I saw her and her brother Michael at Pine Knob here in the Detroit area back in the early 70's. I was really impressed with the stage show Michael put on, he was playing a flute and would swing it toward the stage floor and big sparks would fly, looked really cool! Suzi was the headliner and I really liked her sound and show too...

When I was stationed in Baumholder, Germany during the early 70's, I ran the company lounge/bar we built upstairs across from the day room. Basically, that floor was the r&r part of the barracks. Suzi was well like up there. Her songs were play on our jukebox a lot. Especially 48 Crash and Can the Can. I got home, and no one had even heard of her.

I think Suzi Quattro had lots of success in America. She had a very successful single called Stumbling In, which was a collaboration with Chris Norman from the English glam rock band Smokie. She was also a huge influence on both Joan Jett and Susanna Hoffs.

Yeah, she influenced many, but the point of this video is that she was not so successful in America. Most Americans do not know she is. Most Americans (of a couple generations) know Susanna Hoff & Joan Jett

She had great success here in Germany! I was a great fan back in the day as well as of The Sweet. Of course I had Can the Can as a single in my collection.
Who cares about the critics. She had and obviously still has great fun in what she did and continues to do. And we as teenagers did party along with her leather looks...

It is a mystery why she never broke big in the US. I enjoyed your video and thanks for the information.
I remember first seeing her, but not knowing who she was, on Happy Days. Just a few years ago I saw a rerun episode with Suzi and that got me to looking her up and learning more about her. I really had never heard anything or seen anything on her through all those years since Happy Days.
I was talking with a friend in the UK a few years ago that brought her up. It got me interested again and I started finding some of her music. He told me that America got Joan Jett and Europe got Suzi Quattro :-)
    Keep up the good work!

She was on Happy Days as Leather Tuscadero the little sister of Pinkie Tuscadero -so because she didn’t have a lot of visual exposure in the music industry I think people who knew her from Happy Days just confused her as being a TV musical character

In her documentary her former ex lead guitarist and husband said that they when they were in the US touring in 1974 they would travel all over to the radio stations heaps of them in the states and some comments were made if you keep providing us with cocaine then we will play your records
They never took her seriously as a bass player and as a woman rocker in the US as it was such a male dominated arena at the time. Also in her documentary Suzi said that her UK record label magnate Mickie Most released her albums there but he kept changing distribution deals so Suzi once said they could never get traction. It was never meant to be that Suzi's early hits made it in the US. If you look at a lot of the glam acts from the UK. They never had hits in the US some did but it mostly never transferred over.

This certainly shows the difference in musical tastes between USA & other English speaking countries. If Suzi Quatro already had #one hits in England & Europe for a few years, and then she was hit on Happy Days for several episodes, (a #1 show in America). That would certainly boost anyone’s career. Yet she still was barely known in America.

    • @Into_the_void64
      @Into_the_void64 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

The US was a weird market musically in the 70s. We didn't really know who the good rock bands were, unless we scoured the magazine stand, bought records in music sections of stores that had a "cool" album cover, and then word of mouth as a result. A few prog rockers caught on, but big radio kept us in disco, motown or pop. The fans figured it out themselves. Only way I knew of Suzi was by an older friend (I'm 59, he was three yrs older) I shopped and traded cool music with, before Suzi was on Happy Days. Rarely would there be someone on late night tv.

@@Into_the_void64 i’m the same age as you. I don’t think we had problems knowing good rock bands in the 70s Sure, there was different types of genres, rock ‘n’ roll & disco and singer songwriters.

You can trace this back to the blues---often what America discards as rubbish, Europeans embrace! Bands who have no prayer of making it in their own American backyard often find surprising cult followings in far off places like Sweden and the Czech republic. You find it surprising that someone in the world likes your music, and it often is somewhere you never expect.

Weren't Joan Jett and her performing/ recording about the time?
IF she was born of the "Detroit Audience", as informed as it was -
" There ain't enough room in this town for both Suzi Quattro and Joan Jett..." and Joan got more air- time on radio, so Suzi came- in "2nd place"...

I had one friend at the time who liked Suzy Quatro and the rest of us wondered why. She was way too pop and commersh for the general taste of my other friends and I. I even paused this video to have a re-listen to Can on Can and she is very bubblegum at the end of the day. Obviously Stumblin' In was just straight up Top 40. She didn't seem genuine to rock. Seeing that she eventually did traditional Broadway tells me she was more about being on a stage than she ever was about rock and roll.

Well i can think of a few reason she never made it big in the US.
She was too retro. The US likes the newest next thing and her music had too much of a throw back vibe to it. Europe and other countries like older American culture , music and artist. Thats why many older acts went to Europe once their limelight dimmed in the US. It was rock bands from England that turned many US kids onto older blues men like Howlin Wolf for example.
Her instrument of choice was a bass. If she would have used a lead or Rhythm guitar I think that would have helped her become more popular.
Her song choices again had too much of a retro vibe. If she would have done some more edgy songs. More of her songs were one part rock and one part bubble gum.
You know though she always did what she liked and what songs she liked. She never tried to go mainstream on purpose and just keep on going to her own beat. I respect that and it seems to have gave her longevity. She never burned out and seems to have a good time and enjoy life and accepts what she is. You can like her or not it does not bother her in the least.
Her influence on women in rock and roll can not be denied.

To me Happy Days ruined her. I'm an opinionated music fan and I'll admit, a lot of my views are extremely anal. Something about Happy Days really turned me off, at the time that it was most popular. I to this day wouldn't watch the reruns. I just plain never liked the show. In my rebellious young rock mind, Leather Tuscadero was a total sell out. Especially at a time that was on the brink of punk and new wave. Which sucked me in like a giant vortex.
