry, you don't need to get your head down under the puddle. You put the puddle on the bottom of the work. It'll penetrate well, and lay amazingly flat. (Depending upon your current, and temp of material, of course.) I've never run it, but 7024 is optimized for flat.

Maybe weld those longer teeth that were at the end of the thumb, back on over the last teeth on the thumb now, so it'll keep stuff from rolling out and trap the log? I'm not a fabricator but it might hold better.

Sandy how much are those worth in that condition? Im in 306 sask. Some seem pretty pricey. Used snd older seems like the way to go. How many Hp is your machine. I saw another video he extended his plow blade out a bit further to give him more stability
Brilliant Sandy you need to build a chainsaw holder on to the Excavator and you can pick up trees and saw them to size so much safer, I would have left a few more inches on the thumb, also when you are travelling with a tree get the tree tucked in as close to the machine so it is better balanced and easier to travel with but you now have the best machine to work with, but do not take it to far into the woods.
Chainsaw holder is a must for sure! I may end up making some longer teeth and weld them back onto the thumb depending on how things go here. I appreciate the tips as well Jim.
When you are moving if you swing your boom around to the side of your tracks your machine won't buck as bad. You would still have to have your boom close in not extended

You should hang the bucket straight down and check the length again. It may come up short because of the hinge point. You can reach out and pinch things that way. Too late I know. It just makes it nicer for the close up grabs as it doesn’t have to lift the log up to pinch it.

That’s the truth for me as well. I’m a rookie welder at best. Learning as I go. I’m just happy I can get some strong welds down but sure not the prettiest haha

Yupper, always need to have the blade down or close in. It is very disconcerting when you equipment rocks. Used to use a large reach lift, I had to remember to use the Jacks when I raised the 1100 +chemical totes to the nozzles.
That rocking motion sure makes me hold my breathe hah

Hope you see this post. The thumb appears to form a 45-45-90 triangle with the welded side called 'a', the thumb side 'b' and the hypotenuse 'c'. I would hope they designed is so that one set of holes on side 'a' is the same distance apart as the holes on side 'b'. I saw on a future video where you were digging the holes for the posts along side your log building you took off sides 'b' and 'c' so you could use the bucket. IF the holes line up you would only have to remove the 'b', 'c' pin (putting the pin back in 'c') and folding 'c' up vertically. Then pivot side 'b' also vertical, remove pin 'a', 'c' then seat side 'b' fully vertical, align all three pieces and reinstall the pin through all three pieces. Side 'c' would stay in place with the entire thumb up and out of the way of the bucket keeping all parts together. Maybe glue a thin rubber bumper on the flat side of 'c' so it doesn't bump against the bucket arm would also be a plus.
