- Tom discovered that strength training, not endurance sports, hold the key to staying healthy and strong as he ages. Under expert coaching, he refined his recovery, nutrition, and strength-building techniques, even taking home powerlifting titles. Tom believes that by investing in quality training now, you can save on medical bills down the line and enjoy the rewards of true strength.

Strength is great. Its sad how many guys my age obsess over having abs instead of getting stronger...
They value what they're programmed to value. It's poison like everything they feed us
Everyone has abs. Just being focused on lean to show them is not a life time goal.
So you believe it's good to be old and fat?
71 years old and still enjoy lifting weights! Currently doing the classic push-pull-legs routine with at least a day of rest in-between. Learned a ton from Starting Strength. Get Rippetoe's books!
Have them and love them. I'm 63 next week 😀
135 lb standing press is IMPRESSIVE👍🏽
Starting strength gave me a base on which to build and I have never looked back. I have recently hit 54 and I do not feel my age at all and I do hundreds of flights of stairs at the plant I work at each week in my rubber boots with no issues at all. For a long time I thought that strength training was not for people once you hit a certain age - Greysteel and starting strength crushed that belief into the dust where it belongs :)
AGREED!
What a great testimony for strength training. This guy was pulling some serious weight off the floor. Nice job!!
Id been lifting weights for decades but starting strength really saved me from myself once i got into my 30s and saw my gains begin to drop off. I didnt understand why my (frankly insane) self-designed programs were no longer producing results. I was getting steadily weaker and the injuries began to accumulate the more i tried to fight against my declining strength. SS was exactly the reset and reality check i needed. Im still not as strong as i was at 28 but thats ok. Im healthy, my joints feel good, and im making long-term steady gains again. Big thanks to all at SS.
I'm amazed by the gains I'm achieving in my 60's with Starting Strength. Jen Thompson is an inspiration for me regarding gains as we age.
Losing strength in your 30’s ? 😮
At least wait till your 40 to say that 🥹
You absolutely nailed it, Tom!
Hell yes, Tom 🤙
Thanks Ray!
At 38 I just hit 240lb squat. Strongest I've ever been approx 2 months into SS
I'm a big proponent of strength training. I've been at it for nearly nine years. At first, I thought this gentleman was about my age, 73. It surprised me to hear he is around 10 years younger. Whatever, thou, good on him for getting into the gym. The small town I live near does not have a "Starting Strength" gym, but it does have a great weight room. I decided to not compete at power lifting, since really, does it matter whether I am the strongest old man around. I would be close to the 1000# club, I think, likely a smidge short. Get under the bar, work hard, enjoy other hobbies, eat and sleep well, and most of the rest will take care of itself.
Man since I got back into lifting everything is better.. got my blood work recently and the improvement has been almost magical. A lot of my friends same age as me just don’t want to get into lifting it’s almost like they’re scared of doing something manly
Free Weight Training. The most well-kept secret fountain of youth. You can start at any age. You can turn back the clock.
Where'd you get the free weights? Mine were expensive
@@constablekohler Ha. I meant barbell / plates kind of stuff.
@@dasdguy7606 I know lol I was just being a dork 😂
Hey Tom! Great work my friend! Keep it up!
Wish you guys were in Canada. I would be there in a heartbeat
Craig Bearss works in Vancouver. 100CAD/hr
Hey buddy, keep at it! I'm maybe an age class below you in powerlifting and a weight class or two higher, (I'm M2a, 125kg) and I agree 110% that showing up is winning at this stage in my hobby career as a competitive powerlifter.
Thanks. I'm really happy with my gains.
Awesome!!
First. Great channel.
My go to channel for learning squats and dead lift !!
Strength training is no more the exercise for longevity then endurance training is. They sit on opposite ends of the strength and conditioning continuum. The best exercise for longevity is in the middle of the continuum.

Idk man, the Japanese seem to live over 100 regularly and they don’t really prioritize strength and size. Seems like they just walk a lot and eat clean and in moderate amounts.
Diet/Nutrition is just as important.
66 years old and I do strength training via calisthenics. Recent workout: th-cam.com/video/x0C7zFKS898/w-d-xo.htmlsi=xjNEdhmWmkLFMmuR&t=34
2:23 Holy cow. I thought this guy was great because he looks in his upper 70s. He's only in his early 60s? I'm 60 and he looks a little younger than my dad. Strength is #1, but you also have to pay attention to cardio and diet. Don't put all your eggs in one basket. I bet he has a garbage diet. He has to sit down between sets? Keep moving. Stay on your feet moving most of the day. That's important when we are old. Eat right and maybe that gut will get smaller. That's just as bad for healthy aging as being too skinny. But hey, if longevity isn't important, and you're only interested in winning powerlifting competitions, do what you have to do and gain more weight.
Because we are using TRT?
@@GFYYDB im 44 got a stiff morning wood every day (I'm avoiding processed foods). I'm in Serbia, you can get here Galenika's testosteron ampule very cheap in every farmacy without prescription. I have never used it. Waiting to be a father and then I'll go at it.
Dude pulled 415 off the floor and has a 1,000 total...seems like whatever he's doing, it works!
If you’re at that age its best to do cardio and strength work. Strength alone is not longevity. Predictor of longevity is vo2 max not max strength.
