    Hi Erika! Strasbourg and the Alsace region are much older than the concept of "Germany" or "France"

    • @augth

      The concept of France dates back to the 10th century at the latest

      Same for many other thousands of cities in Europe like Paris or Berlin. Nonetheless Paris is French while Strasbourg or Berlin are German.

      @@jmlepunk Strasbourg is both Germanic and German. The fact that the local German population reacted lately to French colonization is a different story. The region looks as German as the other side of the river. Local dialects in the north are closer to the ones on the other side of the river than in the south of the same region.
      French as been spoken there for barely 50 years more or less but German/Germanic dialects is/are the indigenous language(s) of the region. The French government needed to make people they were rescued" from the "aggressive" German/nazi regime because they wanted a natural border on the Rhine, so now if you asked the older generation they will simply feel homesick (somehow) for Germany while the younger generation will say anti German things because that what they've been thought at school. Things like "malgré nous, because they sent us to the nazi front in WWII". Do they even know that Hitler sent people from ALL GERMAN REGIONS TO FIGHT IN THE FRONT? France simply needed to make them see the rest of Germany as the bad guy... Saying the Marselaise was also first sung in Strasbourg is also even stupid because nobody spoke French back then.

    The Strassburg cathedral was built by an architect from southern Germany called Erwin von Steinbach.
    The most famous German writer Goethe lauded him as a true genius.
    It is the greatest cathedral in existence imo

      it certainly is in the top 5, but I would say that the large miscalculation 'if we build the other tower the thing will collapse' prevents it from getting top spot. Nobody is perfect, but that is a rather big flaw!

    English language reporting about Alsace and Strasbourg always dwells on the same clichés : it looks ' German' (which is always reassuring) , while not getting over the fact the Strasbourg is located in France (which is less so), because it doesn't exactly match with other clichés about France. Alsace has been part of France since....1648, which of course is quite recent and admittedly through military conquest, but 'Germany ' as an unified country has existed only since 1870. Actually Alsace is very much part of a Rhenanic, multinational Europe.

    • @JakobFischer60
      @JakobFischer60 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Just want to say that Alsace and Lorraine are german speaking and therefore belong to the german ethincal group. Located on the left site of the Rhine has made the french emperors always keen to have them in their power and have the Rhine as a border. So it is fair to say that France has made a huge impact on the people as today most of them speak french.
      But it is not important that they belong to a country, Germany consists of many ethnical groups, alemanis, swabians, bavarians, franconians and so on, together with non-german speaking like danish in the north and the sorbs to the east. It is important that we all belong to Europe and have the same rights.

    • @francoisleyrat8659
      @francoisleyrat8659 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JakobFischer60 Part of Lorraine is of Germanic language, the south is romance. And, as I said, "Germany " as an unified entity has existed only since 1870. I had a friend from Stuttgart who found Hamburg or Berlin almost "foreign". Note that some regions of France have been French for a a shorter time than Alsace (Nice and Savoie since 1860 only) and they do not feel less part of the country.

If you are a foodie, it´s better to look for places to eat away from the centre near the cathedral. They are very expensive, and really, the food is just awful. At least, that was my experience two weeks ago.

      100.000 alsacian guys died during the WWII to keep Alsace in France, this deserves some respect. i've nothing against Germany, as i'm part french, part german,, and part from Hungary. Do not merge the fact that alsacians are near the Rhine, speak an old 5th century german like language, ... and be german? no.... in Italy, you got the High Adiggio county, german speaking people.... but Italian. And also in Texas, Castroville county, 18th century pioneers from Alsace still speaking a kinda alsacian.. but they are americans
