- A delicious, bright, fresh whiskey cocktail, the Scofflaw is named after a word chosen to describe someone who ignored the American prohibition on alcohol.
Once again I'm joined by Fred Siggins, semi American and whiskey expert, to look at some of our favourite American whiskey cocktails and this one is right up there. It's bright & summery and like The Paper Plane, it's surprisingly refreshing for a whiskey cocktail.

Specs:
50ml (1 2/3oz)whiskey (Wild Turkey Rye)
25ml (5/6oz) dry vermouth (Noilly Pratt)
15ml (1/2oz) lemon juice
10ml (1/3oz) grenadine*
2 dashes orange bitters
Lemon twist garnish
*grenadine can be bought but to make at home simply bring equal parts pomegranate juice and sugar to the boil then reduce heat and allow to simmer until syrup consistency (around 10 mins). Adding a little pomegranate molasses and orange blossom water will help the depth of flavour.

I work in a pub down the great ocean road and we love your channel!
Great range of cocktails that use spirits that we have easy access to (unlike some of the other cocktail channels on youtube).
Please keep making these ;)
That’s honestly so great to hear- which pub?! I’d love to come visit for a cocktail at some point!
Great story . Not heard of this and as there's no sign of me stopping celebrating the end of Prohibition any time soon will look forward to making.
Looks Yums. Thanks for the history lesson and your opinions different ingredients.
Just discovered your channel and and absolutely love it!!👍👍.I was introduced to the scofflaw about 10 years ago and has since become a one of my favourites.Interestingly though over the years I have been very frustrated when I get the strangest looks when I ask for this drink at some supposed ‘real cocktail bars’. Then was told by a couple of bartenders from couple of awesome spots that I will refrain to name😜, on Brunswick st and on smith st, that one should often judge the skill and knowledge of the mixologist by the standard of their scofflaw😄
Haha it’s definitely not one of the common classics!
Gonna have to try this one over the weekend!!
This channel needs more credit
Thanks pal, slowly seems to be building so fingers crossed!
this is similar to the 12-mile limit. (1 oz white rum, 0.5 oz rye, 0.5 oz brandy, 0.5 oz lemon juice, 0.5 oz grenadine.)
i've had both side by side, both great and i can't decide which is better.
Ooh I haven’t tried that, will have to give it a go!
it's delicious! although i must say i love rye & prefer the scofflaw.
somehow the 12-mile limit isn't a muddled mess and actually works. it's also prohibition era
So I made this with Whipsaw Rye and it was pretty good.
Grenadine was with her recipe here as well and if you can't find orange blossoms fresh look in middle easter grocery stores, they have orange blossom extract. But add sparingly it can be over powering.
Definitely, you don’t want to be drinking pot pourri! Glad you enjoyed 😊
On a different note-Perhaps a course on making cordials, mixing syrups and odds and ends from scratch? It was so easy to make grenadine that I doubt I’ll ever buy it again. I saw you use a lighter color version on the El Presidente, what was different about that?
Oh brilliant!
By the way cara never misses a well made/deserved drink. Making heart's content and keeping people happy. Love your work. Good luck.
Thank you for the kind words!
Made one of these tonight. Very tasty, I loved the fruity tartness!
Aw cool! I’m glad you liked it 😊 very fun and fruity!
You guys have a good friendly chemistry. God I'm so lonely in this lockdown.
I’m sorry to hear that pal, plenty of other chats etc on here to keep you company 😊
@@BehindtheBar sure. Btw your channel is the best to people like us who are total newbies to making cocktails at home. Other people just show recipes and we don't understand anything.
Rudra P that’s so nice to hear, my aim is to make is accessible and I also just love talking about this stuff anyway! If there’s ever anything you don’t understand let me know 😊
@@BehindtheBar I would love it if you make a video on cocktails with dark rum. Here in india, we have a dark rum called Old Monk, which is super cheap but good quality(probably because of the huge production of sugarcane), and people here just love it. It's like an intense cult following. But there's not many cocktail videos on dark rum. Hope we get one from you.
Ah cool, I haven’t heard of that- may not make it out of India? But luckily for you we have a rum extravaganza coming up in the next few episodes!
Something about Ms. Devine pronouncing “SCOFFLAW,” in that MELLIFLUOUS accent of hers, just DOES it for me! 😍😍😍
Forgive me my American “brashness,” Ms. Devine.
Slainte! 🍸😉
BTW, excellent drink, with ingredients ANY serious “MIXOLOGIST,” like myself would have on hand!
Again…, SLAINTE! ☘️🥂😊
The problem is you release these vids in the morning - and now I'm thirsty! :-)
Breakfast cocktails!
Not really a problem. An opportunity.
@@BehindtheBar I've never been much of a cocktail man, other than martinis and Manhattans. I usually prefer my spirits neat. But if you were my bartender, I would simply belly up to the bar and say, "Surprise me."
Nothing wrong with a cocktail for breakfast, as long as you don't have to drive or operate heavy machinery, lol, is there such a thing as a breakfast cocktail? Hmmm
@@little_billy Breakfast cocktails? Bloody Mary. Screwdriver. Mimosa. Bellini. Tequila Sunrise. Irish coffee. Fuzzy Navel. That's just the classics.
Yum
She looks like effy from skins 👍
Have you ever done LA Louisiane?
Not yet but great drink!
Having a hard time, basically impossible to find 'rockn rye.' Any thoughts?
I’m not sure I know what you mean?
@@BehindtheBar its rye whiskey with Fruit and horehound candy in the bottle, but I'm unable to buy it anymore. Its called rock n rye.
R,
Patrick
She's giving eyes of "I know how to do this better than you but suuure" Also the 'hasn't been behind the bar in a while' comment got me dead.
😂
It was not illegal to drink alcohol during prohibition actually. But it was illegal to produce, sell, and distribute it. If you owned alcohol prior to it starting, you could drink it. 👍
Ah fair point!
Is that Steve the Bartender? I think he is in disguise with that beard and haircut.
Haha all Aussie blokes look the same!
The word "scofflaw" was not invented during American prohibition. It is an old English word, and could have been used to describe Robin Hood back in that day.
Curious. What’s your source for this because many sources suggest otherwise? Perhaps it was ‘invented’ as Fred suggests but had already been in use prior but fallen out of use again?
