The flatmates are based on vampires from different movies: Petyr is old school Nosferatu, Vladislav is the Count from Bram Stoker's Dracula, Viago is from Interview with A Vampire, and Deacon is straight out of The Lost Boys.
I'm sure I won't be the only person to comment this but, the entire movie was improvised. The character of Stu is a real person, (his actual name is Stuart), that was a friend of someone in the movie. Stu was on set and Taika liked him so he put him in the movie, he had no idea when they were filming and Taika told him to just react to the situations however you would normally.
Yeah, he's Taika's friend. He worked on Taika's previous films, went to high school with him and was his flatmate when they made the short film/test footage of this in 2005. He is also the guy who created the cool lighting effect used in that Valkyrie flashback in Thor Ragnarok. Oh and Taika said he set up the Wi-Fi in his mother's house and set up Jemaine's Wi-Fi (they mentioned that at a Q&A for this film to demonstrate how nice and helpful he is). He is an IT guy and the job he described in the movie was really his job.
the "he was on set so they put him in the movie" thing only really applies to the original pilot they did, by the time they filmed this finished product movie he had been involved with it for some time and had taken acting lessons and stuff. so yes, he was a non-actor who was just there to react to stuff originally, but not in this version of the movie. in this version of the movie, he's acting. it's not as good of a story, sure, but it's the truth lol
Real life Stu does actually have a job in IT and developed the tech for the VFX in Thor Ragnorak for the Valkyrie flashback scene where they're descending out of the clouds on Hela.
One of my favourite Taika films, so original and well directed. The comedy is so witty and on point. "What are you bidding on?" "I am bidding on a table"
This film is like a double-negative. The mockumentary style brings a level of realism or practicality to the fantastical mythos of any other vampire movie.
The script in this one is so on point. A lot of quotes that I use on a daily basis now, such as: "Just leave me to do my dark bidding on the internet."
I agree. HOWEVER Fun Fact the entire movie was improvised, and none of the actors even got a script, just pointers from Jemaine (co-director and actor who played Vlad) about how they wanted the scene go
Yeah he’s one of those people where he just knows what his art does and just nails it 10/10. Much love as always from you Brandon! Now it’s time to watch yours to this too hahaha I’ve been saving it
@@JamesVSCinema If you can get access to it, there is a spin-off series of the movie called "Wellington Paranormal", with O'Leary and Minogue (the two officers searching the house). It follows them as they investigate other phenomena around the city. Also recommend the HBO series, as it continues in the same style of comedy and writing, but set in the US. They've also been talking about another movie called "We're Wolves", so hopefully more comes of that, and we can see more of Stu and his pack.
jemaine clement who plays Vladislav actually co directed and co created it! also they had a script but never actually showed it to the cast so it was mostly improv.
Great video that I just found. FYI, The Big Kumara and Boogie Wonderland were both Real Bars in Wellington, New Zealand at the time. Both have since closed down. I cannot confirm if it is because of the vampire murders.
Now here's a fun thing. Taika Waikiki also did Korg. Remember when Korg was suggesting several weapons to Thor to fight with? Like this wooden prong thing that was likely 'only really good if you wanted to fight three vampires huddled together for warmth or something'? ;D
I found this movie on a obscure website years ago and it surprised the hell out of me. I did not think a documentary about vampire roommates would make me rofl.
This movie was pure genious with the mockumentary take on vampires, it really makes you go "why didn't someone think of this sooner? why didn't I think of it?" xD
This is one of my favorite movies! I even named my cat Viago. You should check out the "What We Do In the Shadows" TV show. Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement write and direct some of the episodes and also have cameos in an episode. It's different characters but is still done in a mockumentary style and has the same style of humor. All the episodes are on Hulu.
Maybe somebody already said this but the clerk of the shop that replied 'me too' to Nick's 'I'm a vampire' quote was saying the truth. He is in the undead party (when Nick transformed to scary face, he was shocked because they are supposed to act like normal humans and he just broke the rule)
Posted this above, but if you want to follow more stories of the cops, try and get a hold of the series Wellington Paranormal (www.imdb.com/title/tt6109562/ ). There has also been talks about creating a spin-off movie called :We're Wolves" (www.imdb.com/title/tt5471574/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 ), though no news in a while.
Love this movie. Introduced me to Taika. Jemaine Clemente is great from Flight of the Concord. Then I found out Taika worked on that.. Sticking to all the vampire lore helps the reality of it.
Honestly these days, most new films bore me. This was a MAJOR exception - it was one of the most creative, well-done, most enjoyable movies I think I've seen in the 20-teens. Really awesome watch-through of it too.
This movie has tons of the kind of subtle humor I like. For instance, when all that blood gets everywhere when Viago attacks the woman early on, and he's talking to the camera while holding a roll of paper towels. Or when the new vampire tries to fly in through the window in that smooth vampire way and it turns into an awkward and clumsy moment.
The What We Do in the Shadows TV show is excellent as well. Hunt for the Wilderpeople is another really good Waititi movie, and it strikes a ton more similar to Jo Jo Rabbit. Also, Waititi and Chris Hemswroth did a mockumentry short while making Thor Ragnarok, to show off what Thor was up to while Civil War was happening.
Yess this is one of my favorite comedies of all time. I wish it got more shine, I think it’s up there for best comedy of the 2010s and everything Jemaine and Taika do is gold
they made a tv show here in NZ called "Wellington paranormal" That's all about the two cops LOL it's so funny and very much in the vein of this film. Another Taika classic you might enjoy is called BOY. They filmed it in my birthplace!
You should definitely watch the show for this. The first season is pretty close to the movie in terms of what happens, but it definitely branches out into something more
Idk if someone said it already, but all these guys made a short film with the same name and characters back in 2005. Also Stu is literally just one of their friend who is an IT guy in real life lol.
Anyone who can nail a mockumentary, I'm a fan for life lol. This is simply clever beyond my imagination for sure. Another of my favorite mockumentaries is drop dead gorgeous. Its hysterical and has an insane cast. Very underrated movie.
The Only Lovers Left Alive is another "I am tired of being a vampire" movie Jim Jarmusch director. Set in Detroit. Also, Flight of the Conchords is great series to look into,music/comedy 🙂👍

Making a werewolf is either being bitten or scratched if you don't die you become a werewolf. Sounds like American Werewolf in London should be next. It has the greatest practical effects scene of any movie ever.
