- Billy Whitehurst was known as the Hardest Man in Football in the 1980's and 1990's.
It was a different era for football, and there were a lot of tough men on the pitch. Billy Whitehurst was known as the Toughest.
Billy was a dangerous footballer , who really did strike fear in to his opposition.
Billy would have illegal Bare Knuckle fights for money , and was involved in numerous bar room brawls.
Unapologetic in his actions, he was a footballer , and a man of a different era.

I'm a Blade from Sheffield Matt, Billy was a hard player, a proper south yorkshireman.
Motivation's hard to find when you turn 50, I'm 56 now, I've grafted hard on the roads and buildings till a few years ago, my body tells me so aswell! Hang in there, when you're down you're learning, growing stronger...even though it dunt feel like it at the time.

I remember watching him playing for Newcastle, great tough player 💪 I remember watching him in a Derby against tge mackems at St James Park. He went in for a challenge with there centre half and absolutely flattened him , the centre half kept away from him the rest of the game , he was like a train brilliant memories 👏

Hi Matt not heard that but it’s possible. Friendly enough Billy and popular landlord but not someone to get on the wrong side of. Heard Billy had a hold of Francis Joseph who had been a bit of a bully at Bramall Lane under Billy arrived. That Wednesday lad who he KO’d is no longer with us sadly. All the best !

Let me tell you a (maybe boring?) little story about Billy, from someone who's been sat next to him in the Tigers players' lounge on numerous occasions. I was driving down Priory Road in Hull in the mid 80's and saw a big bloke on the pavement beside the road running alongside a very young girl (read his daughter) on her first bike, laughing and playing with her as a good dad should. So, let's stop for a moment and also think about Big Bill as a dad, a husband and from every time I had the pleasure of being in his company, an utterly wonderful human being. God bless ya Billy.

Keep well my friend....Billy Whitehurst was a firm fan favourite at Boothferry Park in the day....God he was hard. Stood in the Sotuh stand and heard him tell Mark Lawrenson he was pissing him off and Lawro apologised!
I met him once at a NUFC reunion do whilst outside having a tab. I reminded him that I saw him score in the 8-1 defeat at West Ham. That was a positive way to meet Billy 😀
I remember Billy playing for us (Hull), one of my favourites along with when Marwood use to put crosses on his napper.
But my fondest memory, was the season he put three keepers out in one season 💪.

There's a funny video on TH-cam somewhere, an interview about Billy with his oft-called-upon solicitor, the one he'd call when he'd hit someone. The solicitor goes on to say that one time he turned up with a form for Billy to look over and add his signature to. He passed Billy the form and pointed to the bottom where it said sign. Billy wrote Capricorn. I think Billy and Paul Sykes were cut from the same cloth by the sound of it. Sharp-witted and heavy-fisted.

As a Sheffield United fan, I remember Billy against Chelsea, they had a dutch centre half Keith Moncou, 1st minute ball punted up front, they both jump and Billy whacks his elbow in his face, next attack, same thing .. after that Moncou never jumped for a ball.
He had the Cricketers pub at the side of Bramall Lane at one time.

We were both apprentice bricklayers together for Barnsley council..we went to technical college same day for 3 years..he was fine in class but he was always fighting at the weekend somewhere...i never went out with him at night drinking etc but i saw him with black eyes after the weekend..
