Does the Xbox One X look better on a 1080p TV compared to the Xbox One?

- Hi, this video attempts to show if the Xbox One X looks better than the Xbox One on a 1080p television. On a 4K HDR TV the Xbox One X will look great but Microsoft also claims that it makes 1080p TVs look better. The test in the video was done on a demo experience called 'Insects', this is free to download from the Xbox store. As you will see in the video 'Supersampling' makes the Xbox One X look amazing even on 1080p TVs which is definitely noticeable when side by side with the Xbox One or Xbox One S.

I noticed that too. Although, he did have the OG on a low end name brand and the X on a dumpster fire monitor... I will say, the Xbox one x makes a huge difference on a 1080p screen based on my experience. It's night and day!!!

so true. couldn't agree more. I have bought assassin's creed origins twice. Once on my ps4 and i couldn't bear the 30 fps and sometimes lower render. I bought it on my pc with my new gtx 1070 and now i get solid 70 80 fps. Makes so much difference.

I should be obvious. The Xbox One X renders the games with higher resolution textures. A 1080p TV can show the higher quality textures, shaders and overall graphics quality.
Xenon777 Yes, but the PS4 Pro doesn't do this "supersampling" for every game like the Xbox One X does, so it's not obvious for everyone. It needs to be pointed out for a lot of people.
You also get a higher level of AF (x16) and AA on unpatched/non-updated games. Something you will notice on a 1080p display as well as on a 4K display. HDR 1080p displays are also (slowly) starting to appear.

Thank you for doing an offscreen recording of the monitors. As someone who's never had a 4k monitor it's hard to tell the difference between 4k and 1080p when the displays are screen captured, which is what most comparison videos do. In this video, I can at least tell the difference.
Wow.. this was the most simple yet most informative video I have come across. Thanks man. I bought the Xbox One X, but was going to wait till I got a 4k television to plug it in. This video has convinced me to unbox it and start playing.
I upgraded to a Xbox One X from a one S and the thing I noticed right away was how smooth my games ran. I don't have a 4K display, just regular 1080P, but I could see a very noticeable improvement with the graphics.
Wait til it starts having heating issues and the power supply goes out.

@@sharukhkhan9242 Because lots of them do. My son bought one brand new, had to send it in within three months for repair. Years later, the the power supply goes out. I replaced it with a used one because they aren't sold new.
Then it stated over heading anytime a heavy resource game was played. I sold it for parts and went back to the original Xbox One. Lesson learned. Just because it's new, doesn't mean its better. I do have a 4k TV and honestly unless I was playing them side by side I don't notice a difference in graphics, but I'm sure the X performance is better. I'm just not willing to take another loss on buying one.
@@TubeWatcher on a 4k 60Hz new tv my xbox one x did perform awesome, compared to my previous HD tv. The extreme sound it was making while playing on a cheap FULL hd tv stopped! That is, because it didnt have to downscale to 1080p from 2160p during gameplay. So, not only looks thousand times better on 4k tv's, but it also performs without any issues like overheating etc. on a proper 4k tv , the way it is meant to be played!!

Umm the first xbox that you shows can't display 1080p the maximum is 920i how out put, the S series is same 920i rendered to 4k as maximum but this have HDR option, and X series is a native 1080p how standard

Everything that makes Xbox One X look better even on 1080p:
1. TRUE 1080p Gameplay - Not all games on base Xbox One run at full 1080p, most run at dynamic 1080p (basically, to prevent fps loss, the OG Xbox One sometimes lowers the resolution scaling of the game, I'm sure many of you Xbox gamers out there have experienced when your game suddenly gets a bit blurry in intensive moments, this is the Xbox detecting that it can't maintain a steady 30/60fps at full 1080p so it's lowering the scaling to lessen the framerate loss) However, the Xbox One X runs dynamic 4K, which is usually 1300p-1900p most of the time, of course, this results in a solid non-dynamic 1080p when playing in 1080p, as in, game never lowers resolution below anything you'd notice in 1080p on Xbox One X.
2. Supersampling - For non-PC gamers out there, supersampling basically is when you render a game at a higher resolution than the native resolution of your monitor, this results in less jagged edges (anti aliasing) and also sharper, nicer textures, all games on Xbox One X run at dynamic 4K, so all of them get supersampled to some extent.
3. HDR - This basically gives better color, it isn't really noticeable on an ordinary TV, but if your TV has HDR (or better yet, an HDR computer monitor which has no color compression) this is something that is very noticeable.
4. Better Framerates - Fact is, Xbox One X is more powerful than Xbox One base model, it's got a better CPU, better RAM, and a better GPU, this allows the Xbox One X to pull more frames per second than the base XB1, as in, your Xbox One X will not get as many lag spikes when playing games.
5. Better Anisotropic Filtering - Barely noticeable, but makes textures look ever-so-slightly better, in my opinion, it's only really noticeable if you are using a computer monitor as your screen, and you certainly won't notice it while gaming.
6. Patches (Duh) - Obviously, on supported games, you get higher quality textures and remastered graphics built to run on the Xbox One X, but not all games have this.
Well it still uses the x86 jaguar APU... they just overclocked the processor.

Yeah I noticed even mass effect andromeda look super sharp and clear and higher textures on the Xboxone X. Unlike on my Xboxone s which look vary choppy and low texture.
Vince, what would be the effect of supersampling if my TV is a 4k panel but I set the One X to 1080p output? Will it downscale the 4k and then my TV re-upscale it back to 4k? Would this mean better image than plain 1080p upscaling with higher framerates? 4k output is not worth it for me because I sit very far away from the TV>
My question is, is a QHD, 1440p 2k screen the best compromise? Noticeably better than 1080p, but will 1440p offer better frame rates than 4k, while still looking better than 1080p? Is is possible to tall a 32" 2k monitor from a 32" 4k? Or does the screen need to get larger to see the difference?

So does the X supersample all games at 4k & downscale to 1080p or is that only with the X enhanced games? I know it wont help 1080p textures, but it could help with aliasing.
does it work with a normal hdmi cable, and hdmi slots on monitors or does it need it need a high speed hdmi cable? Coz i want to make sure that the stuff i have works when i buy it. Got a 1080p monitor.

You are going to be dissapointed, if you don't have 1440p or 4k TV. Coming from a PC gamer who uses super sampling (Dynamic super resolution) a lot before. Its good but the 1440p or 4k display will actually see a clear difference.

I have both, prefer pc controls over Xbox. I do all my fps games on pc and all my storyline games on Xbox. Pc gaming is great, but in order to play recent titles at max settings over 60 fps you better have a good rig.. sadly it cost more than $1k if you start from scratch. Good side though is if you are doing a new build you can use a lot of your old parts. Example your case, hdd, os, mouse, keyboard, monitor, psu, cd drive, etc.. I feel more immersed in pc gaming than console gaming. Just my 2 cents.
Dan Lorenzini the thing is that if you just wanted to match or slightly outperform the Xbox one you don’t need ultra settings at 60fps. Xbox one usually runs games at 1080p or lower at 30fps at low-mid settings so if you can get better than that you’ve won

Do you know if the games have to be designed for 4k for them to look better, or will the full Xbox one library look better on Xb1X?
It has to be enhanced for xbox one x or else it wont take advantage of the extra horsepower avalabile in the xbox one x, tho some games that run at an uncaped framerate on the original Xbox one could run smoother on the x, one example would be the witcher 3 the unpatched version runs at 30fps on og xo and 60 fps on the x, but if you want to see the full list of enhanced games for the x then look here www.xbox.com/en-us/games/xbox-one/xbox-one-x-enhanced-list

Even some unlatched games will perform a little better such as games that have dynamic resolution scaling, they will be at higher resolutions pretty much all the time.

Normal games and even back compatible 360 and og X Xbox games look better with out enhancement patch. With patch of course it will look even better. But everything gets a boost in general. Just not as big of a boost as a patched game.

Very nice video. I would have liked to see the exact same model monitors for a more true comparison, but, it's still obvious that the X looks incredible in 1080.
I tried something similar but using my custom gaming pc with a GTX 1060 and my 55in 4k HDR tv. Tried to compare playing Tomb Raider at 4k vs 1080p. While 4k is slightly sharper from a normal viewing distance away, I still favored the 1080p experience as I had butter smooth graphics at 60+ FPS vs around 30 FPS. I think the new XBox One X is more impressive for its ability to hit 60 FPS consistently over the original One.

upscaling effects with still better (very little) then original xbone one with a .1 revision on the hardware lmao. When will suckers learn? funny how much better they actually look on windows 10 with real hardware. Built my own little one x ass kicker and added my software to run in the background and all my games are enhanced the right way. Although I have a hdr 4K tv I’ve just realized a night and day difference between the 2 on my tv. If possible buy a good 4K tv for your Xbox one x, you won’t regret it.
Ciara Ross. To really see a good night and day difference, try the game DC Universe, or Just Cause 3. And those haven't even been patched yet, they just simply run better on the Xbox One X, especially DC Universe, you get a almost consistent 60 frames per second, (only a few hiccups here and there while Things Are loading) And absolutely outstanding textures and resolution, you'd be hard-pressed to get 25-30 frames per second on vanilla Xbox One!...

These upgrades just do not justify the outlay in price - I'd rather keep the Base system and get the jump up next generation, which will be in less than 2 years time. And that goes for xbox and playstation!

Tbh the 4K on vs off on the X looks like you could achieve the same thing by bumping up the sharpness setting on your monitor. In terms of OG Xbox One vs X though the OG renders a lot of games in 900p or 720p anyways so just the bump to 1080p will make a big difference, regardless of super-sampling.
No, Super Sampling increases the amount of actual geometry rendered on screen by the game engine.

Running Minecraft in 8K Super Sample on a 4K monitor it's almost shocking how stable the image becomes compared to native resolution.
Higher resolution is really needed in modern games with all the extreme details like grass and hair, character models in the average game today have way more detail than 1080p can possibly capture. Really gaming was ready for 4K a long time ago but Hollywood Movie Producers are giving massive resistance to 4K, thus the display industry couldn't move forward until they had something that would satisfy all the ignorant people who hate 4K resolution.
There's enough 4K exposure now that everyone "knows" 4K is the real deal, but you still constantly see "4K haters" running around spouting nonsense like "4K isn't noticeable at normal viewing distance". To make it worse they usually use "4K Movies" that are still only mastered in 2K resolution as an excuse to say 4K is bad.

The sickening part is that so many movies are shot in 4K or near 4K but never mastered in 4K. Hollywood has a Godzilla sized grudge against 4K.
Literally correct with this, its about as much of a visual improvement as that. If I ever wanted a console, I would want the one x and only if I had at least a 1440p display. Though I suppose if you upgrade tv soon enough its not really a waste.

Yeah i know that you can supersample with the insect app but i dont remember the x rendering an image at 4k if the output is set at 1080p. I dont have much experience with the one x but i dont remember it doing that all the time

kartus kartus I would say if you are a casual gamer who plays Call of Duty, Assassins Creed and other triple a titles the Xbox One X is the way to go, if graphics aren't a big deal or you like the PlayStation exclusives go with a PS4. My personal preference is the PS4 because of the exclusives but everyone has their own preferences. Hope this helps.

With supersampling on it detect tv color depth sharpness and brightness.

I actually have an 8k tv and a 1080Ti FTW 3 GPU. So I know very well what's worth and what's not. Moreover, this demonstration proves nothing on account of 4k being better. On the PC you can actually see a huge difference not just some hairs on a close up plant in a scenario where it's already pre-rendered for you and you're looking at a static scene. Also, you can have all the 4k tv's you want if you don't game far enough away from them, the image is actually a lot worse that it would be if you played the same thing on a 1080p TV. The distance you need to be away from the TV depends of the size of that TV. I wanted to buy an Xbox X just for kicks to play with my "more primitive friends" but this video convinced me not to.
I can see your stance, I have a day one edition xbox one on a 50" Samsung 1080p, as bad as I wanted to pounce on the xbox one x, I didn't think it would make to much of a 500 dollar difference from what I'm playing now until I upgrade to a 4k tv first, but all in all it all depends on if the consumer feels like if he or she got their money's worth, I didn't think I would so I chose to wait... but good info man

Also pause any game and take a screenshot on 1x and on xb1, details are better, even on a 1080p. (im saving up for a good low lag 4ktv, or a large 4k monitor next!)

Sounds like a rebrand of antialiasing.
But it is calculating it using the "sacrificed" pixels, as opposed to approximating and blending pixels on edges.
When you watch Blu-ray on 1080p will it also look better?
