  • Conflicts between nations can often seem intractable. But as North Korea scholar Sue Mi Terry argues, that doesn’t have to be the case. Drawing on the case of South and North Korea, she calls for more proactive, rather than reactive, foreign policy, making an impassioned plea for a brighter future for the two nations.
Sue Mi Terry is a foreign policy expert who served in the CIA for seven years. She is a senior research scholar at Columbia University.
This talk was given on Saturday, November 1, 2014 at TEDxNewYork. The theme was “Grand, Central.” For more information, visit tedxnewyork.com or follow / tedxnewyork .

Unfortunately this isn't a particularly bold idea. Reunification is the official goal of both governments; the problem is that there's no feasible path to that goal. That's what I was hoping to hear in this talk: a bold plan toward Reunification. She didn't seem to offer anything new here.

I seriously doubt the top 1% of N. Korea want reunification. They want to keep their power and lavish lifestyle which they won't continue if they have reunification.

German unification was possible only in a very friendly constellation: peaceful collapse of the Eastern part, a tolerant Soviet leadership (with their empire also teetering on the brink of collapse). Now, the context is utterly different. Of course a lot depends on how the actual collapse will happen in the North, but now we can expect very poor cooperation on the Russian and Chinese side, and much more geopolitical opportunism. The situation would have to be handled very carefully and with well-constructed international consensus not to develop another smouldering conflict zone that can light up any moment there is not enough attention on it.

Please, do NOT see those videos exposing " Hey Kids ". It will scare you real badly.

So you are telling me that training for an invasion of NK every year is "giving incentives to stop NK trying to get nukes"? Despite many countries without nukes that the US (you know that country with the most offensive wars in history, that is the only country ever actually using nukes in war) did not like got destroyed? Irak, Lybia, Syria?
We seem to have a different understanding of diplomacy...

I'm sure she knows what she is talking about, but she doesn't give any actual unique insight. I world of liked to hear her expand up on the different view points of different regions and age groups. If she gave detail of any one of her points this might of been a good talk. Otherwise it is just a rough overview which already mirrors what everyone knows. Rather pointless talk.

USA should NOT participate. It is your - Korean - business and YOU and only you have to solve this. Do not encourage USA to influence the other country's business!!

The Privileged Capitalist They did not call China lol It was MacArthur who was too full of himself and started to march into the direction of China, because he thought he had already won the war and might as well free China from communism. Truman already warned him to not provoke China. But yea he was one stubborn fella.
