  • Glassing a fish surfboard with Silmar polyester resin. I used 4 oz E-Cloth (2 layers on the deck and 1 layer plus a tail patch on the bottom), red resin tint, black posca pen pin lines and a gloss finish. FCS 2 fin plugs with FCS 2 Modern Keel Twin Fins. 5' 3" x 2 1/2" x 19 7/8". I've only glassed a handful of boards and am not an expert but this is the process that works for me.

    I worked for glasser in hawaii for few months. Biggest time saving tip is to use hard back sander on first pass. Like 60 grit. Especially on laps of glass on rails. Fast and end up with smoother end product but have to be careful not to sand through. Lol. Great video. I could almost smell the resin. Mahalo.

I've stopped glassing in my bedroom due tio temperature. (my dog and I are forced to seep in the lounge when glassing) Next spring, I'm putting something like this shelter in my small garden . but I havent seen a large shelter like yours here in the UK?. could you give us the make and size and cost $$££of that plastic frame tarp shelter set up? thankyou . Love this video. one of the best on utube from start to finish, perfect and to the point.

      Thanks. It’s inside my garage. It’s a portable walk-in green house I purchased on amazon for $100. I live in Orange County, California so it doesn’t get too cold but I use a few heaters in the winter to keep it up to temperature. I think the the green house is 7x7x12. Tanner Bendheim thanks I will go online and look for it. being portable you can put it in your bedroom, passage, garden, courtyard, garage and shape all day long I'm in heaven WAAAAAAA! I live on the English channel in Devon. this particular area in the south of Devon doesn't have any waves except in winter so you have to drive 40 miles to the nearest good wave up the coast at Bigsbury beach.. I am lucky though, even though this is in the beautiful green country side we have a surf supplier for blanks 3o miles away in Kingsbridge called Triocean its a great friendly surfshop. In the north of Devon waves are pretty good and plentiful.. What does freak me out here in devon is the stupid liberals. like California its run by the libdems and so there are the same problems you are facing in California. I am a British Trump supporter cheers , surfs up!

      Hey Tanner, Do you use anything to clean the board after sanding the hot coat? My last board I sanded then used denatured alcohol to clean the board before the gloss coat and ended up with tons of uneven spots.
      Gary

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I usually wipe it down with a rag and then blow it off with a shop vac. I do also use denatured alcohol but very little. I just dab a little onto a rag and do a quick wipe down of the board. Be sure to sand in long drawn out passes to help keep the board even. I also get uneven spots some times, it’s hard to make it perfect. Good luck!

      Laminating resin with the fiberglass cloth and sanding resin for the hot coat to seal it. Use laminating resin for the fin and leash plugs as well. Laminating resin bonds to the board better and sanding resin allows you to sand once cured

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks man, that’s a great question. You can actually do the FCS 2 fins before glassing or after, I’ve seen it both ways. Most do it before and it’s what FCS advises as well. The leash plug and longboard center fin boxes go in after the hot coat. I don’t really have a good reason as to why other than that’s what I was always taught and is industry standard.

    Hey Tanner, love watching your videos. Do you have any tips for laminating the swallow tail? I can never lam the buttcrack area on the first go. Also the swallow tips tend to get pretty messy.

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      After my lamination I put an additional clear patch of fiberglass on the deck side of the swallow tail to cover the section of foam that my cut lap doesn’t get. If your doing a resin tint color just be sure to get the color on that section of foam even if the fiberglass doesn’t cover it. Then go in with the clear patch. Works great. For the tail tips just make sure you are checking your angle cuts on the fiberglass and how they will fold before adding the resin so you have clean overlaps. Good luck!

    Nice video man, I like your precision- like how you tape your fins symmetrically, and fold your masking paper over instead of tearing it. I have once question, how do you get your cloth inlays to "pop" with a darker color than the rest of the board? When I double layer (using a resin tint) it doesn't seem to show

      Thank you sir! The extra layer of cloth should bring out a darker color for you when saturated. I’m not sure why it wouldn’t be. I used 4oz E cloth for both layers. I would search the archives of swaylocks.com to see if you find any articles of guys having that same issue. Good luck!

      I don't know how their doing it these days but back in the 60's when I was glassing we used a couple methods. 1) glass one side and trim it out. Tape off the inlay and paint the foam your contrasting color and then clear glass that side 2) tape off the insert and use tinted resin and glass the insert only with the first layer and clear glass the second layer that wraps over the rails.

    Good morning, complements for your videos, very nice and useful !!!
    I'm restoring an old kite surfboard, made of resin.
    At the moment I have carried out numerous repairs with epoxy, fiberglass and mocrosfers, as a result the surface is aesthetically very unpleasant.
    The original resin was transparent and graphics were integrated between layers.
    I made the same graphics with the PC, so I can print them by ink jet plotters.
    At the moment I purchased epoxy and fiberglass to re-laminate the whole board over the existing layers. I don't care about the weight, I wish it will be very strong.
    I also bought a colorant for resins, white.
    If you can, I need some advice to finish the work, to give the surf an aesthetic aspect similar to the original:
    To give a white background, so as to cancel all the remaining signs of repairs, which is better than the following procedures?
    Procedure 1)
    - First lamiantion using only one layer of fiberglass and white colored resin
    - Second lamination with the next layers of fiber glass and trasparent resin and interposing between the layers the printed graphics
    Procedure 2)
    - I spread the white resin with brush all over the surface to erase the signs of repairs
    - Lamination with all the fiberglass layers, interposing the printed graphics
    Also, do you think for the realization of graphics it is possible to use glossy lucid paper (the kind used for techinchal drawings and china) or if you must use rice paper?
    Thank you
    Andrew

      TheAndreasdoni Hi Andrew. I haven’t done a full restoration project like yours and I’ve only worked with polyester resins and not epoxy so take my advice with a grain of salt. I would use a white pigment (not tint) color in your laminating resin saturated with your layers of fiberglass cloth. It will be hard to cover old colors and you may want to do a white foam stain on the blank as well before the lamination. Just make sure you use water based paints with resins. As far as the logo, I always use rice paper so I’m not sure about lucid paper. After you’ve finished laminating the board, put the logo on top of the white lamination and cover with a small patch of fiberglass and clear laminating resin. Sand smooth but don’t burn through the cloth. Then hot coat. If you want other opinions, try posting your question on swaylocks.com or join the Facebook group Backyard Surfboard Shapers and post your question there. Good luck!

    Hey Tanner, great video once again! I'm planning on shaping my first surfboard really soon and was wondering if you would have any reading material advice that really helped you out at first. I'll start with a kitesurfing surfboard in order to start practicing (As they can be smaller and if not perfect can still be usable) and then will move on to bigger surfboards. Tons of advice on TH-cam but I really like your style and am very curious to know how you started learning the craft. Cheers and thanks again for the video and lack of horrible music. Made it very easy to watch.

      Cool man! Yeah I am self taught and did a lot of reading myself and watched a lot of videos and instructional dvds. I suggest using the instructions on Greenlight’s website. They walk you through every step of the way and are very detailed. It’s free, you just need to create an account. Their link is in this video description. Best of luck man!

      @@BendheimBoards Thanks for the reply, I have been browsing their website quite a bit as there is lots of useful information. Planning on printing the most important stuff so I don't mess them up. Also they have pretty good kits. Being in Canada though it makes it a bit more complicated to get their products but definitely gives me a good place to start.
      I love that fish you made though. And that color is.... :D

    Hello mate,
    can you talk about the grit progression with this?
    In hotcoat and gloss coat!
    lovely job , nice work!

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! Here is the grit progression: After the hot coat start with 120, then 150, 220, 320 and 400. Wet sanding with 320 and 400 is also a good idea. This will give your board a matte-finish. After the gloss coat, start with 320 grit then move to 400, 600, 800, 1000, and 1,200. You should wet sand all of these grits. Then finish with compounding liquid and then polishing liquid. Good luck!

    Hey man, I really appreciate the content you are putting up.
    I have a similar shaping set up in my garage. So far I have only been shaping epoxy, however I’m interested to try poly resin.
    What was your experience glassing polyester resin inside your garage. Were you using any type of ventilation?
    Cheers!
