The Melbourne shuffle from the original master tape

  • The Melbourne shuffle 1
    Location: Dream nightclub Melbourne Australia
    Date: June 1 2002
    Sponsor: Globe international
    MC: Steve Douglas
Production: Wetmuzik AKA Simon Digby & Will E Tell.
Promotion: The Steve Douglas explosion on Kiss FM Melbourne & Matt Calendar of In The Mix .
    BACK STORY:
After hosting numerous international DJ's & running some pretty big raves at central pier and some other iconic rave locations around Melbourne, Simon & Steve were constantly being told by nearly every DJ they hosted, how unique & mesmerising Melbourne dancers were, no where in the world had any of them seen the moves or the enthusiasm of the Melbourne shufflers.
Steve, Will & Simon held numerous discussions on the topic raised by their international guests & toyed with the idea of running a small party dedicated to those that made the local scene, the DJ's & in the spotlight, the shufflers.
Steve started the ball rolling by putting it out there through his weekly radio slot on Kiss FM, the response was pretty good, Simon then contacted Matt at in the mix & a modest campaign targeting melbournes core of shufflers.
A date was set, Dream nightclub was booked & the result is what you see in this short video.
It was an effort to capture a time in Melbournes underground culture of the time, the music that moved people, the ambience of the dance floor & the shufflers that simply blew away so many of our international guests.
At the time of writing this, its been 18 years & everyone in these images is that much older, many will have kids & are doing the daily grind. I hope that some of them see themselves here & that it puts a smile on their faces.
I know for a fact that all who were involved in the Melbourne shuffle parties, who see the two videos we produced, we look back and we all smile at the good times & incredibly friendly people we met there.
The three tracks played here are.
    Danilo Vigoroto - Pression (B1)
Woody McBride - Off The Ceiling (Advent Remix)
Filter Science - Darkness Falls (Joey Beltram Remix)

Now sadly fenced off and apparently ready to drop into the ocean at any moment lol. The ALSO foundation used to put on 3 or 4 parties a year there that were the stuff of legend. Ahh, pre 2005. Those were the days. Hardstyle hadn't yet infected the Melbourne scene, ravers danced in lines and kept to their own space and dancing wasn't a competion. Shuffling was also still shuffling and it hadn't mutated into the running man. Unfortuantely the rise of the running man coincided with the birth of You Tube so very little footage of the orginal style exists. Even the "Melbourne Shuffler" documentary has very little of the orginal shuffle in it. Thanks for the post and the girl at 1:57 NAILS IT!!

Not according to the DJ"s that use to tour from the UK Germany and Sweden. They generally use to comment on the dance style in Melbourne as being unique. We use to tour some big names in techno and tech house in the day, and it struck us as interesting that we'd always get these comments. I'm not saying that there isn't other places on the planet where similar styles exist, but the basis of the the name came from the comments.

@@MDCDiGiPiCs What a load of tripe. This style of dance was well 90s, just look at Prodigys LeeRoy Thornhill. Thats where you got it from. You guys are muppets. I CLEARLY remember when you crew turned up pretending like you owned the scene. It wasn't Melbourne either, Brisbane had a decent shuffle crew mid 90s. System 6 crew did it better.

Yes agree, there was no name for it, it was just dancing. Also the raves where you had to call a number to get the address, then when you got there had to call again, like orienteering 😂 out in the middle of effing nowhere in the bush.

@@MDCDiGiPiCs I remember Hardware. Used to do the welcome NYE events? Richie Hawtin, Sasha, Slam etc. I was born 1990, missed out. Thankfully my friends older brother used to have tapes of Noom , Bonzai and R&S Records. Also Colin Faver's mix tapes. From 4 years old going to bed with dialactrum - pitchfall to Nexus 6 - Tres chic. Thought my bedroom was a spaceship. My favourite of all time though was when I first heard Welcome 2001 NYE. Slam - Positive Education was the 1st track if I remember correctly. I'm envious to those who got to enjoy the nightlife back then. You still had that positivity and creativity in the air. You are more than likely correct, the shuffle in this video & it's name was the result of the comments made by many international DJ's that we use to tour, & we toured a lot of big names. The overwhelming number of comments centred around the Melbourne scene & the dance style, both having a uniqueness. Without doubt, similar styles exist or existed elsewhere, but the fact remains that artists like Carl Cox, Humate, Der Dritte Raum and Thomas Shoemaker are just a few examples of those who come to memory that expressed their delight in the uniqueness of the Melbourne scene. Strangely one Carl Cox was so taken by the scene that he migrated to Melbourne.

Carl Cox was a regular at my local rave night in Nottingham, along with Fabio, DJ SS, Slipmatt, Grooverider, old school house.
