I was disheartened as I thought Mufti Menk was going to discuss the validity of the various types of mortgages etc. I love the mufti & am extremely grateful for what I have learnt watching him but one of the criticisms against him, his avoidance of certain key topics. Would be of interest to know his stance on a topic like mortgages.
He being Sheik Mufti doesn't mean, he is specialized in all topics for e.g mortgages. He can only speak on the subject he is specialized in. Only Allah knows it all .

That’s not riba firstly the renting you are paying for a service , however the mortgage is different as it involves interest on top unless of course you go through the islamic process with islamic banks, but conventional mortgages are haram. Riba doesn’t refer to one being more expensive than the other it refers to the ‘Extra’ paid in other words interest on top .
But you need a large deposit in order to purchase don't you. So if you have thousands saved and can afford the deposit then surely you can afford the rent.
Most of Muslim leaders like to avoid controversial topics such as buying a house on interest, god and the prophet declares war on people who associate themselves with interest in the quran and hadith

Buying is considered better. Because most of the time you don't know who the previous tenant was. I've lived in a rental property for the past 2 years now and when I moved to this house it smelled horrible. The previous tenant had multiple pet dogs. And the stairways is full of dog urine and smells really bad. We have told the landlord many times to clean it but have not been fixed. On top homeloan repayments are less when you own a property compare to renting a house where you would pay $50 to $100 more per week.
