I think people coaching themselves is like people working on their own car. Some can, but would rather not; others can't, etc. Different personalities, I happen to agree with you, coaches aren't as important as people think, but then I have a friend who likes having a coach because she feels it gives her motivation. She's also an extrovert... that may be part of it.

Clearly you put a ton of time into this, so this is purely constructive feedback on an already excellent presentation/content - when you were talking specifics on set/rep progression week to week it was really hard to keep up with the salient point you were making in the examples you were giving, personally, if the numbers were on the screen clearly showing the delta between each week I think it would be easier to follow along.

A tip for the discipline section: I keep a dark ink pen at home, with which I mark down my exercises and sets. Then carry a blue ink pen with me in the gym with which I write down the weight and extra notes. That way I can't change things written down on the fly and I can review my gym notes as if I were getting them from a client.
What helped me most with powerlifting (not that I am super great or anything) is meditation - for various reasons. But the biggest one is probably that it helped me watch videos of myself more objective and listen to my body to fix mistakes before they become too serious!
danieljahn2027 I personally wouldn’t recommend it because it often spits out programs with 7x10 deadlifts and similar squat volume. I’d never personally program anything remotely close to that. However a thousand ways to skin a cat, to each his own.

Very, VERY interesting video. The point that resonated with me the most (I have to go back and redigest some of the technical elements) was the fact that you have to believe you're smart in order to coach yourself. After a recent back injury, my own sense of confidence has taken a beating, and now, as I'm coming back, I'm finding it harder than I did before my injury (which was not related to my programming style but rather to just plain carelessness) to get pumped up about what I'm doing. Exactly! It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy when confidence is lost. Decisions are often cut short under the assumption that it won't work anyways, and even source material is often skipped since you assume a non-expert can't handle it. It's important to be aware of limitations, but sometimes self-doubt is overly emphasized in the evidence based community. I'd rather be overly confident and then adjust vs being fickle and directionless.

Super helpful video! I've hit a plateau and trying to push past, I'm not really a powerlifter, I'm just a dude lifting heavy weights at home for fun. Currently at 350 bench 450 squat and 600 dl Hopefully by the end of next year I can up each by 25lb I just found your channel and you're very impressive I'm 6'2" 280lbs and yet you are easily stronger. I am a lifting enthusiast and I had an injury that forced me to quit lifting for many years (The most depressing and darkest years of my life for I didn't have an understanding of how pain worked). Then I decided to lift regardless of the pain then I learned about back pain recovery stuffs mostly from your channel and the Barbell medicine Team. Then I opted for rehab coaching from BBM crew which improved my self-efficacy a lot got me back to lifting fairly decent numbers recently. But then I realized that I want to really go through the entire process of lifting, so I am planning to compete in a powerlifting meet in the near future ( I am 27 as of now and want to do it before I Turn 30), not for the sake of competing but for the sake of going through the complete process of what it feels to lift under pressure especially during competitions. Your videos are really helpful for persons like me who really want to get into powerlifting. Thank you so much for these really valuable videos, Jonnie. Wish me good luck for my future meets. After 4 years I come back to your channel I was 17 you helped me hit so many prs before I gave up lifting I had 225 bench 315 squat and 405 deadlift at 165 within 3 months hopefully my older body will progress better . That 6 week program was awesome

I'm not completely serious about powerlifting but do it for fun at home which is why after looking at canditos 6 week i liked the set-up of it, enjoyed my first cycle which I started with a 10% reduction on all lifts. I simply am unsure how to approach the next cycle is all..

I have a pretty labour intense job working with reinforced steel so it takes its toll on my joints training and working, so much so I missed my first meet last weekend due to neck issues which is another reason why I decided to run Candito 6 week at a reduction and just cruise along until the next meet pops up.

My issues is I always slowly "ratchet up" something (maybe RPE, or maybe volume) such that I'm OVERDOING IT, for a good chunk of my cycle. I thought I had good discipline, but I actually need more discipline.
I've been dabbling with the idea of doing a video like this for some time now, but always felt it would come off as "cocky." Great video dude! This will definitely help a lot of people!
When you mentioned the pissed off looking coach standing next to the anxious lifter, I got so many ideas in my head. Lol. I just imagine a coach standing there thinking about how he will punish the lifter when he doesn’t meet expectations and then have the lifter standing next to him having a ptsd episode of what the coach has done to him in the past when he has failed. 🤔 💭 it’s punishing time. 😬
I cant remember the last time I saw someone on IG hit something as a single @8 for their heaviest single in prep for a comp and then hit a PR based off of that single in the meet, while not ever touching heavier than that @8 load in the gym. Ill see full out 1RMs taken in the gym and then the same lifters will go to the meet and either hit a 3rd attempt at a lesser rpe than their gym single or they will just be weaker from being under recovered from that max attempt. You'll ask them and they'll try to justify it like theres some magical stimulus to going to rpe 10 that will make them stronger in the meet which is the exact opposite lmao. Just generally on all comp and barbell variation lifts going above an 8-9rpe doesn't really yield a lot of benefits.

When you mentioned the pissed off looking coach standing next to the anxious lifter, I got so many ideas in my head. Lol. I just imagine a coach standing there thinking about how he will punish the lifter when he doesn’t meet expectations and then have the lifter standing next to him having a ptsd episode of what the coach has done to him in the past when he has failed. 🤔 💭 it’s punishing time. 😬

I cant remember the last time I saw someone on IG hit something as a single @8 for their heaviest single in prep for a comp and then hit a PR based off of that single in the meet, while not ever touching heavier than that @8 load in the gym. Ill see full out 1RMs taken in the gym and then the same lifters will go to the meet and either hit a 3rd attempt at a lesser rpe than their gym single or they will just be weaker from being under recovered from that max attempt. You'll ask them and they'll try to justify it like theres some magical stimulus to going to rpe 10 that will make them stronger in the meet which is the exact opposite lmao. Just generally on all comp and barbell variation lifts going above an 8-9rpe doesn't really yield a lot of benefits.
