    ******* Apologise about the hand waving ********
    I am very sorry that there was a lot of handwaving in this video. I have received several comments regarding this and I have taken it on board. Unfortunately I had already filmed, edited and uploaded Episode 2 before I got this advise so there's a lot of handwaving in that one too. I have just finished filming Episode 3 and 4, and there is much less handwaving there. Thank you for your patience and thank you very much for the advice.

      Excellent comparison. Thank you for explaining why you updated your basic 12-color choices. I plan on using this to build my own collection. No need to apologize for the handwaving. It felt nice and sunny, like the colors you were comparing.

      The hand waving is fine. I can still see the colors and the gesturing kept me engaged to what you were saying, rather than veering off into a daydream -- which I often do when staring at whimsical pretty colors.

    It's amazing how Hansa Yellow Deep mixes more vibrant reds and oranges yet New Gamboge mixes more vibrant greens! Yet they're so bloody similar! Thank you for always doing such thorough videos on these. 💜

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know! I was surprised by that too. I guess there's a lot of variation in yellow that is hard for us to see because of their hue.

      Art of Ley Saulnier and Dr. Oto Kano... Looking at the undertones can help. NG has a slightly yellower undertone than PY 65 and what you see in the wash helps you understand the mixes you can get a little better. But pigments can differ from pigment supplier to pigment supplier and from batch to batch. A redder undertone leads to more muted greens. A very similar yellow to DS New Gamboge is the middle opacity version of PY 83.

    I'm so glad you've rebooted this series, Oto!! I'm in the market for a warm yellow, so it's perfect timing. I like that the New Gamboge has a wider range from a slightly deeper yellow orange to a pale yellow. What I find interesting is that the two pigment color mixes as well as the one pigment color, which supports Daniel Smith's assertion that the way they mix their non-separating multi-pigment colors allows them to mix as evenly as single pigments. I really thought I'd like the Hansa Yellow Deep more, but the New Gamboge has more depth, so I'm going to try it in the stick format. Thanks for the intel!

    • @OtoKano
      @OtoKano  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm so glad you are enjoying the new season! Yes, there's no separation between the two pigments in New gamboge in whatever you do to it. (with the exception of the gauzing, but I really like that it separates for this method). Happy painting!

    Im so happy to find this channel! Your comparison videos clear so many questions I had from just reading pigment descriptions in databases. Especially Yellows! It's so hard to see differences in those without mixing. You are my favorite youtuber for now.

    I went with the hansa yellows as the 110 did not rate well in my Wilcox book. My copy was published in 1991, before Daniel Smith opened business. Things may have changed since then. I wish there was a current issue of the book, but we have the internet now. The author cautioned then about the differences between watercolors pigment and printers ink. Considering the variables in screens I would still prefer print.

    XD I'm glad this second season was possible! I don't have any of those and when it comes to yellow I feel I don't have a strong opinion. Yet I finally bought the DS dot card and as I'm waiting for it I might prepare a chart with both transparency test and glazing since those are two major factors in my art. From the two, I like the best new gamboge with that unnatural glowy yellow tint in the watered down wash! Thank you for the informative video as always.

    Really happy to find this demo!!! I was on my way to "refilling" my New Gamboge (Winsor Newton) when I discovered that the PY 153 was not available. I think they are really interchangeable. Hansa Yellow Deep is also good for mixing brown and skin tones. I like to mix it with the Phthalo Blues, too. But I don't use it that often on my palette. I have both of them and both are so similar in mixes. There is not much of a difference for me personally.

    Hi Oto, my New Gamboge is a single pigment; I don't have Hansa Yellow Deep. I do use New Gamboge for sunsets, sunflowers, fire, and any other place where I want a warm yellow, either on its own or mixed.

      Oto, my brand of New Gamboge is Daniel Smith. A friend had purchased a tube for me. Not knowing that he had done so, I had purchased a tube for myself. I still had less than 1/4 of paint left in the tube that I wanted to replace. So, it's lasting quite a while.

  • @ianjackson5834
    @ianjackson5834 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    not much in that one, it would be interesting to see the differnance with Hansa Yellow deep and Hansa Yellow light, tfs

    • @dynomax101
      @dynomax101 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ian Jackson HY deep is yellow orange, HY light is a brilliant, greenish lemon with similar opacities. However, there are various hansa yellows available with differing properties and permanence ratings. It would be good for us to know what paints you are talking about. Each company often changes the pigments in their colors. That happens for a number of reasons, some good, some bad.

      Which would you go for instead?

    • @calamityjitt667
      @calamityjitt667 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oto Kano that's what I'm thinking about currently, but it's true I composed my palette around the py110 cause its super transparent, although closer to po62 benzi orange than yellow. New gamboge hue can be mixed with py151 or even py3 both are in my palette, but at first glance I realized that both of your selections mix pretty different than py110 on its own, when I got impression the difference isn't "that" huge from other resources :)
      I'm single pigment lightfast nerd T_T py3 and pr122 are only "good" colors I compromised on cause I didn't find any good options :D (py175 is difficult to handle and for some reason I don't really like it's hue... Looks a bit "dirty" to me)
      So now... I'm staying where I am, mostly cause no money... But it's nice to re-evaluate decisions once in a while :)

    New Gamboge is part of their "Essentials" 6-color pack from Daniel Smith, that contains the warm and cool primaries. This test shows that they should have gone for the Hansa Yellow Deep instead of the New Gamboge as part of their warm primaries trio.
