    It is truly amazing how many miles of freeway there are in the LA metro area, and how you can be 70 miles+ from the city center and feel like you’re in the heart of it all, it just goes on and on. Really entertaining video, thanks for sharing.

      Pretty much. It's basically like 4+ Atlanta's. You can drive from Indio out in the east, all the way out to Oxnard in the west...that's basically almost 200 miles from east-to-west, and it's all part of one vast greater metropolitan region. Larger than quite a number of US states, really. That's why when people from Houston or Atlanta talk about their traffic, I tell them their traffic issues are child's play, compared to all the traffic jams that exist in Greater LA. You can basically combine *all* of the freeway traffic jams in Houston, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Austin, San Antonio and El Paso...COMBINED, and yet Greater LA still has all of those 5 combined metropolitan areas beat in terms of congested freeway mileage. Don't believe me? Go look at a live traffic map and compare.

      FreewayBrent FreewayBrent I just checked myself and holy crap you are actually right, that is insane, I never would’ve believed that in a million years considering how terrible DFW and Houston traffic is alone.

      @@FreewayBrent I drive a tanker truck locally in Greater Los Angeles, and it's amazing seeing the 5 moving this well, it's normally packed and you're averaging 30mph if you're lucky (and I'm not talking rush hour either)

    Really enjoyed the scenery of the west coast and how dramatically it can change in such a short period of time. As always great video and great music!

    Still waiting for the widening of the 5 in LA County from Cerritos to East Los Angeles. Currently, 5 goes from 12 lanes to 6 at the Orange/LA County line

    Interstate 5 passes near the Pacific Ocean between Oceanside and San Clemente as an 8 lane freeway but long ago this area may have been underwater. Only the tops of Point Loma and Mount Soledad may have been visible.

    350 YEARS AGO CALIFORNIA WAS A PART OF SPAIN, THAT EXPLAINS THE NUMBER OF SPANISH NAMES THAT ARE SEEN THROUGH THIS MOTORWAY. VERY NICE VIDEO. MY WIFE IS CALLED ANGELES AND WE ARE PLANNING A TRIP TO THE CITY WITH THE SAME NAME. THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO. BEUTIFULL.

    I’m so glad I found this video. My family and I are about to do this exact drive (we’re flying into San Diego, staying a couple of nights, then driving to Santa Barbara and ultimately San Francisco) and I’ve been very curious of what to expect from San Diego to L.A. I love how it feels like San Diego and Los Angeles are one continuous metropolis. Great video, it amazes me how great your quality is, I tried once to make a video like this but the camera was so shaky (still uploaded the video nonetheless).

    Traffic seems worse on the five than it was before they widened it beyond six lanes. It used to be (1990s through the year 2000), if you wanted to cut through LA going south to north during a weekday, you stayed on the five, and one would zip right along--you never took the 405. I guess this is not true anymore.

    Great video and content featured in this. Enjoyed the whole thing. Question. What camcorder did you use to film this? It's remarkably stable; been looking to upgrade mine for awhile now.

    The San Diego Freeway is one of the longest stretches of principal freeways in Southern California. More specifically, I-5 between the Mexican border and the El Toro Y and the entire I-405 CA form the San Diego Freeway with a total of 165.995 mi.

      i think it's hard to compare Texas and California. They are cool for different reasons. Hope to see a new InterstateJD video at some point in the future again. You're one of my favourite road videographers.

      Texas definitely has large freeways and stack interchanges galore. Some of California's freeways are just as impressive as Texas freeways, in my opinion (for instance, the Judge Harry Pregerson Interchange is 5 levels and slightly taller than Dallas' High Five Interchange). The section of I-5 shown at 10:10 (just south of the El Toro Y) definitely rivals the Katy Freeway or the 401 in the Toronto area. But Texas does make an effort to make their freeways look more aesthetically pleasing, such as with details on sign gantries and retaining walls; I personally think that California freeway signs and gantries look ugly by comparison. This is something that California could improve greatly upon.
      Of course, California beats Texas by far when it come to the scenery along the highways, making those long drives that much more pleasing. Anywhere in the western states is going to beat out the central or eastern states in terms of scenery (though parts of the Appalachians are impressive by eastern standards). California probably has the greatest scenic diversity of any state in the United States for that matter, and is almost a microcosm of the rest of the United States scenery-wise.

    The fast lane is the worst lane to be in when there's congestion. It stop more frequent and sudden. Seen it many, many times.

    The city is so expansive... Where do you get fuel along the freeway in these areas? I didn't spot truck stops or fuel stations near the freeway.

    • @AsphaltPlanet1
      @AsphaltPlanet1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      LA is gargantuan. There are lots of smaller gas stations at most exits, but there aren't too many large Texas style truck truck stops in the greater LA area.

    • @FirebirdCamaro1220
      @FirebirdCamaro1220 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Most of the truck stops are along I-10 in Ontario, Fontana, Rialto and Colton. There is a fuel only truck stop in Long Beach near the port, and a fuel only truck stop just south of downtown LA as well

    With the widening of the 405 they are doing, they really should move all of the dynamic message signs to be over the center lanes instead of being on the far right. Sometimes it is very hard to see what that sign is displaying if you are in the far left or HOV lanes.

    • @AsphaltPlanet1
      @AsphaltPlanet1  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      full width signs would probably help considerably for both VMS and just standard interchange signage as welll.

    • @Darknecros7
      @Darknecros7 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AsphaltPlanet1 That would be a good idea as well. Speaking of full width DMS/VMS signs that are above ALL lanes, they are doing just that in Las Vegas with Project Neon for I15, and 95 as you approach the Spaghetti Bowl, although on I15, they seem to be going out at least as far as where they are building the new Raider's Stadium (which is a bit past Tropicana Blvd. I can't wait to see what those full width VMS signs will look like when they are activated. It also seems to be getting set up for variable speed limits as well, since there is also small rectangular signs that are not activated yet, which is about the size of what a speed limit sign would be.

      bouteille d'eau 1 in Kansas City, Missouri, Missouri Department of Transportation is adding a 5th lane to i-435 from what we call the "Grandview Triangle" into the Kansas and Missouri state line. Yes Kansas City is in Missouri even though Kansas has a Kansas City, Kansas. Kansas City, Missouri was made before Kansas even became a state.
