- How to keep an exotic pet. It can be a skunk, a fennec, or even a capybara. Above all, it’ll cost you quite a lot of money and effort to take care of one of those creatures. But if you’re ready to accept the challenges and responsibilities, pay attention to these important tips any exotic pet owner must follow.

SUMMARY:
- The capybara is a huge but very friendly rodent that can weigh up to 140 lb. This intelligent animal can make friends with anyone and gets along well with cats, dogs, and birds. You can easily train your capybara, and it won’t show any resistance or aggression.
- The fennec is the size of a chihuahua, weighs no more than 3 lb, and is getting more and more popular as a pet. It is an extremely friendly creature that’s full of energy.
- Despite being a popular domestic pet, the axolotl is on the verge of total extinction. Catching this amphibian in natural waters is prohibited, but it’s OK to breed it at home.
- Sugar gliders are incredibly affectionate and strongly attached to their owners and the animals they live with. Flying squirrels are nonaggressive, and they respond well to voice intonation and can be trained in simple commands.
- Genets get really attached to their homes. Despite its exotic looks, the genet is unpretentious. Its main needs are regular feedings and a clean tray.
- Hedgehogs are good-natured and have an amazing ability to get used to home conditions quickly. Remember that hedgehogs are predators, and raw meat should be the core of their diet.
- The electric blue crayfish need clean water, a large aquarium, and a place to hide in there.
- The kinkajou is curious and loves following its owner wherever they go, hanging off their shoulders and sitting on their lap. They don’t really make any trouble and easily adapt to a new home.
- Foxes have quite a specific character: they are devoted but independent and very curious, trustful, and playful. Finding a common language with this pet will take a long time, so you have to be patient.
- Skunks are affectionate and very loyal, much like dogs. A tame skunk doesn’t use its fetid weapons at home. The main thing is to regularly comb out the animal and trim its claws.

I wouldn't try to make a wild fox into a housepet, but I'd love to successfully befriend one. Get it to the point where it recognizes me and trusts me enough to let me close when it comes by. Unexpected encounters with a wild friend without the loss of boundaries that comes with taking a pet would be the best kind of surprise I could get.

As someone who has owned and bred Sugar Gliders since 2007 I can tell you that Sugar Gliders ARE NOT flying squirrels.

Jennifer Savage I’m think of getting sugar gliders and I keep getting two different answers saying they are inexpensive to own and others are saying they will cost more then a dog.
@@ashleyliu4757 They're in a completely different order, about as far from a squirrel as possible and still be a mammal. Marsupials are primitive, having been derived from more basal mammals. Squirrels are placental mammals. That's a pretty huge split.

You might try Lolli Brothers auction in Macon, MO. I used to go when I raised miniature horses. All animals are legal and raised by breeders. From the largest to the tiniest, I guarantee your next baby is there. Amazing show. All animals were treated with respect. Better do a lot of research first, most have special needs, and it's really hard to beat a puppy.

Sugar gliders are part of the koala family and they’ve been domesticated for about 15 years but you need too read about it
I actually have a pet capybara, his name is Gerald. I got him in 2013 and he is a fun, cute and playful guy.
I've always loved foxes and thought they were really cute and friendly. I've been trying to convince my roommate to go get a domesticated one
They aren't really friendly I am very scared of them today one jumped in my chicken coop and it really scarred me cause I was home alone and I was scared that it will eat my kittens cause foxes eat everything

There has been a 60+year experiment in russia to domesticate the animal. its been pretty successful , but its been a long process of weeding out the bad and only breeding the foxes who show people friendly traits. That's domesticating The scientist Name starts with a B, but yuo can get one of these foxes for around 9K shipped to america

Very informative, thanks for sharing. Although, as a person I do not agree with any animal in a cage. Especially birds, just imagine if you had wings and got limited to a certain space where in many cases you can't even spread your wings. Let alone fly anywhere. I say if it needs to be caged, then it belongs in its natural habitat...the wild.
Thats why birds are required to have certainly sized cages. I put my 5 parakeets into a large cage for umbrella cockatoos. Its big enough for a breeding pair of cockatoos and i put square chicken wire over the bars to keep them in. Birds love their cages. Its like their home within your home.
+Stella Snugglz Must admit, I do have limited knowledge on birds. We all have our views and different opinions. I guess the preference will differ for each person individually. I'm glad you look after your birds, but still as a person I do not like seeing any animal caged. Not even in the zoo, or the Circus. But that's just me.

My house isn’t a cage but I feel sorry for my cat staying home all day plus my garden isn’t the best for cats and my cat doesn’t run away from me he’s always by my side
@@cawfii OMG, another cat person! I too love my cats to bits, and they follow me where I go. The one is quite old, turning 15 ( human years) this year. She's also diabetic, and I have to give her shot of insulin each morning. The other is actually a stray cat who just decided to move in, making himself ever so comfortable. Then there's my water feature outside that replenishes the neighborhood strays, and assorted birds. I agree, animals must have the freedom we so richly enjoy. Around 7 months ago a crow came to window. I kept some grapes there. At first it got scared but then he ate them he came again the next day and i gave more food. Since then he has been visiting my window since then. If I try to pet him he moves to the other side and gets frightened. He even recognises it when his name(Crowe-Russel Crowe) is called. He's very cute. Its illegal to keep a pet crow but he's not my pet(just a friend)

They aren’t as easy to care for as they make it seem in the video. Once they get older they mellow out a lot. But generally speaking once they hit adolescence they do not like to be handled or touched.

I live in a city that has lots of capybaras. They really are friendly and after I first found out we could own one, I got interested. I do have a friend in another city whose aunt has a capybara. It does seem like an amazing pet, I would love to take care of one!

Fennecs actually can stand certain low temps. Not extremes like -20°C and below. Sahara can get really cold at nights and Fennecs actually know how to survive the cold. But I do agree that ya should get it some warm clothes.
