The self titled had Alfredo Hernandez as their drummer, as well as some guest musicians on some songs. Josh did guitar, bass and keyboard.

Back in the day there was a really active QOTSA tape trading network all over the world. We would all send each other CD-Rs of bootlegs, in the MAIL. I remember getting this show from someone and laughing out loud at that. In '98, Kyuss had only very recently come apart (the "best of" record came out in 2000). So there were a ton of these shows with guys yelling "Kyuss." There's another great show in Detroit, I think it's '98 as well, where some dude is yelling "Kyuss" between songs. I was bummed Kyuss broke up, but when I started hearing Queens, I liked them way more. Some guys couldn't get over it.

Josh en su epoca de kyuss hasta varios años despues con QOTSA ha usado estas guitarras Ovarion.. se que en USA son bastante "baratas" a comparacion de otras de su competencia, y para mi tienen un sonido muy unico y que Josh lo adopto para su estilo. Saludos!! sigue tocando porque nunca es tarde para nada ;)

It has, but maybe it had to do with stage monitor sound being shit during the first songs because it's when he sung out of tune the most.

The beginning was much like that scene in Back to the Future she Michael J. Fox just started playing mad solos and everyone in the audience was petrified. You can tell everyone's trying to process the future.

Just saw them in LA. 25 years later QOTSA is still my favorite album of theirs. That dark, heavy, pummeling sound was somehow light and airy.
I just might see them live in a month if I find the time and money. Weird to think that I'm just a few years younger than their self-titled album, on which I can't agree more with you. Crazy stuff.

This was the start of something incredible. Keeps getting better and better but I always come back to the original quotsa album as my favorite.
I think Nicks vocal on tension head is one of the greatest rock vocal performances ever here.

I honestly think this was one of those situations where the crowd is watching intently.
Watching this video I can see Josh has improved a lot as a vocalist. The control he has over his voice now is impressive :)

This was the best incarnation of QOTSA. When it was three quarters of Kyuss. Nick Brings that Meth Rock Desert Punk aggression, Alfredo brings the Rhythmic psychedelia of Yawning Man and Across The River, and Josh had not yet gone Hollywood.
Josh was the driving pulse that kept them productive.
Alfredo Hernandez was the best part of kyuss and queens.

I still love Queens more than any other band to this day, but goddamn... no bassist after Nick came anywhere close to achieving that same cavernous, chasm-deep sound and propulsive style of playing. Truly a unique bass player whose style cannot be replicated. All the bass players that came after him, while more than decent, if not highly proficient players... they could never quite play make those bass lines pulsate note for note the way that Nick did. Don't know how he did it, whether it was in his thumb or his gear or a little bit of all of the above, but dude was a beast on bass. (With the coolest singing voice to boot.)

Trivia on why they are a power trio here: Dave Catching should be playing but his plane arrived late on Germany. You can see him performing with the band on the Virus TV special recorded a couple of days after the Bizarre Fest gig.
I'm under the understanding that the first tour in Europe (ten dates opening for Fu Manchu including festival appearances such as this one) Dave didn't come along because they simply couldn't afford to bring him.
I'm under the impression the Virus taping (at Club Logo in Hamburg) was from the show there that November, not the August show, and that's why Dave's there. Makes since, because in the walking/talking cuts in between song they're all bundled up because it's cold.

This really captures Queens at a time when they are just starting to light it up. I had a sbd copy that I turned alot of friends onto. I mean, 'The Bronze' is just off the rails taking a life of it's own! Everything I love about live performance.

Homme still working on his melodic vocals - The guitar sounds gritty and rough cut - Drumming straightforward and driven...They still have the lightning in the bottle! Love them and this shows to prove that they really were and am still now digging deeper than ever! Love it!

Wow, what an evolution this band has made over the years
really interesting, much like the beatles or pink floyd, quality bands go through a spectrum of sounds influence and ideas, compare radioheads first, middle, and last album, compare the white stripes, qotsa, any of these bands, they all make such huge noticeable transitions in their sound over a decade or two, but subtle from album to album. its the human element being represented in their music, as the person(s) they are also changes
@@BigHotSauceBoss69 Yeah the lyrics also got a little bit more 'vulnerable' by the last albums. There are some beautiful ballad-like songs on Like Clockwork and Villains. Although many fans tend to stick with the first albums, which I understand, I also dig the latest albums.

QOTSA in '98: the potential. How JH's voice transformed! Flashes of dry Homme humour too, in front of the boringest music audience I've ever seen. They needed more schnapps, at least.

I discovered this album when I was around 14, and it blew my teenage mind. Since then my taste in music has changed a lot, but once every year/second year I listen to it frantically and it's still has a refreshing effect on me every single time.

No you're right 100%. The precision in Josh's songwriting and guitar work is so underrated. Dude is the white boy Hendrix. A laser sighted boy wonder who couldn't be stopped. I also heard this album when I was like 14 or 15 and it blew my mind. Rated R and SFTD are great but, the 1st record is the main idea. It's gritty and raw. Will always be my favorite Queens record.

Really Josh Josh Homme is the man of the band, after years, same vocal, stage presence. Regular John I heard it at a show in 2019 after 20 years! it's the same thing. QOSG is amazing, congrats Josh!!!

Where it all began. 4 months after recording, 1 month before it was released. I hear Dave Catching was already part of the band by then, but they couldn't afford to fly him and his gear over to Europe at the time. True story. Moving forward...
I also hear Jon Theodore has been looking for a vintage 26" Ludwig Stainless Steel bass drum for years, Fredo should hook him up with his. That bass drum has desert history.
Hernandez was tight. And QOTSA with Oliveri was the best Queens.

I’d recommend any fans of Alfredo Hernandez check out his work with Across The River and Yawning Man. He was with Mario Lalli in both of them, and Scott Reeder in the Former.
@@MEATFACEFILMS Jon was always the most consistent aspect of early Mars Volta along with Ikey and Juan (hope he recovers swiftly from his recent accident, bless that man's soul). While Omar and Cedric got high on their own egos, they kept the ship together.
I mostly lost interest after Jon quit, it took me years to realize it was because his contributions were essential to the band.
