  • Officers of the Maryland Transport Authority Police Dispatch and Response can be heard stopping traffic and inquiring about crew members working on the bridge before it collapsed, in an audio recording released.
A container ship struck the bridge that had "lost their steering" struck the Key Bridge, crumpling almost the entire structure in the water.
Governor of Maryland Wes Moore said on Tuesday it was the quick thinking of workers and police that saved lives when the ship steered towards the bridge.
The collapse had left six workers missing, who are now presumed dead.

That one officer is lucky his back up didn't arrive sooner. Sounds like he was planning to drive out onto the bridge to get the workers once that happened and he'd have probably been lost as well.

From now on they should have it policy that anyone working on a bridge needs a radio. When we are working in an industrial environment we need a radio on the plant operators channel so they have a way to contact us. There should be an emergency channel for people working on a bridge as well.

@@pin65371Don't know if the construction crew had radios or not, but radios can't magically talk to each other. They need to be programmed with the right frequencies to talk to one another. So if all workers were in the middle of the bridge working, a police radio is not going to be able to talk to their radios to warn them to get off the bridge. So a worker with a radio would have to be on each side of the bridge, which should be how it is anyways to direct traffic properly. Source I am a radio technician who programs radios. I haven't really looked at anything about this incident other than what's seen in news titles tho so take what I said with a grain of salt

In maritime shipping, all kinds of breakdowns happen, as in this case with the Singapore container ship. Where there is a large movement of sea giants - container ships, to pass difficult or dangerous sections (bridges, narrowing of the river and other difficult places), groups of wet tugs should be on duty for safer passage of difficult sections of the route.

Sad as it is to have lost that crew, the actions of everyone involved kept this from becoming a real tragedy. So few lost to such a major disaster is something to be proud of, and I really hope if anyone that this falls on the company who owns the ship and not the crew, who by every source I've seen, did everything exactly as they should have in response to the situation. You just can't do anything to stop a loaded ship without steering, the inertia is insane.
Edit: And the writer for the lower bars needs a better editor, "Steered" is just the wrong word and it could lead people to misinterpreting what happened, it drifted into the bridge. As the saying goes, the beginning of wisdom is to call things by their proper name, and I'd add, and to choose ones words carefully describing anything.

The traffic was stopped in time. They needed a loudspeaker to warn anyone already on the bridge like the workers.
Even if there had been an automatic system, and the cops had risk, leaving their post and hoping that nobody drove past the barriers (which people often do) all they could've done is gone out on the bridge to say "it's about to come down" and probably died with the workers. A warning system, so that dispatch could broadcast directly to people on site would've been better.

Around bridge pillars currents can be very… sucky for lack of better word. The pillars create obstructions in the water that water has to flow around. This creates faster flowing water that in turn has a lower pressure. Things like to go towards low pressure so if the ship lost steering it isn’t inconceivable that it was sucked towards a pillar. Even if that wasn’t the case ships have tons of momentum
