7 Candy Bars I Only Ate After Moving to America

  • Being from a country famous for its line of Cadbury products, I came to America with an unhealthy addiction to chocolate. I also came with an unhealthy bias as to what good chocolate is. That said, I recognized the importance of immersing myself into American culture, from its laws and customs to its mysterious, err, cuisine. And so, here are 7 candy bars I only ate after moving to America.

      Damn, it's almost 3:00 in the morning. I'm whiling away the night because I have nowhere to be in the morning and no reason to get up before or after the sun rises due to the coronavisa. As such, here I sit reading other peoples comments about chocolate, which I don't even like that much. I do like Lawrence though as he makes me laugh...a lot. I didn't realize people take their chocolate so seriously until I started reading the comments here. Thanks for the laugh. Do you say that from experience? lol. Or, is it just a guess? I understand some parents literally forced their kids to eat soap as a punishment back in the day. Either way, I loved the comment. Very witty!

    If you haven't, and can find one, try a Goo Goo Cluster. They are America's first combination candy bar and are made in Nashville, Tennessee. They are mainly a regional southern thing. Dark chocolate with a cacao percentage above 50% lowers blood pressure and has lots of healthy benefits. If you eat Hershey's "Special Select" dark, then you are just eating candy. It is only 45% cacao and has no health benefits.
      Check out Ghirardelli and Lindt chocolate in the candy section, I eat 72% Ghirardelli. 1-2 squares per day.

    My favorite American candy bar, which I don't think they make any more--haven't seen one in decades--was called the Seven-Up Bar. It was like seven individual chocolates that you might pick out of a chocolate box, but all fused together into one bar. One item was always a Brazil nut, chocolate covered; one was an orange jelly; and then there were, I think, a chocolate cream, a vanilla cream, a couple of caramels, and I'm blessed if I can remember what the seventh one was. We used to get these all the time in California in the 1960s.

      Brazil nut
      Buttercream
      Butterscotch Caramel
      Cherry cream
      Coconut Caramel
      Coconut
      Fudge
      Mint
      Nougat
      Orange jelly
      Unfortunately they stopped producing this bar in 1979. I would have liked to try them.

    The things you learn about a country you lived in that you had no clue about until this video! While living in England I ate the British versions of every chocolate bar listed in this video as being marketed in England under a different name, and had no clue the entire time that I was eating the same chocolate bar made by the same company that I'd had a million times over in the States!

      That's so funny! Where do you live now? I did a bunch of videos with taste tests of all of these different candy bars for my channel. It's fun to compare the different versions side by side! Tomorrow I'm filming Dove vs. Galaxy!

    I know this is about bars, but the best chocolates in the country, as far as I have found, is See's...which I found out uses Ghiradelli's as their chocolate provider, so that makes sense.

      See’s always has a kiosk at the malls at Christmas time and they are constantly busy.

      I grew up on sees, especially around holidays. Used to be really amazing. Would always go visit their iconic stores with checkered floors. The past few years though they've gotten shitty. Prices have gone up, quality's gone downhill. No longer living local to any sees have had to order online and have it shipped and get their large easter eggs and such. The chocolate was all discolored like it was old or had been refrigerated, the filling was dry and nappy instead of fresh and creamy like it used to be. Just garbage, so sad.

      I visited San Francisco once, and it seemed See's is to that city what Starbucks is to other cities - there's one on every block. Great chocolate. Their maple cashew brittle is to kill for.

    I have been randomly scrolling through your videos. If this one is out of sequence, I do apologize. I have eaten all the bars you showcased. Though many of them are quite delicious, the one I favor most is the 3 musketeers. I ate that bar for so many years. It was something I just couldn't explain. The soft texture, the taste of milk-chocolate, the creamy smoothness was something that stayed with me. Of all the bars you highlighted, that bar will always be my favorite. Late night working in a warehouse, break time, what better to have than a 3- musketeers, and a hot-chocolate drink. 7:00am, shift change, and I'm ready to embrace the day!

    I live about 15 minutes from Hershey, Pa. Some fun facts: The Reese's factory smells like popcorn :) We also have a Mar's factory in Elizabethtown, Pa. Hershey was originally named Derry Church. Yes, the light poles in town are Hershey Kisses. They also drop a Hershey Kiss every New Year eve.

      Mmmm, Lindor truffles... if they weren't so damned expensive, I'd have a bagful every day.... so it's probably good that they're so expensive 😂

    • @IceMetalPunk
      @IceMetalPunk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Nicky L It comes to about $1/ounce, which isn't too bad except that because they're round and the way they're packaged, a 5oz bag isn't much chocolate at all to spend $5 on.

    • @timeflysintheshop
      @timeflysintheshop 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Lindor truffles are mostly palm oil anyway. Look at the ingredients. Many "chocolates" aren't even made with cocoa butter anymore. Legally something can not be called chocolate unless it is made with chocolate liquor or cocoa butter. Dove is one of the few that is still made with cocoa butter. Dove dark chocolate is my favorite. Junior mints are a close second. 😀

      @@timeflysintheshop Lindor truffle ingredients: first listed is sugar, second listed is cocoa butter. (Or for some varieties, it's sugar, then milk, then cocoa butter.) What were you saying about it?

    Now I'm confused. Because I am certain that I have seen Mars bars here in the US, and wonder how they differ from the world's version...EDIT: A quick check reveals that the US Mars bar was a version of the Snickers bar, with almonds replacing the peanuts. It was discontinued in the US, then revived as Snickers With Almonds. I'm okay now.

    Interesting about the three different flavors in Three Musketeers. When I was a kid, my favorite candy bar was the "7 Up" bar. It wasn't flavored like the soda; it had seven different fillings; sort of a chain of chocolates with different centers.

    I knew that the Milky Way bar we have here in the states is named Mars in the UK but learning that a 3 Musketeers bar is called Milky Way in the UK blew my mind. I also recall that a Snickers bar used to be named Marathon and I'm not sure but I think it is still Marathon in the UK. Also, Reese's Peanut Butter Cups taste a whole lot different in Canada then they do here in the states, give it a try.
