The thing you need to remember is that planes don't rely on ground traction for control, instead they use control surfaces. You notice how he uses bursts of engine power to make the rudder more effective in controlling and turning the aircraft.
I don't see much risk. Just because it is fun and different doesn't necessarily mean its stupid. That kind of "play" is how we learn. Crazy as it sounds this would teach you something about a tailwheel aircraft. How it acts without influence from the ground/wheels.

So many timid pensive babies on here. Totally safe especially with a low wing and it’s called mastery of your aircraft and could definitely help in identifying and training how to get out of a ground loop. It’s also just plain trying something “different“ other than flying it.

I landed a super cub with really sticky brakes on a icy lake, and interestingly it tracked completely straight. I did not even have to touch the rudder.
Should be affected less. When the tail breaks out, friction on the main wheels in opposition to CG wanting to move out provides the momentum to make the plane spin.

This guy is obviously an experienced vans pilot who has done it for years. They are taking a risk but it's really not that dangerous, and they all consent to what they're doing. One more thing - some horse sense here - remember, aircraft are quite STRONG in the air - wing loads, various physical forces can be performed at times within limitations- just a wonder to witness - let alone pilot yourself. On the ground - aircraft are very, very FRAGILE.

Done that with my airboat 😆 You get that thing going 50 or 60 and just crank the rudders and romp the throttle and she spins right around. Its a really cool sound hearing the prop wash when you hammer on it going backwards 😆 you get stopped real quick lol

I wonder how thick the ice was. I've driven my pickup (4x4) on ice before. Remember that airplane weighs around 1200 lbs empty and probably 1600 here in the video. But it only has 3 wheels. I don't see much danger here other than the guy with the video camera because the plane can't stop on a dime. Rudder and throttle response is the only way to navigate the plane.

That looks like early ice. Just because it is thick enough here does not mean it is thick enough over there. Toodling all over the ice might look like fun but in assessing safety my guess is the pilot was making a lot of assumptions. Add to that, opposite of skiis, tires make a very small footprint putting quite a load on the ice immediately below them. He got away with it this time.

As a bush pilot for 40 years this maneuvering on ice was "normal"..To not practice this is "stupid"
I do that with r/c aircraft, an use to fly circles dragging a wing tip on ice for stability!
