Living as a Witness

  • The sentence that we have certainly heard-that a sermon delivered through a church pulpit with a voice is not stronger than a sermon delivered through actions in the pulpit of life-is a warning that there is a pulpit of life that we certainly navigate every day. Words, actions, and decisions from our choices, it turns out, have a voice. This means that people see and capture messages from events, incidents that occur through and in our lives. And that certainly has an impact or consequence. If the Lord Jesus said in the Gospel of Matthew 5 that we are the light of the world, it means that we certainly shine, shining on people. And from our lives that illuminate those people, it certainly has an impact. Light makes sins exposed, mistakes open, and light teaches truth and holiness, and that is what we must do.
That is what we must live, because as it says in Acts 1:8, Jesus said, "But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." This means that our lives prove that Jesus Christ is truly Lord and Savior. So it is not just saying words or sentences in the form of sermons, seminars, or debates, but our actions prove the truth of the Gospel. And this is the responsibility of each of us. Our lives are the Gospel that is preached in and through our actions. With a life like this we change people, starting from changing our families.
Often people ask to pray for their spouse or children. How can we pray for someone and expect them to change in a short time, while they have been damaged by the environment for dozens to tens of years? Of course we believe that there is God's power that can restore, but don't forget our responsibility. Husband and wife must raise their children in the fear of God. If parents have hearts that fear God, then the nature and attitude of these parents will be transmitted to their children. But parents who do not pay attention to the spiritual life of their children, even parents who scratch each other or fight, then it is not surprising if children leave the house looking for a place where they can find a life that they think is happy.
Without much talk, the actions of parents are a powerful sermon that changes the character of children. Ideally, men, the father of the household who people call the priest, should show a good example of life; for the children and for the wife. And that will change the life of the household. If parents are truly, in this case the father or father, can show the life of Jesus, then as followers of Jesus, since on earth we have witnessed the glory of God. This is what we must do. It is not necessary to have a higher education, have money, or have an appearance that is more valuable in the eyes of humans but how our lives become witnesses, namely when we show the life of Jesus. The life of Jesus is a life that is blameless, not blemished, does not hurt anyone, is generous, likes to help. This kind of life radiates the glory of God.
Let us change so that we can radiate the glory of God. Jesus is the image of God who radiates the glory of God. But Jesus has ascended to heaven, so now we are the ones who radiate the glory of God. And it is not only temporary, but forever, as Jesus became God's faithful witness forever. Therefore, we cannot help but really become great and noble people. Becoming a preacher is not difficult, although it is not easy either. But the preaching that we do in and through our actions is not easy, it is extraordinarily difficult. Because true preaching, which changes people, is practiced every second, along with the changes in our lives. When our behavior changes to become more perfect, more holy, then our power to change people becomes greater. That is extraordinary, our impact in changing people is greater.
So, let us become believers who change, so that our impact will be stronger in changing people. Now we must truly understand that we have a responsibility to save people around us. For parents, they must save their families, certainly their children, then out to the extended family environment. If a servant of God or pastor must save the congregation. Don't expect the congregation to enter heaven through a changed life if the pastor himself has not experienced significant change. But remember, Satan will try to stop the pace of our life journey so that it does not become a blessing by all means to bring us down. But we must continue to be strong in God, must be steadfast. Whatever happens, we must continue to live in prayer, because only then can we be protected.
