The red tainted rooms, the zombie banging on the window in the background. And the eerie footage of the world suddenly falling to pieces by a massive outbreak on the tv screens. It truly doesn’t get more terrifyingly nostalgic than this!
This is still the most creative zombies menu in the entire series and the only time which unless you played the campaign confirms that Hudson became a zombie.
Wow this is actually pretty genuinely terrifying, especially knowing that Mason's sitting there completely defenseless, the videos and the interrogator possibly zombified are just telling you "hey, while you've been sitting there, the world's pretty much gone to shit and you're probably gonna die.”
The interrogator that suddenly turned into a mindless zombie and is trying to break in while you're locked in a chair, the theme, the screens showing what we used to believe was real footage of a zombie apocalypse... It all adds up to make the greatest menu of all time.
The displays changing between zombies, men undergoing testing, and soldiers in hazmat gear engaged in combat, all added to the unspoken horror that this ambiance generated before you'd even play.
Just imagine being in that situation being tied up in a chair in an interrogator room just to see the guy behind the glass starts punching it and doing weird and brutal movements and the TVs in the room shows soldiers being killed by disfigured people and being eaten while the room you are changes color (like the facility you’re in is like being attacked) and the light behind the door turns red (maybe there’s an alarm but the music covers it)

I like how they used footage from actual Cold War era experiments along with in game footage of Soviet Spetsnaz GRU attempting to contain or eradicate an outbreak. Sure, it's all fictional, but it seems plausible and it's actually pretty creepy.

Call of Duty Black Ops would always be the best Call of Duty game since then. When I click “Zombies”, it still gives me chills to play for a solo round. Especially how terrifying for the song, the TV screens, the maps, and the voices from Samantha. Good times before.

Imagine being in this situation; You are getting interrogated, and then the room changes to a red tint, your interrogator checks outside his room, all of a sudden, a red disfigured and bloody person jumps on him and he starts yelling for help, eventually he stops screaming. The interrogator now looks, and acts like the bloody person, the TVs by you suddenly show monsters attacking people, both from your side and the enemy side, meanwhile you are still strapped in the interrogation chair. That was this menu.
And when you look down you see Mason is a lot more scared than he normally is in the normal main menu he genuinely terrified of the sight Another thing I love about switching from zombie to the main menu and back again is you see the zombie leave and Hudson comes back just fine but than if you go back he becomes a zombie again as if this is something that's just going on in masons head he truly was fucked up by the interrogations he went through

It’s Friday during 2011 you got the weekend to yourself after a long week of school and you and the group decide to hop on BO1 Zombies during midnight NOSTALGIA!
The Glazing Eye BO4 has like exactly the same vibe as BO3. It was WaW and BO1 which had the mysterious, creepy, apocalyptic vibe and BO2 a bit too. BO3 and 4 are just stupid fucking aliens and weird magical staffs wielded by ancient superhero knights trying to save the universe. Blundell makes good maps but there’s no denying he completely assfucked the story like hell.
Playing zombies with friends when this menu came up was cool and exciting. Playing alone at 4am in the dark accidentally clicking zombies and the menu came up...😭😭
For reals. It felt like you were working in a secret lab and ordered to work on some secret weapon but something went horribly wrong and it turns regular people into flesh devouring monsters
A lot of people love BO2, and MW2. And I get it. Both great games and the nostalgia hits me so hard for both. But for me, this will forever be the greatest CoD and the greatest zombies.
I was terrified when I first saw this. It really gives a very creepy impression. There is footage of someone being locked in a chamber and tested on, you see the nova crawlers, zombies walking around in dark hallways and buildings. A burning helicopter crashing, people dying in a poisonous gas, people in gas masks firing indiscriminately, someone bing pinned down! That’s what really terrified me, I did not want to imagine what that person felt after that but then I realized that all of the previously mentioned footage except for the nova crawlers and zombies walking around is from the campaign. The person being locked in a chamber I believe is footage of someone testing out a respiratory device in complete vacuum. The burning helicopter crash is from a mission set in Vietnam, the people dying from poisonous gas if from the mission rebirth, the people in gas masks are spetznas fighters from the mission executive order, the person being pinned down is a bit of a mystery though. I never saw that in the campaign but one of the people doing it is a SOG so I would assume a Vietnam mission.
The only vietnam mission I saw was from Khe Sahn, as suggest. Those soldiers are not wearing shirts or uniforms and helmets due to the heat and also in that mission they were doing it as well piling bodies of dead buddies in previous battles
The person being "eaten" by the zombies is actually from the mission "Crash site". If you go to the tents where 2 soldiers are helping their wounded mate, you can tell the animation is similar when you load into zombies. I think Treyarch just put blood over it to make it seem they're zombies eating that person
Just listening to this music and looking at the TVs in the main menu, makes me feel like there is a real Zombie apocalypse actually happening in our world. It’s such a creepy yet nostalgic vibe!
This main menu was so creative, and very creepy for my younger self but the creepiness of it was why I loved zombies. Then they started adding weird shit and it lost its touch.
When Easter eggs were, well Easter eggs. I miss when surviving for a long time was more important than completing an easter egg. Getting the highest round you could get to gave zombies such a unique feeling.
The animation comes from the start of Crash Site where some medics are treating a guy before you get on the boat and he’s freaking out so they’re trying to hold him down. News to me and I’ve been playing since launch. Always thought Treyarch actually animated a guy getting eaten the fuck out of by zombies but there you go.
I also like that when it goes back to normal, zombie interrogator leaves and comes back normal, as if the entire Zombies Menu was just in Mason's head due to the immense torture he's gone through during the interrogation.
The memories man. Coming home from school and jumping on Black ops with your mates was elite. Will never forget when I found out you can break out off the chair and unlock a new map on the computer.
i remember as a kid i said "how bad can it be?" knowing i couldnt even sleep playing left for dead i tested my might pressed zombies heard the music sent a chilling shock down my spine turned left from the tvs and saw a fucking zombie i clicked exit so fast lol

A lot of video games lack this kind of passion. They could have just made a screen where you scroll down and press a button to join a match like most video games. But they went all out to create this creepy vibe and it made the universe feel real. It shows that even a main menu can steal the show.
I had a dream where the main menu was a secret map on zombies and you press both triggers on the controller while its at Zombies basically when you press them basically the zombie banging on the window jumps out of the window tries to eat you but you punch the zombie in the face and you pull out a m1911 and shoot the zombie in the face and you get out of the chair and you can explore the map you play as Alex mason in the map

I have never felt this nice before, I remember right when I was done with school I hopped right on black ops zombies. Me and my friends tried to get a high round in-game, the one thing I loved so much was when you switched it to campaign to zombies, just seeing everything turned into hell. My 11th birthday was the best. All night till 6 AM me and the boys played all night.. and stay up till 8 AM cuz we were to scared to go to sleep... Good times man... I wish I could go back to those great times.. I still play the game to this day.. but, It's not the same... Thank you actionvision for one hell of a childhood...
I'll tell you guys my first experience of call of duty zombies, I'm 16 today and this was probably 10-11 years ago. My dad was playing this game with his friends in the living room, I had to stay in the living room idk why, but I had to. They started playing Kino and that was the first time I got scared and I ran behind the couch. Of course, I couldn't play it because I was too dumb, but I started playing 3-4 years later. I played everything else except zombies (besides the arcade version) because it was still too scary. When I played alone, I thought that because the graphics were so old (in a good way) that it made it creepier. And when I got to round 6, I would just quit because the hell hounds and the announcer were too fucking scary that i would start to welch my trousers lmao. And of course, I never played Five cause it's even creepier and its hard af, I only played online because it made me feel more comfortable but when I was the only one left alive it was so scary that if I could i would just hand the controller to like my cousin or something. Anyways I think that black ops 2 had the last scary zombies in terms of maps and graphics and sound design, but black ops 1 killed it because every detail I said earlier aged like fine wine. I liked black ops 3 but it started getting so detailed and bright and colorful and so fast paced that it wasn't scary anymore. The only other thing that scared me was Extinction but that's different and it got old after a while. I bet that my story is probably similar to a lot of other people, but I typed this anyway as a tribute to how great activation was at making games back in the day.

I like how they used footage from actual Cold War era experiments along with in game footage of Soviet Spetsnaz GRU attempting to contain or eradicate an outbreak. Sure, it's all fictional, but it seems plausible and it's actually pretty creepy.

Call of Duty Black Ops would always be the best Call of Duty game since then. When I click “Zombies”, it still gives me chills to play for a solo round. Especially how terrifying for the song, the TV screens, the maps, and the voices from Samantha. Good times before.

Imagine being in this situation;
You are getting interrogated, and then the room changes to a red tint, your interrogator checks outside his room, all of a sudden, a red disfigured and bloody person jumps on him and he starts yelling for help, eventually he stops screaming. The interrogator now looks, and acts like the bloody person, the TVs by you suddenly show monsters attacking people, both from your side and the enemy side, meanwhile you are still strapped in the interrogation chair.

Another thing I love about switching from zombie to the main menu and back again is you see the zombie leave and Hudson comes back just fine but than if you go back he becomes a zombie again as if this is something that's just going on in masons head he truly was fucked up by the interrogations he went through

The Glazing Eye BO4 has like exactly the same vibe as BO3. It was WaW and BO1 which had the mysterious, creepy, apocalyptic vibe and BO2 a bit too. BO3 and 4 are just stupid fucking aliens and weird magical staffs wielded by ancient superhero knights trying to save the universe. Blundell makes good maps but there’s no denying he completely assfucked the story like hell.

I was terrified when I first saw this. It really gives a very creepy impression. There is footage of someone being locked in a chamber and tested on, you see the nova crawlers, zombies walking around in dark hallways and buildings. A burning helicopter crashing, people dying in a poisonous gas, people in gas masks firing indiscriminately, someone bing pinned down! That’s what really terrified me, I did not want to imagine what that person felt after that but then I realized that all of the previously mentioned footage except for the nova crawlers and zombies walking around is from the campaign. The person being locked in a chamber I believe is footage of someone testing out a respiratory device in complete vacuum. The burning helicopter crash is from a mission set in Vietnam, the people dying from poisonous gas if from the mission rebirth, the people in gas masks are spetznas fighters from the mission executive order, the person being pinned down is a bit of a mystery though. I never saw that in the campaign but one of the people doing it is a SOG so I would assume a Vietnam mission.
The only vietnam mission I saw was from Khe Sahn, as suggest. Those soldiers are not wearing shirts or uniforms and helmets due to the heat and also in that mission they were doing it as well piling bodies of dead buddies in previous battles
I assumed the person pinned down was getting eaten until i played the campaign and he wasnt just in pain
The person being "eaten" by the zombies is actually from the mission "Crash site". If you go to the tents where 2 soldiers are helping their wounded mate, you can tell the animation is similar when you load into zombies. I think Treyarch just put blood over it to make it seem they're zombies eating that person

This main menu was so creative, and very creepy for my younger self but the creepiness of it was why I loved zombies. Then they started adding weird shit and it lost its touch.
When Easter eggs were, well Easter eggs. I miss when surviving for a long time was more important than completing an easter egg. Getting the highest round you could get to gave zombies such a unique feeling.

The animation comes from the start of Crash Site where some medics are treating a guy before you get on the boat and he’s freaking out so they’re trying to hold him down. News to me and I’ve been playing since launch. Always thought Treyarch actually animated a guy getting eaten the fuck out of by zombies but there you go.

A lot of video games lack this kind of passion. They could have just made a screen where you scroll down and press a button to join a match like most video games. But they went all out to create this creepy vibe and it made the universe feel real. It shows that even a main menu can steal the show.

I have never felt this nice before, I remember right when I was done with school I hopped right on black ops zombies. Me and my friends tried to get a high round in-game, the one thing I loved so much was when you switched it to campaign to zombies, just seeing everything turned into hell.
My 11th birthday was the best.

I'll tell you guys my first experience of call of duty zombies, I'm 16 today and this was probably 10-11 years ago. My dad was playing this game with his friends in the living room, I had to stay in the living room idk why, but I had to. They started playing Kino and that was the first time I got scared and I ran behind the couch. Of course, I couldn't play it because I was too dumb, but I started playing 3-4 years later. I played everything else except zombies (besides the arcade version) because it was still too scary. When I played alone, I thought that because the graphics were so old (in a good way) that it made it creepier. And when I got to round 6, I would just quit because the hell hounds and the announcer were too fucking scary that i would start to welch my trousers lmao. And of course, I never played Five cause it's even creepier and its hard af, I only played online because it made me feel more comfortable but when I was the only one left alive it was so scary that if I could i would just hand the controller to like my cousin or something. Anyways I think that black ops 2 had the last scary zombies in terms of maps and graphics and sound design, but black ops 1 killed it because every detail I said earlier aged like fine wine. I liked black ops 3 but it started getting so detailed and bright and colorful and so fast paced that it wasn't scary anymore. The only other thing that scared me was Extinction but that's different and it got old after a while. I bet that my story is probably similar to a lot of other people, but I typed this anyway as a tribute to how great activation was at making games back in the day.
