Being broken into for the third time requires you as a business owner to 1 contact your police dept and ask what the area cruiser is doing on the late night shift? DEMAND BETTER ATTENTION TO YOUR BUSINESS.
2 Get on the agenda for your local city council meeting AND EXPLAIN THAT THIS IS THE 3RD TIME YOU HAVE BROKEN INTO AND DEMAND THAT SOMETHING BE DONE.
If this meeting is broadcast on tv the council won't like a businessman complaining of 3 BREAK-INS. Without the police making an arrest.
3 Have your alarm tied into a 24 hour alarm company that will notify the PD and you.
By the way the noise won't stop breakers they will have several minutes to steal as much as they can carry.
4 Silent alarm after being tripped gives PD time to respond.
Take it from a retired police sergeant

It's not true actually. Some criminals are actually really really smart. They turn to crime often when they're not being challenged enough intellectually and get bored. My younger brother was like that. Too smart for his own good. Got him into alot of trouble. Many criminals are like that, they want the challenge to do something someone hasn't done before or better than the last guy did...and get away with it.

I live in Edmonton. Who says Alberta doesn't have rats? The bad guys stole our truck with my son's baby seat. They have no scruples and work neighborhoods over like farmers harvesting crops. A man jumped to his death in front of LRT and losers watching it happen scooped up his backpack. A family friend had his work van stolen just before Christmas. They took his tools and dumped the damaged truck near Hobema. With years of hard earned, specialized tools missing he was forced out of business. There's little Canadian law will do and insurance doesn't recover trust. Get a safe and WHEN they come back they will roll the store like spoiled children upset that the goodies are gone. Hopefully the contractor can keep them out and Alex in business.

This breaks our hearts that people would do this to you. That being said from the video you showed us, the smaller person was a female. And it looks like they have been in the store before. So you have to say to yourself who has been around that is a male and female couple looking in cases asking about trading cards and looking around for cameras or looking around at the ceiling. Also I know you don't want to think this but it might be "friends". Not close friends but people who come in the store often asking questions starting up conversations maybe even buying small things. What drink did they take from the drink cooler? That might be your clue. If it's something they like drinking and they come in there often. We so hope you find these thieves.

It was exciting to see your adventure clearing out & restoring the Potter house to its former usefulness, dignity, & glory days....exciting to see your fulfillment of your dream of a historical period general store, and the fun restoring it and improving it, and lovingly filling it with treasures to sell & share with others.....then, crying with you both when your wife Melissa’s Dad passed suddenly and alone, because of Covid. Then to have to see you have to deal with this 3 times over, is heartbreaking! But, know that you are loved and admired by many many people who see the kind decent hardworking person your are. ...and celebrate with you all your efforts and adventures and making it possible to preserve bygone days and bring back treasured memories.
On a different note, I just wanted to suggest maybe having a small old table & couple of old chairs for some of your regulars to come sit and chat (chew the fat) & maybe play a game of checkers, (whittle? I owned a gas station in Grande Prairie and I always said if it's not nailed down, tied down or screwed down some ass is going to try and steal it. People couldn't figure out why the tire pressure gauge was 18 inches long with a 2 ft chain and huge ugly bolts welded to it. It was too big and ugly to steal. We were broken into three times, they tried to remove a 500 lb safe (that was empty), they broke into a till that had been left open (steal the coin but don't damage the register) . I had a home that was broken into and you feel so violated. You have to do everything you can to get some sense of security back. Hang in there, it does get better.

My father had a gun shop in a not so great part of town. Over the 30 years it was open it was broken into 5 times. It was the cleanup and doing inventory that was hard part. After every break-in we would make changes to the security of the shop. We finally got it to a point where it wasn't worth the effort of breaking in. By the time you could get inside the cops would be rolling up. Its frustrating but in the end you will have the upper hand.

The only other option you have now, is removable shutters. You've been marked as a target among the thieving community, something that happens even here in Europe. The police is clearly useless.
You put those in place when you leave and you take them off when you work. You could store them into the shed, so they can be as stout and strong as you need. It won't affect the way the building looks or not, because this is a thing that was done in the past too. When i was a kid, in my town, despite it being a capital, there were plenty of shops that had either thick, 9 mm rolling metal (the rhombus pattern) shutters or straight up western hardwood ones that, like i said got removed when the store was functional. Most of those were covered in adverts for Cola Cola and other such things.
When you can't rely on your gov to help you in any fashion, which is the case here, you have to step up the things that are unpleasant for you. And unfortunately, the ultimate is closing shop. I don't think you're there, i think you have it in you, to try again. But you can't rely on cameras or the people you pay with your taxes to protect your property, so you have to do things the best you can within the confines of the law.

Alex, I'm so sorry to hear about all of the break-ins. I know just how you feel. 14 years ago, I moved a very successful business from Los Angeles back into my hometown in rural Pittsburgh. I bought my old elementary school, which was in a sad state of decay, spent over $200,000 to renovate and save it. The idea was to bring a business to an old zinc mining town that had since fallen into hardtimes and, sadly, lots of drug activity. The townsfolk was not only NOT welcoming or interested in learning a new skill, the building was broken into so many times that it seemed they were stealing everything as fast as we were rebuilding. After so many times, I gave up and literally walked away and have never returned. I can't even bear to go back into the building. It was such an emotional and upsetting experience. I lost everything. I mention this only to let you know that what you are feeling is understandable and normal, and I admire.and encourage you to."keep on." I wish I had that fortitude, but I don't.

Hello Alex. I watched your video last night and was very sad to hear you were broken into again. I hope you don’t shut down your shop. Since being told of your TH-cam channel by my sister in law in Winnipeg, watching your videos has been one of the very few bright spots in this miserable year. My wife lost her 29 year old son at the end of March and this on top of Covid 19 and all the crazy stuff happening in the world has made this year one of the worse ever. Your videos are full of hope with no malus towards others, and watching you collect treasures and fix up houses & cars take us away from all our troubles. I worked as a Security Guard for 24 years and dealt with people at their worse. Towards the end of my career, I became very cynical and it took me nearly 10 years after I retired to see the good in people. It would be a great pity if all these break ins make you cynical as well. Yes by all means do what you can to secure your shop but never forget that most people are good and it is a few jerks who make it hard on everyone else. God bless and I look forward to your next TH-cam adventure.

Focus on the "I'm Pissed Now" emotion in you!! Let that lead you, while you fortify the building! Don't let the hurt emotion surface, and crumble you. You are full of strength and character! You got this!

Notice how hurt he was at the beginning and how buoyed he was at the end? That's a snapshot of how people process dealing with anger. You don't need to be angry to have resolve. You are correct in assessing his character, and he will do what's best for him.

I knew about one other break-in, but didn't know this was the third. Maybe instead of a contractor to help secure the building you could hire a professional security service to advice you on protecting your place. They may even have experience with heritage structures.

I was surprised to hear this was 3rd break-in. I missed details of the 2nd one. The car break-ins in my area have risen dramatically this year, as is porch pirating. We know you don't want to compromise the store's vintage appearance, but a mighty fortress is now called for.

People really can be the lowest of the low, I'd definitely agree that that's a female and then a male who broke in, and they knew where they were going so have been in before, probably only recently. Might be worth looking back through the CCTV in the days leading up if you haven't already. Chin up and keep pressing on :)

I love some of the ideas folks had about the high decibel alarms and strobe lights. I’d definitely look into a guard dog too. I’m so sorry this happened to you. You’re such a great guy and it saddens me that this keeps happening to you. Have you submitted your video to the TV stations to show to help catch these thieves?

When you picked them up on your security camera they were covered up aware they were on camera while they helped themselves to your inventory. They will be back! They appeared younger be prepared for them next time they drop by. Get creative!

By creative I didn't mean alligators manning the store but boy would they be surprised. I mean ways to cut down your security cost while you secure your place. I'm positive you can do it.

Alex, I'm grateful that you've decided to not let this "mark the end" of something you love doing and have worked so hard to maintain. I discovered your channel when you did the Potter House series and that alone told me what you and your wonderful family are made of. Keep that light shining brightly that emanates so naturally from you. This sad event has already made you a wiser person and that is something that no one can ever take from you. Much love to you and your family and all your friends, always! You are an inspiration to me, thank you.

My uncle is going through this currently at his bike shop. Maybe roller shades on the inside tastefully disguised. Doors? Hoping you strong Canadians build some strong steel doors and secure frames to secure your store.
