People believed that I rode a horse to school, that our parking lots had hitching posts, and we didn’t have pavement or concrete. It was funny!
Loathe root beer. Hideous. Also hate hot dogs, but I like corn dogs. Blue Bell ice cream is the best (Ultimate Neapolitan!). Pechan? Pek-ahn! One great summer food: watermelon! Salted peanuts in a cold Coke is very refreshing, and probably utterly Southern and I'm sure many people are bewildered by the notion.
Detroit gave us Motown. They also gave us two of the best things on this list: the Detroit Chili Dog and A and W root beer. Even now at 60 I recall my childhood in Michigan being one of chili dogs and a n ice cold A and W. You can not get better than that even in a five star restaurant.
Get on a roller coaster at a state fair or amusement park, get off the ride. Go find chili dog. Eat chili dog. Get back on roller coaster. Rinse and repeat until things get really messy. My record was 13 in a row, back when I was 14. I never threw up... but my cousin that went with me on all the rides did.
The small amusement park by me had a thing called a “Tilt-o-Whirl” it was a large disc that spun and tilted randomly, on it were these pods on wheels in a circular rail that spun around also randomly since they moved with gravity only. This didn’t had any sort of pattern, so you spun around and tilted back and forth wildly for 2 minutes... there was a reason the thing was nicknamed “tilt-o-hurl.”
When my family moved to another state when I was 10 and my dad didn't have a job yet, my mom bought 3 economy size bags of frozen corn dogs. By the time they were finally gone, I never wanted another corn dog again.

It was interesting to me to find out that it wasn't popular in Europe, and it's unknown completely in Asia. And everyone from outside of the US thinks it tastes like medicine.
You can buy a pork tenderloin on stick at the WI State Fair. Also, lots of people mentioned a root beer float, but nobody mentioned a Black Cow, which is a shake made with root beer and vanilla ice cream.
That vendor in Oregon who had his hot dog buns ruined by the rain called his “corn dogs” pronto pups. There is a difference. Pronto pups have flour as well as cornmeal. Corn dogs are all corn and sweeter. You might like a pronto pup where you didn’t like the corn dog.

Superman ice cream is SO amazing. But DEFINITELY a midwestern thing. When I moved down south for a few years, I was incredibly distraught to find that not a single ice cream stand or grocery stores sold anything like superman ice cream.
Root beer is not a “Summer food”! (And “food” is not the bit I’m focusing on....). It’s a 365 day a year thing, no connection to any particular season nor weather. Now a root beer float I could see an argument for that being a summer delight, but not just root beer.

“Pechan” 😂🤣 Funny story: My mother (who is from Tennessee) lived in Boston for a while when she was young, long before she even met my dad. Anyway, one time she was discussing pecan (which she pronounced with an ‘a’ as in car) pie with her roommates, and they thought she was being snooty because they pronounced it with an ‘a’ as in can.

it is amazing to me that nobody has figured out how to fix chili dogs. the same innovation that gave us corn dogs should be able to solve that. though really, hotdogs in your chili is just better and easier. also the best corndogs are pancake-covered breakfast sausages.
A&W is the best root beer (there are others that are nice, but none tastes like A&W) - best served in a frosty mug direct from the tap in an A&W restaurant. No ice required if it is cold enough. Luckily you can buy it in cans in a pinch.
I thought Rocky Road ice cream was invented in the late '70s! Apparently it wasn't in the local (Louisville, KY) markets until then because I remember a sudden big to-do about the flavor and it became very popular. I have some in the deep freezer now... Excuse me...
We ate Rocky Road in the early 1960's in Southern California. My dad did boiler and machinery inspection and every time he was at the Baskin Robins plant he came home with several of the 3 gallon tubs of ice cream. Some were flavors that they were testing. Thoss were good days.

The first to turn a dusky red then orange and finally yellow .
Very pretty tree in the autumn.

How do you get a "CH" sound from "pecan"? There's no H...
Maybe someone took the ck sound in some pronunciations and spelled it how it sounded (since ch can also make that sound)
Also, Italian pronounces a lone "c" as a "ch" in combination with the right vowels
Lmao

You crack me up. I love watching you videos and American experiences and learning of the British ways.
When I was in England during my time in the USAF, I ordered a quiche from a local restaurant. I pronounced it quickie. They were not amused, but my fellow service members were rolling.
They thought I was serious in my mispronunciation. I was not, but playing the idiot from small town in western Texas amazed by big cities was just too much fun!
People believed that I rode a horse to school, that our parking lots had hitching posts, and we didn’t have pavement or concrete. It was funny!
Loki1620 in the uk quickie = sex... so it depends on their age gender how funny they found you 😅
I live in a heavily Amish populated part of Ohio. Many businesses do have hitching posts for all the buggies AKA rolling obstacle courses.
Having spent most of the last 12 years in Texas, I have seen hitching posts outside of various businesses here. They're rare, but not unknown.
I've heard Europeans, who spoke English as a second language, pronounce it as key-she, that was very funny

You have successfully mispronounced pecan in a way to confuse everyone.
Lmfao I was like.. what the F?

Loathe root beer. Hideous. Also hate hot dogs, but I like corn dogs. Blue Bell ice cream is the best (Ultimate Neapolitan!). Pechan? Pek-ahn! One great summer food: watermelon! Salted peanuts in a cold Coke is very refreshing, and probably utterly Southern and I'm sure many people are bewildered by the notion.
As someone who also lives in Indianapolis, I would pay MONEY to hear a full length version of your first state fair experience
Detroit gave us Motown. They also gave us two of the best things on this list: the Detroit Chili Dog and A
and W root beer. Even now at 60 I recall my childhood in Michigan being one of chili dogs and a
n ice cold A and W. You can not get better than that even in a five star restaurant.
By Detroit Chili Dog you mean a Coney Dog?
Get on a roller coaster at a state fair or amusement park, get off the ride. Go find chili dog. Eat chili dog. Get back on roller coaster. Rinse and repeat until things get really messy. My record was 13 in a row, back when I was 14. I never threw up... but my cousin that went with me on all the rides did.
And that's why state fair midways smell the way they do. 😖
This reads like a 4chan post

You can also make a tea out of Sassafras. That was a good day as a kid when my dad showed me that.
That is an accurate definition originally. No longer true though.
I'm taking a deep breath, and letting out a wistful sigh over something else this pandemic has taken from me...The Illinois State Fair.
Rootbeer popsicles are the best.

I thought Rocky Road ice cream was invented in the late '70s! Apparently it wasn't in the local (Louisville, KY) markets until then because I remember a sudden big to-do about the flavor and it became very popular. I have some in the deep freezer now... Excuse me...
In 1983, Weird Al released "I Love Rocky Road." May have helped popularize it a little?
