      Übel cant defeat Frieren. You may have misunderstood her power. She can cut anything that one would expect to be able to cut. The cloak and the hair are magically enhanced but you normally expect to be able to cut them. Thats all Übels power does. Btw, Burg = stronghold and Sense = scythe.

  • @KartGaming

    Übel wouldn't be able to defeat Frieren, her imagination just views cloth and hair as something she can cut easily - Frieren doesn't use these

      Also Ubel’s Reelsiden has a range of only 5 meters as stated during her fight with Wirbel. Frieren would only have to stay outside Ubel’s range and attack with a spell powerful enough to overcome Ubel’s mana supply.

    At the beginning, you misunderstand. Fern definitely DID use Zoltraak in the previous ep - it just did not work because the Frieren clone defended against it. Zoltraak is what Fern uses to blow off the clone's arms at the end.

    My fun fact about this episode is that in the manga, the last bit of conversation between Übel and Sense, where Übel finishes with "then you should cut it", is actually the gag panel at the end of the chapter. In the anime, they not only integrated it into the conversation scene, they turned it into Übel's badass finishing line for the fight. It's such a cool adaptation.

    That final attack from Clone Frieren is terrifying. It's been established that normal magic is the translation of thought. But this attack was PURE thought, without going through mana. So it's instant, undetectable, and irresistible. As Fern said "the height of magic". Frieren said she hasn't used it in 80 years, which means that's probably the attack that she used to kill the Demon King. Fern was lucky to survive.

    • @ExpectoRidiculum
      @ExpectoRidiculum  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      exactly my thought!! it hasn't been mentioned later but I think the next season might give us more clues as how she defeated the Demon King - I bet it was spectacular!

      @folcwinep.pywackett8517 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

      魔法の高み "The Height of Magic" is anime only when applied to what the Frieren clone uses. In the manga it is called "The Apex of Magic". If you put the Japanese text into Google translate, it will come out as "The Height of Magic". A height is a scalar value, but an apex is not a value. An Apex is a pointer to a location which is divine. Essentially an Apex points to Aureole (Heaven). Apex comes back into the discussion of Demon Magic later in the manga. The Frieren clone is an exact copy of Frieren, but the clone can use the Apex because it is not a demon.

      @@folcwinep.pywackett8517 Yes, It is a mistranslation as you said. 高い means high as an adjective, 高さ is a noun and means height. 高み is also a noun, but it means "quite high place". Japanese people liken the process of acquiring skills to a ”road”, and often attach philosophical meaning to it. So 魔法の高み has mean of being in a quite high state or realm where they can reach near the end of their hard magical training. If it were translated accurately, it wouldn't be suitable for the title lol.

      @@ExpectoRidiculum In Japanese sentences, the point of view is always on the speaker. Therefore, the subject can be omitted in Japanese. 🤪
      So "The Apex of Magic" in the manga is a phrase from Fern's perspective, and as @folcwinep.pywackett8517 has posted, it is not an objective fact of the story world but Fern's impression. I tried to translate 魔法の高み in another post. These are wonderful words that remind us of Fern's sincere personality toward magic and her deep respect for Frieren.

    This will be a long post but here we go.
    Ubel's visualization is not exactly a talent as much as it is a mental disorder really. Consider this, when you see cloth for the first time you see it as simple fabric. Whether that cloth is thick or thin, it is still cloth and you assume it can be cut right?
    Now, imagine that that cloth is reinforced with carbon fibers or even thin metal rings. What would happen then? You identify the reinforcement and you know intellectually that this isn't just a simple piece of cloth anymore. It isn't something that can be cut with a pair of scissors and you will search for another way to bypass the new armor. That is the logical thing to do, that is what been able to identify a difference in a previous concept leads to. No matter the imagination you might have, there is no way a person would gaslight themselves into believing that a pair of scissors would be able to cut reinforced steel. That is what bewildered Sense.
    Ubel is doing exactly that. She knew that the cloak in front of her was tank level armor, she knew that anything she threw at it would do nothing to it, yet, she actually believed that what she saw in front of her was not reality and that it was a simple piece of fabric! I mean who does that? Even idiots that do the same attack again and again against a fortified position believe that the attack will eventually work because the previous attacks did some damage, not because they actually believe that the new attack will actually work on its own. Ubel literary has programmed in her soul a belief that if something is cloth or hair as a general concept, then that something can be cut period! It's not something that can be taught, its not that I will convince myself that I can do something. She actually perceives this as reality no matter that it objectively is not. And she actually knows it is not in an intellectual level. That is why Sense is horrified and calls her crazy and her ability a superpower. Because it is actually something that IS crazy and Ubel IS crazy. She isn't a real genius in the orthodox way of thinking. She is an anomaly.
    And that is where the limitation of her power comes from. She can cut anything she has identified as something that can be cut since she was a child. Meaning cloth, hair, flesh etc. She can't cut cleanly stone, steel or wood or anything else like that. Her attacks might do some damage, but those attacks would do as much damage as the force behind the attack, it will not bypass it completely like it would do to cloth or hair. But defensive spells such as the one used in the series is another thing entirely. The defensive spell used is a mana construct that its entire purpose is to block completely mana based attacks such as her signature spell. She learned this to be the truth when she first learned the spell and grew with that concept as an absolute truth and reality. She never had any other influence about this, so she can't convince herself that her attacks can actually bypass this defense which is why Wirbel defeated her. Her attacks were blocked and he is overall a better fighter with far more experience and talent like she herself admitted.
    As for Fern, while she is an impressive mage and will certainly grow even stronger with time and experience, she in not ready to face Frieren alone anytime soon. The episode cemented the fact that Fern could not face Frieren, she acted as an assassin the entire battle, waiting for the perfect opening in order to exploit it. The clone was focused on Frieren for the entire battle, and we were told in the episode by Frieren herself that some of the openings she created for Fern to exploit, Fern was not able to recognize and use, meaning that Fern is still lacking both in experience, skill and sheer strength. While she does have the potential to grow enough for her to defeat Frieren in the end, that is still many years down the road if it is even possible. In her current state, I would place her under Denken, Wirbel and Methode since I believe all three of them could win against her in a one on one battle. Denken because of his experience and knowledge. Wirbel because of his battle experience, versatility and his signature spell Sorganeil. Fern is a long range mage and does not know a lot about his magic, so it would be easy for him to place her in a position that he can see her whole body and trap her. And finally Methode is extremely versatile and has restrain magic that we were shown to be extremely effective against Fern, and it is implied in the episode that she defeated Fern's clone in a one on one battle already.

      What you’ve said makes sense. Her condition is not an unlimited power of imagination then. I appreciate you’ve explained this to me ☺️ Yes, Frieren is an opponent on a completely different level and she’ll always be getting better and better plus we don’t actually know how far her skills and knowledge goes and how well she can score against every opponent she encounters. I’m sure she’d ace all of them one way or another. It’s rare to encounter another skilled in magic elf like her

    Ubel definitely couldn't defeat Frieren, because (like Wirbel) Frieren uses basic defense magic. Because visually it is not a thing that can be cut (like cloth or hair), it would be effective against Ubel's attacks. Also, Frieren is very good at quickly assessing opponents in combat, and (like Ubel) can move very quickly. She has everything needed to counter Ubel's strengths, and an overwhelming advantage in experience and power. She would absolutely decimate Ubel.
    Sense, on the other hand, is PARTICULARLY succeptible to Ubel in a way that transcends the relative power levels of the two mages.

    After meeting Übel, Burg was only half the man he was before...
    I'm really curious about Übels backstory with her older sister (the author is too good to just mention her for this little flashback, there must be more there. Maybe little Übel was training magic and killed her sister by accident which made her crazy?).
    Did you catch the visual mirroring in the scissor blades was current Übel before the flashback to her younger version watching her sister sewing and little Übel after the flashback?
    And don't forget her statement in Episode 24 when she fought her clone and we had a face to face closeup with her saying "You really must want to die!"
    Analyzing this sentence alone, spoken by her to herself, would be a field day for any psychiatrist.

    This episode is so great! I mean... I don't think there's a single episode of this show I wouldn't say that about, but still... it is!
    It's got Ubel vs. Hair Demon, Frieren and her duplicate destroying the universe at each other, Rapid-fire Zoltraak Cannon, a sneak peek at some kind of attack Frieren used against the Demon King (which might technically be a curse, since Fern couldn't even register it as a spell and that's how curses work on mages, and if that's the case, *WHERE DID FRIEREN LEARN THAT?!* ), and most importantly: my beloved Methode being her calm, collected, hyper-competent self. 😉
    But seriously, Frieren and Fern both do such amazing feats of magical prowess in this episode, which is exciting, but they also continue show us - and each other - how deep their bond is. When we see Fern so scared that Frieren will get hurt but not worried for her own safety at all, and when Frieren shows Fern such absolute faith in her abilities (more about that in a second), it sets up this intense contrast with how Serie treats her students, and it just makes you wonder what Serie would be like if she had ever had non-elf friends like Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen. I know you've already finished watching the series but I'll save the rest of that thought for a couple of episodes from now.
    But about Frieren and how strongly she believes in Fern: this is something I hadn't really considered before just now, but Frieren isn't like Serie, or even Eisen - she has always told Fern she believes in her, praised her successes, encouraged her when things were hard or scary, and so on. As a teacher, she's been a mentor in the truest sense of the word, and we know she believes in Fern even more than Fern believes in herself. So when Frieren says to her, "I underestimate you," that's *incredibly* high praise. This is a woman who has seen 40-50 generations of human mages come and go, and honestly believes her 17-year-old student/daughter deserved to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the 50 strongest mages on the continent, and she's basically saying even *that* is probably still not giving her enough credit.
    I know at the end of the day it's fantasy, but these stories can hold a lot of truth; can you imagine how much better the world would be if everyone who raised or taught children could see them that way? Frieren may not understand emotions or relationships, but in a way she is a shining example of how to show someone you love them when you don't know how to say it. 🥲

      I’ve never thought about their relationships in this way. She really is a shining example to Fern. I guess I wouldn’t mind having Frieren as my parent even though she struggles with emotions (to which I can relate at some point). You’re right - every episode is great. I personally love watching mages battle and especially Frieren vs Frieren due to her vast knowledge of amazing skills. You’re right about Serie - she probably would have been completely different if she had human friends and a different exposure to species. Instead, perfect example of an alienated elf who lived for centuries, alone. Introvert lv 10000 😄
