I have a beuchat espadon and wouldn't recommend it. Yeah it's cheap but it's seriously underpowered with the 13mm band especially because it comes with a 7mm shaft for whatever reason. It's slow and rapidly loses power, not useful for anything beyond a few feet and fish frequently have time to dodge the spear. The thin string it comes with tangles a lot and as you say is weak and flimsy, lack of line release is also a negative. The gun needs a thicker band or another 13mm band for useable power and range but I'm not sure if the cheap plastic trigger mech can take it. A better wishbone, better shooting line and more power are needed for this gun to be useful
1.6mm thick monofilament is good for these guns. You'll also need some double barrel crimps and crippin pliers. The length will depend on whether you do a single wrap or double wrap I usually change mine every 20 to 30 fish if you're using dyneema or monofilament you'll need to change it more often
There is a flaw in the design were the shaft locks it's to damn tight to fit anything it kind of sucks I had to mod mine and spent more then I paid for yourself a favor buy a regular spear gun with just bands with dyneema wishbones something I wish I would have known ..trust it's not worth it

I suppose you would need a thicker rubber for a thicker shaft so the tip can penetrate.
What length of line must I buy
