  • In the Gospel of Matthew 16:26, the word of God says, "What good is it for a man to gain the whole world and lose his soul?" What this means is, what good is it for someone to have wealth, position, honor, or anything in the highest amount or the greatest amount that can be achieved, but to lose it forever. And this is very logical. Even if someone has everything the world can give, but if it is only for 70, 80, or 100 years, it means nothing. Especially if after that it is thrown into eternal fire. So, life, which is the same as the soul or life, is more than all the wealth on this earth.
When the word of God says, “Your mercy is more than life,” it means that the salvation that God gives is more than the life that humans have on this earth. In this case, there is one important thing that we must live by, that the human soul is very valuable. That is why in Luke 15 it says, “If one person repents, the angels in heaven rejoice.” Of course, the angels would not rejoice if the God of heaven did not rejoice. This verse shows or indicates that what happens on this earth-related to a person’s salvation-can move and influence God’s feelings. Because one soul is valuable.
So how glorious is the work of God that produces the salvation of the soul. Of course, salvation here is not just making people Christian, but really becoming a changed person, from a person with a human nature to a person with a divine nature. From a person who cannot be enjoyed by God to a person who can be enjoyed by God. From a person who grieves God's heart to a person who pleases God's heart. If you just become a member of the church and fill the church, it will not make the angels in heaven cheer. But repenting here, metanoia , means experiencing change, worthy of becoming children of God, becoming a child of God, worthy of being a member of the family of the Kingdom of Heaven.
Who are the people who can become these fishermen of souls? Of course, people who have already taken their own salvation into account. They must be able to understand the value of the soul. They must have reached the point of being afraid of being separated from God. And that fear must begin on earth. When our relationship with God is not close, not intimate, not affectionate, then we are truly disturbed, troubled. However, many people do not take issue with that. They do not seriously bring up the issue of their relationship with God, whether it is proper or not. Or we take issue with it, but we measure it with the wrong standard. We do not see the size of God. Its depth and height must be in accordance with what God wills.
Is our relationship with God satisfying to Him? We cannot become fishers of souls without properly questioning the quality of our relationship with God. When we meet God, the light of God’s holiness opens our minds to recognize our true condition according to God, not according to us. When we do not guard God’s feelings, which can happen in our lives, we certainly do not have the proper fear, we do not fear God properly. Our minds are only busy with many things. We should question this, “Whatever happens, God, as long as my relationship with You is good and right. If it is not right, forgive me. Tell me where I went wrong, God. Anything can happen, but don’t let me not place myself properly and correctly in Your eyes.”
The separation from God should be felt from now on. So, don't be satisfied with just being a Christian who comes to church. Ironically, the most damaged are sometimes activists and pastors, worship leaders, singers , musicians, and those who are active in ministry because they feel they are already in the church, even though that does not guarantee closeness to God. So we must have seen hell before we die, the horror of being separated from God. But also see heaven, the beauty of glory with God. After we question our own condition so that we continue to be in fellowship with God, then we want others to enter this fellowship.
