      @@SO-rq3pm I think there's a misconception here about introverts. I know many people who are introverts but have no problem with public speaking or being confident. Tony is more of a shy person and private, hence, he's not comfortable in front of crowds.

      Cheung has a well-proportioned face. Thank goodness she hasn't put herself under the knife to enlarge her eyes or other grotesque plastic surgery that is so prevalent amongst starlets all over Asia these days, making them all look exactly the same. (The one most prominent change Cheung did, was to give herself a double-eyelid and a more straightened nose.)

    Maggie still looks young and beautifull back then. One of the actress that never fails to impress me. Her act always stay in my mind especially if the film quality is good. It's a pity that maggie quit film early in 2004. I grow up watching many of her films so watching her in this video brings memory back. ;-)

    The Japanese short story that inspired *"In the Mood for Love"* is titled "**I'm a Cat**" (我輩は猫である, *Wagahai wa Neko de Aru*) by Natsume Sōseki. Specifically, it's the interaction between two neighbors in one part of the novel that influenced director Wong Kar-wai in his conceptualization of the relationship between the two main characters in *"In the Mood for Love."*
    Although *"I'm a Cat"* is not primarily about romantic love, its themes of human interaction, social observation, and subtle exchanges played a role in the development of the film’s atmosphere.

    • @nephronpie8961
      @nephronpie8961 3 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      Maggie was raised in both Hong Kong and Britain which is probably why she has an British accent. As for Tony, since he grew up in British Hong Kong which was a British colony till 1997, safe to say he was exposed to a lot of English throughout his life, unlike in mainland China.

    • @yalekho5040
      @yalekho5040 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Maggie moved to England when she was 10, went to high school there. That is why she speaks fluent English. In Hk, English was the only official language till 70s. The HK government also set up the rule that every child must attend schools up to 14 years old, at least. Most may not speak fluently but have the basic English knowledge. When the HK movies started to participate in the International Film Festivals. The movie companies start to fund the actors to learn speaking English.

    • @JiFan
      @JiFan 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nephronpie8961 That's not it though. Plenty of the other people (probably 90%) of his generation speak with a very 'Hong Kong accent', which is very discernible and sometimes indecipherable.. the only ones who speak with a standard Brit accent are those who lived in the UK and studied there or who went to International schools maybe. For instance, the actress Jessica Hsuan went to Imperial College in the UK and speaks with a standard English accent that could even pass off as Singaporean, similar to Maggie.
      So it's not about HK teaching folks English (I don't know why you would bring in China when we're talking about HK actors here? It's a useless comparison..). Everyone learns English in school, yes, but not all of them speak as well as them (Maggie, particularly). And that's a compliment..! 😊

    days of being wild was the best and speak on real emotion/topics. others are so sloppy and it shows. overrated like other directors that are "known for their style", they just keep repeating their 'style'. hard to tell also because the subtitles in the films are also bad. so english speaking viewers reading the subtitles get a romantic view of the films, but that is not present in the original language nor in the acting itself. seems to me people are just wowed by the colors and the foreignness of it, aka the "wong kar wai style".
    it makes sense this whole film is just an iteration on that short japanese story they said he was inspired by. not much meat in in the mood for love or 2046. but sure it looks colorful and one of them has a good soundtrack. basically what i heard in the commentary of chungking express. ever since the success of that film, wkw just wanted to emulate it over and over again apparently. but that film, while great for being whimsical among other things, was successful through the soundtrack and faye wong. so these two other films of the trilogy are just repeats of that, without the magic of faye wong found in chungking express. she was in 2046 but had a lesser role and much less charm.
    and while maggie cheung and tony leung are handsome and beautiful actors, they are not the best acting wise. maggie cheung is like jennifer connelly, they are stars off looks, with very poor acting chops. tony has a great face, but much similar. he's just the poster boy for wkw. like other directors that have their favorite actors that they always include because they give off a vibe off their look.
    i actually find leslie cheung from days of being wild much more of a natural talent. he was awesome.. but if you read the english subtitles, the emotions do not come through, while every other line was also slightly wrong. in the mood for love and 2046 subtitles make it sound more 'sophisticated' than it actually was, while the original dialogue was very dry.
