Oliver Nelson is one of my favorite composers, arrangers along with my dear friend and mentor band leader Gerald wilson both where underrated. Rip to Oliver nelson & Gerald wilson..
Finally, a great video on the MASTER, Oliver Nelson! Long overdue. His melodic ideas during his solos are second to none. His Abstract Truth album is one of the BEST jazz records ever. Thank you Video Guy for this! :)
One of the all-time great musical artists -fantastic arranger/composer whose distinctive sound also graced feature films, from "Zig-Zag" to "Last Tango in Paris". Thank you for this and other terrific videos!
It would have been nice if I ever saw Oliver Nelson in person, unfortunately that was not to be. All I had to do was to listen to "The Blues and the Abstract Truth" and I realized the greatness of this man.
I worked on the backstage crew at the '72 Orange Coast College Jazz Festival and Oliver Nelson was one of the judges - college bands from all over for two days - and we talked. Real nice, humble cat. I used "Stolen Moments" as my theme song on my jazz radio show '74-'75. A great talent.
Was blown away by Blues and the Abstract Truth when I first heard this album. Didn't even realize Oliver Nelson died this early... The big band is fantastic!
I know it’s just a sideline compared to his massive presence as player/composer, but the book he wrote “Patterns for improvisation” is a classic. Seems to be taken for granted by players, but it has so many sounds that you hear played by Phil Woods and others during the 60s/70s. A snapshot of that time.
Blues and the Abstract Truth is, I would say, the second-finest small-band mainstream jazz album. Kind of Blue exceeds it, but only Kind of Blue. And the only criticism of Blues... I can make is that George Barrow never gets a solo at all. Would it have killed Oliver & Co. to give him a chorus or two?
Hey I know this is crazy but I’m Oliver Edward Nelson IV.. the great grandson of Oliver senior.. wanted to meet individuals who knew my great grandfather.. Hoping to find my place in music as well. Just comment if you could be any help!
I was fortunate to see Oliver lead a band in NYC shortly before he passed. Afro American Sketches has been a favorite of mine for decades....
I was at the same gig, at the Bottom Line.
Afro-American Sketches has been one of my favorite albums for decades, too.
Oliver Nelson was an incredible musician. It's hard to believe that one man could have done that amount of music such a period of time.
An amazing talent.
A major musical force, he excelled in every area he worked in.

Rip to Oliver nelson & Gerald wilson..
Amen.
The solos on that milestones arrangement were insane
you got that right
02:58 *Milestones* 3:33 Leo Wright - alto ~ 5:10 Klaus Marmulla ~ 6:14 Rolf Roemer - tenor
09:26 *Down by the Riverside* 10:27 Carmell Jones ~ 11:24 Milo Pavlović ~ 12:05 Manfred Stoppacher -~ 12:46 Carmell Jones - trumpets

Thank you for the name. I didn't know that Carmell Jones played with Oliver Nelson.
Carmell Jones -SOOOO Baaaad!!
Great footage of Oliver’s Berlin band. Leo Wright burning it up on “Milestones”!!
Loved Leo's work with Dizzy.
Oliver... Oliver Nelson...

Oliver Nelson has long been of my favorites. And yes Blues and the Abstract Truth is desert island recording.
I discovered Mr Nelson in HS and still quote his exercises in my solos to this day!
there you go
❤
Leo Wright{the first alto soloist} was my first influence and remains one my favoeite alto players.
So good to know more of Oliver Nelson's history. Thank you!
Thank you!

You're welcome 😊
Finally someone talking about the tremendous Oliver Nelson! His "penthouse dawn" is one of the soundtracks of my life.
His music has tremendous value. I hope more people will come to it.
Thank you Thank you Bret
My pleasure!
I first heard Leo Wright when he was in Dizzys group. He's also a fantastic flute player.

Yes, that book has been cited by many musicians as being absolutely essential.
To hear Oliver Nelson as a soloist listen to the Joe Newman Quintet at Count Basie’s, a very fine record from a short-lived ensemble
Thanks, will try and find
