Tunafish Sandwich (1924) on Sandwiches of History

- Really quickly, there is a misconception that the word “club” in a Club Sandwich is an acronym for “chicken and lettuce under bacon.” As nice as that would be it simply isn’t the case. The name stems from where the sandwich originated. Specifically the clubhouse. The exact clubhouse is up for a heated debate so I’m gonna leave that alone but it seems to have been created in the late 1800s. The reason I bring it up is because the Tunafish Sandwich from The New Butterick Cook Book (from the Cornell University School of Home Economics) in 1924, is essentially a club sandwich. Toasted bread, mayonnaise, lettuce, bacon…I mean, come on. But it is a tuna club sandwich which I think is an interesting twist on it. Plus, this recipe calls for salt, pepper, and lemon juice. Seasonings! Huzzah!

Was it George Carlin who asked "Why do we say tuna fish? You don't say chicken bird do you?"Anyway, how can you go wrong with tunafish and baconpig?
some pickled onions would've been a solid plus up as well. love tuna sammies in all their forms!
Oh good idea.
Plus it up with an extra slice of bread and a tomato for a full on club treatment
preserved lemon and capers!! ...avocado and candied jalapeños?? superb choices!!!
Minus the tomato and the third piece of bread, this is certainly a tuna club (which is awesome). Personally, I would have plussed this up with either anchovies or anchovy paste....or possibly a combination of both.
As soon as you lay down that bacon I saw those numbers on the horizon. I'm going to make that tomorrow.
Barry, the plus up was PERFECT!
Tuna club looks amazing
Ohhhh after that plus up especially this sandwich has me drooling. I love a good tunafish sando.
Alternative title: Mayonnaise with stuff on it 😆
Yeah, I balked at the first spread alone.
Spicy or vinegary to cut all the fat. That’s why there are tomatoes on clubs! Fresh, sweet, juicy.
Jalapeños a good move! I’d put some pickled or even raw red onion in there.
Thanks for the lunch idea
I wonder when the tomato slice became a popular sandwich ingredient in the US? I have read they were not eaten at all in some areas, because people thought they were inedible, as a relative to the Deadly Nightshade (excellent super hero name, btw) till the mid 1800's.
Only a thing amongst the rich. It was due to the pewter plates from which they ate. Pewter contains lead, and the acidic nature of the tomato leached out some lead.
This plus up was 🔥
Old Bay would be a great plus up here
Just found your channel. You are amazing
Thank you and welcome!
A sandwich based on my favorite fighting game stage of all time.
Butter, mayo x2, bacon, and plussed up with avocado - because there wasn't enough fat in the sandwich.
Looks absolutely delicious!
Albatross!
Cowboy candy! Leftover juice can be used to marinate meats or in BBQ sauce. Not sure it's a club, club needs that third piece of bread (and must be cut into four triangles).
I am one of the last to shy away from different fats on a sandwich and this one has quite a few in competition, but personally I could never acclimate my taste buds with canned tuna and butter...
must be the mayo on butter method that pushed it over the top.
Great video as always.
Thank you!
candied jalapenos?! Where do I purchase these marvellous-sounding creations?!
I make them from this recipe (I do half batches) www.foodiewithfamily.com/candied-jalapenos/#wprm-recipe-container-21170 or Trader Joe's sells them too.
Hey Barry, I work at a donut shop and one of the most requested “secret menu” items we have is a donut cut in half and served as a sandwich with sausage or bacon as the meat, egg and cheese. No I am not trying to kill you
I get that. Sounds pretty tasty but not something one should eat often (as you pointed out)
@@SandwichesofHistory the life support sammich
The sandwich seems fine but the tuna out of a jar bothered me.
If/when you do it again, would you change the bread? If so, what would you recommend? Sourdough for the tunafish?
Yeah that would be a solid choice
You can't tuna fish, but you can certainly tunafish!
I give up...
I think it's also, 'You can tune a piano, but you can't tuna fish'... 1978 🐟🙂
@@thewefactor1 I already did that one. :/
As opposed to tuna dog?
buttered with the mayo or butter and mayo? because iirc buttering was just generic putting condiments on it
Several of these old sandwiches he makes seem to have a sort of kneejerk butter application
🎉🎉🎉
The original BLT!
That tunafish was NOT canned. It was clearly jarred.
😂
You're making me question everything
@@Roddy556 If Barry is lying about the tuna, what else is he lying about? Are the plus ups even real?
Source please.
It was canistered, which use to be commonly shortened as canned
you make shaggy sandwiches from scooby doo lol
Thank you for reminding me to be "civil and respectful". This is a video about tunafish. I am not that easily enraged. Your face pops up and you warn us. You must think we're animals. If we're not to be trusted with tunafish, how can you support the Second Amendment? Thank God I was warned or I might work up a bit of a lather. Your warning worked, dammit!
I agree with the commenters who want tomato. Chopped eggs would be nice too. It was 1924. Not 1200 BC, but we have learned a thing or two since. They simply doubled and tripled up on the lettuce.
In closing, I will take your message of civility, respect and single file no talking to heart.
