I hadn't realised until looking into the background of the calls for Texan independence that Mexico had banned slavery and that leading Texas settlers wanted to hold onto slavery, which fed into the calls for Texan independance (along with Santa Anna's dictatorial approach). And that after being victorious, the 1836 Constitution of the Republic of Texas made slavery legal; forbidding any slave owner from freeing his slaves without the consent of the Texan Congress and forbidding Congress from making any law that restricted the slave trade- adding to some of the tensions between states when Texas became a part of the USA in 1845. Definitely a lot of knock on effects through history!
