- The Madden NFL games used to be awesome, even comparable with the great NFL 2K5. The Ultimate Team, or MUT, came and ruined everything. Because of how profitable underage gambling is, EA stopped paying attention to the rest of the game, which is why it's in the state it's in now. That, and the exclusive license with the NFL. Ugh. Franchise mode will likely never be good again. Madden NFL 20 sucks

After DECADES of buying Madden every year, and being sucked into Ultimate Team for the last 6 years, I finally quit and traded in Madden 20.
I was playing in practice mode to work on some routes and while in replay mode I noticed the stands for the practice field still had the Madden 19 logo on them......they didn't even bother to change it when they were copy/pasting the code from last year's game.
I have never felt like more of a tool, or more disappointed in myself. It was sickening.
I bought every madden sence 2001 but the last two years I didn't buy in mut 15 and 16 I spent over 3500 all together never pulled nothing good fuc madden

@@STEELGMBL i started played madden with madden 96 and enjoyed it played in local tourtaments...i got every madden until madden 13....online gaming was fun until the micro transactions and the glitches where people who you know arent really madden gamers beating me and other guys and girls i met in madden forums who were way better than me and these kids would run the same plays and use cheats and hacks to beat anyone...it became about how to just spend cash to easily beat anyone and not real competitions...it stopped being really competitive for the og madden gamers and then mut just made it worse....
I’m frustrated with my younger self for not savoring the great ncaa and madden games. I didn’t understand how lucky I was with the great madden and NCAA games until they want down this dark path. What a joke of a company EA is and It’s sad but I doubt I will ever buy another madden again.

I have a friend who didn’t start playing Madden until 16 and whenever I say how trash madden is now he always says I’m overreacting and it’s not. Then when I bring up all the old features that’s not in the game he says that’s irrelevant and nobody cares about that stuff. These companies already have people by the balls who just settle for just playing online matches instead of a full football experience that they had damn near 20 years ago. It’s so frustrating

Kam Jinnah the problem is balance. While yeah stuff like create a fan was definitely extra. Most of that stuff wasn’t. We’ve just settled for less. Also Madden has always been a feature heavy arcade game. Since madden 13 it has essentially become a 3 mode super arcade game lol
You see I hadn't played madden until madden 17 and I love franchise mode and is basically the only reason I would play because its where your decisions actually make a difference. Its also fun to manage your own team.

Yeah the novelty is pretty cool but after the first couple times you just end up skipping it anyway. I dont need some sort of fantasy game where im pretending to be an nfl manager. I just need a game with good gameplay. Which unfortunately madden is regressing in as well.
If you replaced every mention of Madden to FIFA in this video, you'd have an identical story. I'm pretty sure UT was borrowed from the official Uefa Champions League game in (roughly) 06/07. FIFA hasn't improved for years and they've learned on UT to draw people in. They even use the same engine as Madden.

I've been on this band wagon since they stripped out play creation into the PSP version of the game. EA has always been interested in money over game play and only ever produced a good same because they had competition. No more competition, no more good games.

My friends brother took his dads credit card and spent over 5k on ultimate team and I dont think he ever got his money back. That was just 1 of the multiple times he had done this. If you have to be 18 years old to gamble irl, you should be 18 to be allowed to gamble in video games. Which means madden either becomes M for mature, or they go back to making an actual good football game.

Butt Pounder there’s a larger fan base for mut than you really think. In this day of age it’s about content in you4 game. That’s at least something mut adds. Also they complained about madden as a whole not just mut. Xfactors are stupid and that’s not just in mut. If this game didn’t have mut 2k would out sell it or at least the amount of people would tremendously decline once 2k came out.
And don’t get me started on the current soundtracks. They’re garbage.
I still go back and listen to the old soundtracks, although I don't know if this one is actually EA's fault or more that most music is bad nowadays.
Yep, the music blows... which is why I turn off the music soundtrack off, ever since Madden 16 I can't stand it anymore. It's ALL rap and R&B and nothing else, used to be a good mix of everything but not no more. I can play a list of songs from TH-cam if want music while I'm gaming so Madden music is so unnecessary.

The sad part(s) about this to me is: 1. 2k would most likely make fantastic NFL games if the were still allowed to.
2. I see videos like this EVERY SINGLE YEAR, practically begging this player base to boycott the game, or at the very least boycott ultimate team for the reason you mentioned... and yet, here we are... it never changes. I'm sick of it as well man, entirely sick of it, but I just have given up hope that it will change, at least overnight.
I would explode if 2k was allowed to make a football game, and more of they made it with the same gameplay quality of their NBA titles. The NBA titles aren't perfect and usually have their cheese, but the depth is still there and it's still fun
The collective bargaining agreement is up after this season the license is up for grabs again I believe where developers can bid in

chizelhead71 I’m not really sure I never played the first ones on computer in late 80s first I played was on genesis when the nfc and afc was setup a lot different. So in 94-95 I think they had all the teams but old cities and the original in 88 I don’t think they had all teams or even right players. I was 8 in 88 and my family couldn’t afford a computer back then.

i remember it. The first few years werent great, they were like the football equivalent to R.B.I. baseball or bases loaded with no real player names. I remember about madden 95 or 96 is where it really started to get good back then with classic teams like '66 packers '85 bears etc. I wish they still had teams like that it would be so damn rad.

As a madden player who has only played madden since 16, thank you for shining light on the situation. You tubers like you are the reason I know what I have been missing. I have always noticed madden seemed to get boring really fast, and now I know why. I never played ultimate team, and I’m blessed that I haven’t decided to try it.
I guess I’m happy I bought this used off of a fellow chap for $5 instead of $60. Can’t imagine paying $60. The game isn’t even deep enough to drown in.

Another major issue is how the top 100 players in every mode are filled with dc glitchers. Guys with hundreds of wins, no losses and not a single td or point scored. Ea refuses to ban them or do anything, and you can watch their stats go up every week. My first time back on madden in years and I swear I am never buying another madden as long as I live ✌️(from a legitimate top 100 player). I hope ea goes bankrupt

Mut is deeper than people honestly realize. Even spending money you have to have the skill and the ability to make plays. You dont just buy the team and win. Ive destroyed people who had high 90 cards talked shit on me before the game and end up rage quitting before half time. You have to develop and use the training to construct chemestries between your players to boost stats. Which training and coins cannot be bought with real money. Only card packs. I just got my team to a 90 and have spend a little money in the game and have been playing since launch.

My Ultimate Team experience:
I’ve been playing Madden 20 on and off since its release. It’s been alright. Frustrating at times but also very fun at times. I start getting back into football in general, watching more NFL and getting into the new XFL. I began watching old highlights of Bo Jackson and Marshawn Lynch and Deion Sanders and my other favorite explosive players. I decided I wanted to see if I could play with those guys in Madden through the only mode I could: Ultimate Team. I played a few challenges, got a few free players, etc etc. Eventually, I start a head to head game and get ready to play my first online opponent. My team is 75 overall since I just started. So I get everything going, game loads up, and it shows the top 3 players on each team. I’ve got a 90 overall Kyler Murray and a couple 90 overall DEs from the early challenges. He has a 98 overall Michael Vick, 99 overall Lawrence Taylor, and 99 overall Eric Dickerson. First play of the game, I kickoff. He gets up to about the 30 before I hit him. He shoves my tackler to the ground, reverses across the whole field, and scored a TD. He kicks off. I return the ball from his kickoff, and my returner fumbles it when he’s hit. The guy returns in for a TD and then runs a fake PAT for 2. Next drive, I don’t fumble, and I manage to get a respectable drive down the field by throwing quick passes since all he does is blitz (which still works half the time since Lawrence Taylor just breaks through the line and hits my QB before he throws to the receiver I’ve been holding the button for since I snapped it). So I get into range of a 40ish yard field goal. Decent kick accuracy, but my kicker sucks and shanks it. He returns it for a TD after breaking another tackle. At this point I’m down 22-0 and it’s been 2 minutes. I get the ball again, get a decent drive to about midfield, and have to punt. Not caring at this point, I run a fake punt for 17 yards. Surprisingly, I have enough time to get the throw off. I even get a good throw right into the hands of a wide open receiver across the first down line. But he just drops it. No contact or anything, he just drops it. So he has the ball, he runs a run play, and I get my first tackle. That’s pretty hype. So then, he starts using jukes with his 99 overall Eric Dickerson and breaking tackles and my guys are just bouncing off of him. Now he just starts being a tool and diving every time he had an open TD. As soon as he starts lining up to take a knee every play (in the first half), I quit. I’m not going back. And that’s my Ultimate Team experience.
And that’s why this game sucks now. Sorry about your experience. I haven’t played/bought Madden since 10. They dumbed down everything... except graphics(whoopty-doo) Too easy to draft A potential players. I’m still playing NCAA 12 on 360. Haven’t looked back since. It’s now just a stupid arcade game for kids... I’ll play NFL Blits if I want arcade.

You nailed the point with 2k. I bought 2k this year for the first time since like 2014 and it blows me away how much further ahead it is (based on presentation, gameplay, franchise) than any other sports game out there. They really do make sure their game appeals to all types of players.
I also hate the direction Madden has gone in with MUT a primary focus but I feel MUT has uses within Franchise Mode that EA has not tapped into yet. If you own Elway, Marino & Kelly cards, having the option to import them into a Custom Draft Class is a big plus IMO. Placing them on current teams in the main menu then starting Franchise Mode, IE Ray Lewis & Ed Reed on the current Ravens, if you own a Vick MUT card, put him on the Bengals and see how the QB duel of Lamar vs Vick plays out inside your Franchise Mode.
Now the issue comes with MUT coins and real money being used to buy them. If MUT coins could be earned within Franchise Mode(IE winning a Super Bowl gets you 100 coins) then people have incentive to play Franchise Mode to get coins and now people don't have to use real money to buy MUT cards and can play another mode within Madden to earn them. The result? MUT crowd is playing Franchise and Franchise players are buying cards to use legend players/coaches to enhance their franchise experience. It's a win-win situation for EA but for some reason they don't do this.

I'm absolutely SHOCKED people even considered playing ultimate team. Especially in those early years of it where you would literally pay money for "packs". Franchise mode had me fantasizing over the NFL season and Madden completely ignored it. People who actually cared about UT seriously disappoint me...
A returning vet playing Ultimate Teams is a no brainer. Old school vs the new or both. MUT 23 is goated. I started on Madden 1998. Played the shit out of it till 2007. Got a 92 overall FTP squad on Ultimate Teams. Madden 23 is 🔥🔥🔥 Especially with field sense added.

Amen! I can relate SDS. I just bought a PS3 after 10+ years of not playing Madden, and i can tell you I totally agree. I am playing NCAA12, Madden 12 for the rest of my life.
I have a 90 overall ultimate team and havnt spent a penny 🤷🏻♂️ I also work 40+ hours a week. It's just a grind like any other game.
I started on Madden 13 for Xbox 360 but used to play the old NCAA games on my PS2. I’m a big Notre Dame fan and the 2008 NCAA game is by far my favorite ever football game. If only I hadn’t broken that machine. I’d still be playing that game.

Spent 50$ on Madden 20 ultimate team, it was a gift card so i really didnt see the problem. A few days pass by and now they have better limited edition higher overall cards and they want you to buy them, its crazy. Luckily i have a sense to put things down, and now find more fun in playing online h2h with real rosters

I was once talking to a friend a played halo with back around the time ultimate team came out. Him and I both played madden, and we played each other a few times. We didn't play madden together much because he *only* played ultimate team, and I never did. One time he convinced me to start one and play him, and all of his players were either hall of famers, or current superstars. I asked him if he was spending money on it, and I swear to god, he said "Nah not real money, just microsoft points". Completely serious, not joking at all. He honestly didnt see it as spending realy money since it was labelled as microsoft points. the fact that he bought them with money meant nothing.
They brainwashed him just like every other brain dead MUT player luckely i escaped it after madden 15.
Also doesnt help that all the ppl that spend all the money are idiotic 9 year olds who geniunely suck but cant be stopped because their team its OP also the same ppl are who goes for it on 4th and 30 like a person i just played

The mode itself didn't ruin Madden. The fact EA eventually chose over time to focus almost exclusively on it DID.

You have no idea how hard I had to grind to get my 85 OVR team without money and yet I still lose 60% of my games
the matchmaking is horrendous I have a 90 ovr team and every game I get dudes who's top threes are all nfl 100s or Tillman chemed up with ray lewis and some other demon.
Frozenwhirlpool tell me about it. You can grind days for the new cards while others will have it in about 20 minutes by spending money on packs

This is the most lit 🔥 video and I've been saying the same thing for years. Someone at EA said something like "fixing franchise isn't that easy, neither is making video games."
My response was, and is true, "I worked for and still work in the software industry. You COULD FIX FRANCHISE, but you won't because all projects in a development cycle get assigned resources (# of Devs), priority level, and number of hours to work on it. Thus why we have no franchise mode. Madden only cares about MUT Revenue and it shows.
They bought their exclusive rights deal with the NFL eliminating competition and thus we are stuck with this crap.
It's not just MUT that ruined Madden. It's also the fact they have the NFL licensing rights so there is no competition for them to have to match or be better than.
SDTV: the NFL can open their license and let any other company attempt to make a game, but that probably wont happen.

Sam_jupiters253 But the thing is that 2k has so much more depth and customization that I can play modes like my league for hours and not get bored. Even my career they made it a lot easier this year to get your players to 99 legit if you are someone who can put in the hours. Still, the gameplay can get a bit cheesy and everyone just abuses the same metas in 2k, but the game can still be fun. I can play 2k for days and not get bored, but I can barely last 30 minutes on madden if I’m not creating college rosters lmao. Madden is just so bland, lacks customization, and the gameplay is horrible and doesn’t simulate real football whatsoever. The player models look horrible, the shoulder pads don’t fit like in real life, there are no mouth pieces, no tattoos, everyone has the same sized hands and arm length and body type, knee pads are all the way on players knees, towels can still only be on the side, same generic faces every year, the face creations for face of the franchise are all ugly and look super unrealistic, we still can’t create team uniforms, and so many cleats that players wear in real life are not in the game 🤦🏾♂️.

I stopped sports gaming around 2012 because the quality kept getting worse. Found myself playing PS3 less and then stopped altogether. Got into trading cards as an outlet and ended up making money instead of spending it. Ended up being a lot of fun, unlike the experience playing Madden. Thanks for putting this together, I now know the why!!! #trustyourgut
