The explanation about the difference between using a filbert and a round brush was helpful. I see how you are able to make a lovely painting in a short time because you know how to make the strokes and where exactly to put the colours . You get it right the first time. I have set a goal of drawing for 5 min. a day (usually it ends up being longer) and it really does help doing it every day. I just use photos in magazines I already have as reference. It's just for practice.
Hi Ellen have been following you for 4 years now and this tutorial has taught me so very much. I love the detail about the brushes and the strokes. One thing I always remember is practice practice practice and I take a tiny sketch book to work and draw something every day. It really does help. Thank you. I look forward to these Friday tutorials. Now I need to go and paint!!
I quit watercolor for about 18 months and then I was a beginner... so if I can make myself begin again 😊it will be like starting over. So I really appreciated you sharing about filberts and round brushes!!! I started watercoloring watching you 4 years ago ... I also bought some of my favorite colors in Holbein because of you!!! Thank you for ♥️ sharing today!!! With love from a California Gramma 🎉
I have been watching your tutorials since 2022. I have come to love this hobby because of your instruction. I am so happy with this tutorial it’s a review but I really learned from it, I obviously needed it. I especially liked that flowers are not just one color but many. Just need to be brave and daring . Just do it
Always love your clear explanations and demonstrations! Thank you for sharing and I look forward to this Friday series! Also love how you showed putting in the complimentary colors- makes such a difference and don’t know that I ever would have thought of that!😊
So agree! This has helped me so much. I always get too much color at the beginning of my paintings. After watching this I think I need a lighter stroke and thinner paint. And, more practice!
Thank you so much for explaining about the brushes! What a wonderful help! I love your loose style of painting. You make it feel relaxing & “doable.” I’m hopeful it will help me to conquer my “overthinking” & perfectionist ways…which is paralyzing! 😢
THIS! Flowers are exactly what I am struggling with! Thank you for this video!!! It's amazing and I can't wait to try it! I am WAY over thinking it! I need to be swifter and more sure in my strokes. I have that same filbert brush and for some reason it is one of my favorites!
This explanation was so helpful and now I know why my petals looked spike; I was beyond frustrated before. You broke it down so simply. It’s beyond frustrating when you love florals but so struggle to paint them or at least for me it is. Thank you and I know I would appreciate a “corrective “ series like this one was! I’m also headed to sign up for Patreon next!
Hi Ellen, I’ve been following you for years and am a Patreon member but loved this little recap of important tips and techniques! Thanks so much and I vow to practice more every day to improve my skills😂. I’d love more tips on adding loose finishing touches to landscapes … mine often times don’t look that realistic (like grasses, etc). Thanks again!
Thank you Ellen very informative tutorial, it looks like most of my brushes are long round so will have to buy two or three more and I will practice the brush strokes daily .Thank you for sharing with us x
Great tutorial Ellen , just what I needed as I’m out of practice , hope to practice more often ! Just a question regarding the brushes - I used a 10 Moderna as I didn’t have a Filbert .. is there much of a difference? 😊
This is a great tutorial and I thank you for it. I have a question about the “consistency “. When you were demonstrating with one color I suddenly had the thought that the butter, cream, coffee, tea is more about value than cream being thicker than coffee. For years I’ve been trying to figure out how coffee is “thicker”than tea. But when you showed it with butter coming straight from the tube and then on down the tea, I realized that coffee is “darker” than tea. And of course, to go from dark to light value you keep adding water. Tea being the lightest value. Do I have that right? Thank you again and I definitely will try the flower.❤
I don’t practice enough because every time I try to paint it looks nothing like what it’s supposed to. It looks like a child painted it. It looks like those Pinterest versus reality attempts. 🤦🏽♀️

Whenever I mess up I don't blame you as my instructor. Like you say, I go back to basics and experiment! It' fun to experiment with my scrap paper.

I cannot wait to try out my filbert and paint a chrysanthemum.
My painting is not crisp and clear? Help please. I enjoy your tutorials so much….practice more like you said🥰
When do you use a flat brush?
Academie paper is good for practice.
Ellen could you put the links fro the round brushes I can't find the round tip online
What is the type of brush your using for the 1st flower?
In description box - filbert
Hi..it's a philbert brush :)
Is your pallet plastic, or porcelain or what?
I agree crappy paper isn’t good for practice. If something comes out nice you wish you’d used better paper anyway.
I don’t practice enough because every time I try to paint it looks nothing like what it’s supposed to. It looks like a child painted it. It looks like those Pinterest versus reality attempts. 🤦🏽♀️
Very helpful! Thank you.
It was very helpful thanks!
Very helpful!!
